Hey everyone.

I know these posts tend to be annoying so I appreciate your patience.

Like I said, looking for some recommendations. I've been browsing the whole rec board but, being new to metal, I don't totally grasp the subtle distinctions between the multifarious genres of metal. This makes it kind of difficult to navigate those recommendations.

I'll try and describe what I like and why. Here's a list:

High on Fire
Black Tusk
Danzig
Nuerosis
Mastodon
Sleep
Earth
Isis
Boris
Melvins
Sabbath
Converge

I really love the grittiness of the first two. I come from a hardcore background so I gravitate to those types of vocals and guitar riffing. I always get recommended Baroness for this reason but I just can't get into them. I think the drumming is pretty weak: the drummer always has this disco-ish four-on-the-floor feel that's simply not bad ass. On the other hand, I think Mastodon are incredible. The drummer specifically. Also, Remission charts that hardcore-ish territory I was describing. But I also love their later stuff that is more proggy, groovy, and psychedelic (Blood Mountain is my favorite album of theirs). Isis and Sleep also appeal to me for their groovy-ness. A few friends of mine are really into Opeth. I dislike the abundance of acoustic passages, all the seriousness, and the guy's clean voice. I like progressive stuff up until a certain point: Opeth seems to be, in my opinion, overly concerned with general trickiness. Mastodon's Crack the Skye also has it's moments of eye-rolling trickiness for me (The Last Baron).

I hope some of this is clear. I guess I'm looking for sludgy, gritty, groovy stuff.

Thanks guys.

A request for stoner-y stuff coming from a hardcore fan? I think Crom's latest album fits this perfectly. Heavy tone, hardcore vocals, true grit. Yo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUxJMw0_YaA

If you like Melvins, check out their current band mates and comrades in "what the fuck?!"-ery, Big Business. Very similar to later era Melvins in particular.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEoIoiHczwU

Zoroaster are some pretty rad sludge that might have appeal to you as well. Lots of mammoth, droning riffs and shouted vocals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3N4fFMKD10

YOB are another interesting band. I've always thought of them as the band to bridge the gap between stoner / doom (Sleep) and post-sludge (Neurosis). Not that there was a huge gap between those anyways, but I'll let the music speak for itself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GiEPwfWY0A

From Sleep you also get a ton of worship / influenced bands like Black Pyramid, Toner Low, Acrimony, etc. There's other stoner / doom favorites like Electric Wizard and Warhorse, who do things a bit differently, but might also have some appeal.

You probably already know Amebix, but I'll post a video just in case
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqNTG3axdw4

Their latest EP, Sonic Mass, takes a different approach (more mature and psychedelic to some)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQIPeLwlzKA

Check Superjoint Ritual (featuring the former vocalist of a little band called Pantera)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD0gaajLnTs

Black Tusk's "Swamp Metal" may catch you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNe8uYjZIHY

Kvelertak are groovy and mix Punk with Black Metal. Also, according to the video, they may make you wanna punch and/or kick someone in the face
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDyHhV9UK-4

Hope you like them!

Glad to hear it! This one slipped my mind a bit, but you should also check out Harvey Milk. They're not metal enough to be on MA but I think to a Melvins / Big Business fan, they'd do the trick. They're also somewhat related, due to the fact that they had Joe Preson (of High on Fire, Earth and Melvins fame) on bass for a while. In any case, some of their heavier material is great, but I like all of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_w3Lb79UKI

Church of Misery should suit you. Excellent stoner doom with lyrics about serial killers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Oe073ySPhI

Dozer is another excellent stoner band. Their first album has that softer desert rock approach in the vein of Kyuss, while they got heavier over time. They have clean vocals though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EAxm50p5JA

Suma is sadly not very well known but they are very good and quite heavy and sludgy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL7xvrhpZ38

Black Cobra is some good grooving stoner doom. Since you like High on Fire these guys should suit you.

Seconding a bunch of stuff but seriously Suma, Big Business and Cult of Luna should be right up your alley, and are really excellent bands.

Dozer is freaking amazing but I don't think all(if any) of the albums have what you are looking for specifically(groovey yes, sludgy and hardcore influences not so much, nowhere near as gritty as High on Fire).
Sleep are legendary but very stoner oriented.

Check out Baroness, less gritty but seriously High on Fire makes it difficult to get grittier. This album fucking slays, love the monstrous vocals:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P9lBsib0qc

Fucking UFOmammut, eat space-dirt:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcCcOUdQ ... re=related

Weedeater, really there is a whole lot more sludge going on hear than your average stoner fare.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne2ZNn08uqA

Dala Sun, I don't know where to place them, but they are definitely in the awesome zone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExPjAqgUD3I

Do you know Killing Joke, and don't even think they are on the archives but this shit is heavy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QK7bUeF0y8

Minsk - very lengthy, epic stuff, the second probably more accurately describes there sound
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwxexj9bY6E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBiK4TJAoKQ

That should get you well into a few weeks worth of stuff.

Are you familiar with the New Orleans sludge scene? It seems like the perfect marriage of hardcore/punk and doom metal. It's likely that you have already heard at least one of them, but I'll try to briefly describe a few of the notable bands.

Crowbar: Quite varied throughout their eight albums as the lineup has been ever-changing around the mainman. Earlier stuff is a bit punkier, it shows that their roots are a mix of the second side of Black Flag's "My War", Black Sabbath, and Saint Vitus. Mid-era stuff (with Sammy Duet) is heavier and doomier - listen to "Planets Collide" for an idea of that. The last two have been a mix of those that's a bit more cleaned up and polished. All of their music sounds like Kirk Windstein looks.

Eyehategod: Since you mentioned Converge, it's worth comparing that EHG sound even more hostile. Their music is a blend of sludgy, dopesick doom jams and furious hardcore punk with a unique vocalist screaming over it. Start with "Take As Needed For Pain" and "Dopesick".

Acid Bath: Regardless of what style you like, it's essential to listen through both of their albums. The band shows different sides throughout and they're fantastic with all of them.

Soilent Green: NOLA sludge with some death metal and grindcore. Listen to "Sewn Mouth Secrets".

Down: NOLA supergroup fronted by Phil Anselmo, of course you know them. Look at the band's MA profile and check out the other bands those dudes have been in.
