Can anyone point me in the direction of some really harsh-sounding, super rhythmic IDM? The best reference point I could give is some of the songs off Aphex's Twin Girl/Boy Song EP (famously included on the non-european version of the RDJ Album), but nosier and with more even layered percussion, while still retaining a discernible rhythms. I almost want something like Merzbow-esque noise, but with done with glitch/idm percussive techniques and more coherent rhythms. Anything like that out there?

As you're familiar with Aphex Twin, I assume you're also familiar with Autechre? Some of the mid-period stuff like the Anvil Vapre EP may be of interest:

Some of Magnétophone's earlier material:

I guess I'll try my luck here, then:
Lads, I'm looking for warm, funky, bassy electronic music, akin to Breakbot, Fred Falke and Discovery-era Daft Punk.
Any help at all in my quest would be well rewarded. With my undying praise.

I'm not really sure what's what in terms of electronic music but I'm looking for songs similar to Rob and Chloe Alper http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwcZ0_5LVNQ and Masheaux https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7OcOq2w4_Y (apart from the chorus). I'm familiar with Fischerspooner, Lady Hawke, La Roux, Vive La Fête, Little Boots and Client. I want songs reasonably downbeat and not as fluffy synthpop sounding.

Would somebody be able to show me some more music similar to the style of Emperor's I Am (not I Am the Black Wizards), as well as Bethlehem's Tal and Marzahn? I really don't know where to look for it.

Looking for something like this. Heavily reverbed, somewhat lo-fi, very atmospheric, effect laden and emotional.

you could try Erik K. Skodvin:

or Svarte Greiner, which is way more atmospherical:

Both of those, while not really being that similar, fit what I asked haha. So I'm not disappointed as they were both very good.

So I've been listening to sigh and love all the layering of psychedelic elements (the rock organ, various electronic instruments, and whatever the hell that low toned electronic sound is at 2:18 and 2:52 https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/imag ... jqDt0abGeA is) but have listened to some psychedelic rock and a lot of it has some of that but doesn't really go all out with it and keeps the skin of rock music. Anyone know any psychedelic rock/experimental/electronic bands that just focus on layering tons of dense, trippy sounds on top of each other? Thanks, cause I know next to nothing about this genre.

Hello all,

I'd be very interested to find something as amazing and epic and fuzzy/noisy as Menace Ruine. Something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBhGQIRmK6s

Those vocals are just amazing.
Chelsea Wolfe is also somewhat similar, particularly the track "Moses"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ww2UzDDlpnI

So like... noisy, fuzzy, epic, great vocals.
Anything like this?

Edit: I've looked through every band in the thread.

Ok, so this is going to be a very specific request.

I'm mostly looking for trip hop with a dark vibe, although some forms of trippy/atmospheric breakbeat or downtempo may also be of interest, given that they exude the kind of vibe I'm looking for. I'm a sucker for Portishead's first couple of albums, while Third just sound weird in a bad way, and I love that experimental edge and film noir aesthetic. I'm also very much into everything Massive Attack, apart from Heligoland, although I have my deepest love concentrated in Mezzanine and 100th Window. Rob Dougan's one and only album is also something I find rather interesting, given its mixture of several styles.

So basically I'd like to find more (trip hop/breakbeat/downtempo) that goes somewhere around the aforementioned bands/albums' sound. I was listening to Morcheeba's debut album earlier, and it wasn't a case where the material isn't good, but rather one where it's too cheery and happy sounding. I'd like something darker, more machinal, if you catch my drift.

Feel free to recommend known names as well as obscure acts, since I'm not very versed into the world of electronic music. I'd prefer if it wouldn't go as far as into early Lamb territory, with its excessive house (acid?!) leanings. Not too keen on them because of that.

Well, I can certainly see (or rather hear) the appeal of this album. It steps way too much outside of my comfort zone when it comes to electronic music though. Something similar but a bit less "extreme", or with a more straightforward sense of direction and vocal lines, instead of all the chopped up looping, would probably be interesting to hear. As this stands it's something I can hear once without feeling the need to turn it off, but at the same time it doesn't leave a lasting impression on me that makes me want to listen to it again.

Burial's colab with Massive Attack is amazing, and i think the s/t is better than Untrue. Be sure to check it all out.

Could anyone recommend me power electronics acts like Converter?
I am looking for that sterile, mechanical, harsh yet intense and somewhat angry sound.

Gave both Burial albums another go and it's really not my thing. Too stale and repetitive, although some of the ambience is pretty good. It's just not what I'm looking for. The MA/Burial split sounded very interesting, but it's a two track vinyl only edition that costs a few hundred euros... GAAAHHH!!! :annoyed:

Anyway, if I could refine my request based on the things recommended so far I'd say that I want something slightly more dynamic, both in terms of the main beat and the vocal lines. Dark and moody yes; bleak, grey and shadowy in terms of mood and ambience, yes; but ultimately something more with a steady beat and some sort of progression instead of just hypnotic repetition.

Please feel free to name anything that fits. ;)

Just getting around to these. I see the similarities, but I'm not really a fan. Both too acoustic and not dark enough. Thanks though, those are probably the most logical choices.

how about....

Chelsea Wolfe's "Advices and Vices" mixed with Forgotten Woods's "With Swans I'll Share my Thirst" I'd love something like the two of those.

The Haxan Cloak

I actually... enjoyed this?! :) This is probably what would happen if Lustmord was to make a Silent Hill game soundtrack. Creepy stuff. Anything out there like this that doesn't dabble too much in pure ambient? I want something rhythmically dynamic. Also if there's anything similar to this, but only faster and less "droney".

Please let me know, I'm very receptive to further recommendations. ;)

I'll give it a shot.

Lost Balance - Alone in Multitudes

Spanish trip-hop with more dynamic beats. Atmospherically dark and has both male and female vocals. Bleak ambiance. Maybe a little repetitive, in terms of the beats, but there's a bit of variety in there and I guess you could say the beat is "steady".

I assume you're familiar with Tricky's Maxinquaye? If not, I would imagine it would be right up your alley.

The Atomica Project - Metropolitan

American trip-hop with steady beats, depressive lyrics, moody atmosphere. This is their best album.

Coco and the Bean - Tales From the Mouse House

Trip-hop seemingly heavily influenced by Massive Attack and Tricky. The vocalist reminds me of Tricky in some ways. He has that half-rapping style and deep voice. The song is moody, has a bleak atmosphere, male and female vocals and steady beats.

Bows - Blush

This ones a bit different to the rest. Trip-hop fused with atmospheric drum and bass, although this aspect of the music is toned down. Dark and moody, like most trip-hop. Interesting beats and vocals. This song is a better representation of that drum and bass aspect. Although, since you seem to like Lamb, you shouldn't mind this. Also see: Halou and Everything But the Girl.

Others you should check out:
Bowery Electric - Beat
The Controls - One Hundred
Perry Blake - Perry Blake
Aim - Cold Water Music
Unkle - Psyence Fiction

Then there's Antimatter, Emancipator, Esthero, Hooverphonic, DJ Krush, Elsiane, Saltillo, Sunday Munich, Sneaker Pimps,

Holy crap captain awesome! :o

That... will take some time to filter through and give feedback. I was left with pretty much only The Haxan Cloak from the time of my request (haven't thanked bucephalus for that one), so it's cool to have more stuff to check. Tricky is one of the Bristol guys I'm not yet familiar with, and to be honest the only names I know from what you listed are Antimatter (assuming it's the band with Duncan Patterson) and Sneaker Pimps, which I can't really remember how they sound because I saw them live back in 1999! Gotta say my memory isn't helping with that one, eh. :D

Thanks mate, I'll try and give some feedback during the next days/weeks.

Ha, no worries. Take your time.

I'm surprised you've not heard Tricky yet. Maxinquaye, in particular, is essential listening. You ought to like it if you like Massive Attack. I recommend giving Sneaker Pimps a go again. Very cool that you saw them live. I was only 12 in 99'. :P

I have The Haxan Cloak to listen to at some point myself. I read a lovely review of it recently, "This album makes me want to turn it up really loud, turn off all my lights, and lay on my floor naked in a puddle of my own piss. Nice."

If you're interested in ambient, dub and techno, I've got some more recommendations for you. ;) Generally dark music with beats.

Like these:
Deepchord Presents Echospace and a personal favorite of mine, Gas.

Oh, and Deadbeat.

To be honest I have no idea why I haven't heard (old) Tricky yet. I remember some ten or so years ago when everyone went apeshit about his return with Blowback, from which I only mildly remember the advance single. But yeah, for someone so deep into the Bristol scene I still have a few artists in need of checking. ;)

I'm not that much into electronic music, but in recent years I've developed an appreciation for dark music that doesn't rely on distorted guitars, or to word it better, that doesn't use conventional instruments. Trip hop was one of the cases where I could find interesting bands, and slowly I'm expanding my awareness of other styles.

About The Haxan Cloak, do listen to them. It's like a soundtrack to Silent Hill, and I'm actually surprised how good it came out considering that it's very far from what I usually listen to.

Saltillo - monocyte

I'm really keen on blackfilm and Saltillo's debut is also enjoyable but less dark.

OK, small update on the latest stuff I've been recommended. :)

Hymnofwolves, you're pretty spot on with yours. I have to say that both Blackfilm and Saltillo impressed me, although the first was clearly better. That first track alone is pure gold. I'm definitely going to check out both albums in full.

Now Perplexed_Sjel, I wasn't yet able to catch up with everything but I did spend some time browsing through some of the stuff you listed. The last ones you recommended; Deepchord Presents Echospace, Gas and Deadbeat are not at all what I'm looking for. It's just not my kind of music. Deadbeat also reminds me mildly of Burial. Lost Balance sounds a bit influenced by dream pop doesn't it? I'm not much into that as well, although I can see why you put it up. The Atomica Project sounds interesting, and that song "Bittersweet" sounds almost like something Portishead could have done. Coco And The Bean sounds a lot like Tricky, and Tricky sounds cool! I'm still having a bit of trouble letting go the rehashed ideas he uses on Maxinquaye though, especially that "rap beat". You know what I'm talking about. The last stuff I checked was Blows, and by extension Halou and EBTG. I think you misread my post above, as they do sound a bit like what Lamb was doing on Fear Of Fours in terms of the drum and bass influence, but that's exactly why I can't get into Lamb as well. Funny thing though, I saw them in the same Summer festival as Sneaker Pimps back in 1999. :p

Still need to check the rest below, maybe tomorrow.

Then there's Antimatter, Emancipator, Esthero, Hooverphonic, DJ Krush, Elsiane, Saltillo, Sunday Munich, Sneaker Pimps,

The two suggestions you've liked most so far are less trip-hop and more other things. :P

I didn't suggest Deepchord Presents Echospace, Gas or Deadbeat as part of your recommendation. I just mentioned dark music with beats associated to dub and techno that I like. :P

Lost Balance dream pop influenced? I don't think so, no. Sounds like Bristol based trip-hop worship to me. Dream pop is something entirely different!

If you enjoy Blackfilm, how about Subheim? Getting any closer? People say they're somewhat similar.
