Can anyone recommend guitar-based drone/experimental/ambient music similar to Barn Owl and Locrian?

Hey, thanks for introducing me to Barn Owl, I'll be obtaining their music as soon as I finish work!

As for recs, it may not be quite what you're looking for, but maybe some Fripp & Eno:

Or this collaboration between Mike Oldfield and David Bedford:

More in Locrian's direction

Ben Frost - Theory of Machines is probably more what you're looking for, but By the Throat is his best work. Very powerful.

this one's a bit more out there, but purely amazing

wassup niggas?
I have a problem. I LOVE Amesoeurs and LOVEEE Audrey's voice... but they only have one album and the only other band Audrey is in (at least to my knowledge) is Pest Noire. And I really dislike them. I need more post-punk(ish) and stuff kinda like Amesoeurs with a vocalist like Audrey - relaxed, gentle, natural yet good (as in non-operatic stuff, like, I love Epica and Nightwish and stuff but I'm not looking for those kind of vocals. or music for that matter.)

if you can't think of anything really close to what I'm asking for you can go with the closest you can think of, as long as it shares some similarities with Amesoeurs/Audrey's vocals.

How so? Dream pop? Maybe. The rest? I don't see it. That isn't to say I have any issues with any of those genres being discussed here though.

When I feel like listening to something to just chillout I turn to these 4 genres. This is why they are similar to me. Shoegaze, dream pop and trip-hop all have similar vocal style. Even though post-rock is instrumental a lot of post-rock bands have electronic influence and use synth/keyboard on a regular basis. But most importantly all 4 genres create a similar dream like atmosphere for me. Hence I said they have similarity. If it doesnt work for you like that its ok. I just said I dont have problems with electronica and trip-hop being included in this thread. I really dont find it inappropriate.

Well first off, make sure to check out Amesoeurs first release as that third track is amazing.

then there's

Siamese Twins, kinda straight up lo-fi post-punk with similar female vocals

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxqfPqkTdD4

Whirr's (formally Whirl) a bit more shoegaze, but worth checking out

Is there an entire album out there that sounds like the style of the song "You Made Me Realise" by My Bloody Valentine? I'm not actually crazy about Loveless but I LOVE "You Made Me Realise".

Does someone feel like selling me on noise and ambient music in general? Also, if anyone has any good field recording rec that would be cool too. Just give me a couple of your favorite noise and ambient artists to get me going

Isn't Anything and the EP collection (specifically the YMMR e.p. and the "Feed Me With Your Kiss" e.p. are what you want to look for.

It'd be much easier to recommend specific albums over artists. With this stuff...which does get into a pretty expansive field if your post is asking what I think it's asking, artists tended to change up their sound a lot through the course of their discographies. For example, you might like one Nurse With Wound LP and hate every single other LP he's done.

It'd also be helpful to have more specifics on what your looking for. Do you want all out blasting distortion coming through your speakers? Playful/humorous wierdo stuff? Unaltered field recordings? Metal junk bashing? 20th century classical? Old school industrial? 80s post-industrial/cassette culture stuff? Whitehouse type power electronics? 2000s hipster "noise"? Ambient pioneers from the 70s?

For "pure" noise, Merzbow's "Pulse Demon" is the most well-known:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlGh_okr5nI

Ambient is a very nebulous term, ranging from soft keyboard music to abstract atmospheric sounds. Aphex Twin is a good place to start, his material touches most bases. "Selected Ambient Works vol. II" is his most consistently "ambient" album.

I would like stuff less on the distortion and ear-rape side, and more on the muffled, softer side

stuff like Burzum's ambient albums, Mortiis, Za Frûmi, etc: basically a sort of orchestral/film score music but made with 90s keyboard/effect

I'd say it's something like a keyboard version of a Diablo game soundtrack, creepy ball & chains synths creating a dark atmosphere.

One assumes you are already familiar with Mortiis?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0hmrkrZjm0

Wongraven is a bit more expansive than most regular "dungeon synth" acts, as they utilise occasional acoustic instruments and vocals, but Dungeon Synth is what you're after. This blog is the virtual bible on the genre:

An interesting recommendation for anyone who delights in the obscure: whilst trawling BandCamp the other day, I discovered an act called Ophir. They are a post-BM band who specialise in long droning instrumental tracks based around layers of higher-registered guitar lines drenched in reverb. Cavernous buried sounds which could be vocals and/or percussion occasionally surface from the drones. To be honest, I'm still getting my head around the music. I recommend starting with the latest release "Spikenard" ; the 1st release "Nutmeg" is a lot more atonal and challenging to listen to.

http://ophir666.bandcamp.com/

I can see a lot of you hating it, but it may appeal to some of you, especially the guy who requested something along the lines of Barn Owl and Locrian recently.

Looking for stuff like the Burial vs Massive Attack EP that came out last year.

Soothing, ethereal, beautiful electronic music that's otherworldly.

I've checked out Massive Attack which I don't care for and I have Burial's s/t which is okay (not a fan of the male vocals). But if there's something specific of his i should look into please say it.

for those of you that missed it,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VisKkedFZjw

Maybe the best release of 2011

I'm looking for depressive noise/drone. With music notes, but no more than one or two notes playing at a time; a simple melody at most, with some sludge cords perhaps. Not like bongripper. That fits the sludgy one cord at a time, but it's not noise.

Something that has disturbing atmospheric qualities. The darker and more mysterious the better. I found it really helped me with feelings of anxiousness today to listen to music (or something close to music) with these qualities.

This doesn't have disturbing loud noises and it becomes more music than noise. Too much song structure. Also I am not looking for ambient which this has i'm looking for drone perhaps a dark ambient would work. That wasn't dark enough.

This certainly is closer to what i'm looking for. What I listened to today that I found such a strong connection to was actually not a metal band, called detritivore. Today, I found myself feeling more anxious today then I can remember. I turned this on and it was so perfect that I got lost in the music. It's just a shame this album is only 30 minutes and not an hour.

That stuff is weird man, mostly dark ambient with some droning guitars and a gush of noise. Not my territory so I can't recommend anything similar to that.

mediocre black metal band from Italy with this amazing ambient track, the Detritivore you psoted reminds me of it. Shame they didn't make more music like this track, it's definitely one of my favorites.

This is dubstep, but if you search "dubstep" you may find tons of "brostep", because many people use this term for all the stuff with heavy basslines
so I suggest you to try with "future garage" or "UK garage"

Great, I had seen Dubstep tossed around for this stuff, but I was all too familiar with the wobble of brostep. thanks a bunch.

As for harsh noise you could try Wolf Eyes, they're on subpop!

After the occasional listen and not getting it, I have started to really enjoy Portishead. Listening to a fair bit of it. I like Mezzanine by Massive Attack, and Endtroducing by DJ Shadow, but don't know anything else from the genre, other than tricky, which I don't like as hip-hop vocals don't appeal to me. Anyone recommend me anymore trip-hop without hip-hop vocals please?

Re: trip hop, unfortunately the hip hop/rap influence was there if you're talking about Tricky (1st 2 or 3 albums) and Massive Attack's (1st, 2nd to a lesser degree)...there is rapping on Mezzanine too, not sure how you missed it.

Anyway, try these, not exactly trip hop but somehow related and no hip hop/rap vocals:

Scala: Beauty Nowhere

Locust (UK): Morning Light (Truth is Born of Arguments is very good also but entirely instrumental)

Scorn: Evanescence

Urban Tribe: the collapse of modern culture

I'm kind of dipping my toes into harsh noise. Anybody have anything specific to suggest?
