Hi all, lately I've heard mention of things like noise, 'harsh noise wall', 'noisecore', etc. I'm intrigued about what this is, exactly, and was wondering if anybody could give examples of its different forms and defining bands? Really just looking to explore and discover a subgenre that at the moment I know very little of, so any help would be appreciated.

Gnaw Their Tongues is a blackened noise project that's been getting the most attention as far as "noise metal" goes, I'd say. The following list of artists are ones that are either noise-metal or incorporate influence from noise.

Aluk Todolo
Seirom
NDE
The Axis of Perdition
Aderlating
De Magia Veterum
Menace Ruine
Nekrasov
Lonesummer
Locrian
Khanate
Gnaw
Wrath of the Weak
Nahvalr
Vegas Martyrs
Servile Sect
Pyha
Zarach Baal Tharagh
Trist
Horseback
Necrite
Distorted Cognitions
Sunn O)))
Earth
Aska
Dead Raven Choir
Prurient

But noisecore specifically:

Nihilist Commando
Last Days of Humanity
The Locust
Melt Banana
Gerogerigegege

Those are the only bands I really know. Noisecore is a more chaotic, dissonant version of mathcore, grindcore, and the like.

I would like to add Abruptum and Choronzon to the List.

THe first is rather pure noise, while the latter is a dissonant mixture of black and industrial.

That's Assdestroyer with the Teen Ass Revolt album. But yeah. Best noisecore ever, quite possibly. Also, I'd recommend Anal Cunt's early material. The releases with names like X Song EP specifically.

Black Mass of Absu were a fairly bizarre sounding black/doom/noise band that have a pretty eerie atmosphere on their recordings. Check out their last EP to start with them.

I have a few Merzbow albums but haven't heard those. What are they like? What years were they released?

The little i've heard from Sickness is great. I have the Break Your Face 4 way split CD.

I rate KK Null also.

Check out Skullflower - Fucked on a Pile of Corpses

It's a very cohesive album, some tracks have haunting leads that provide something resembling melodic touches to the affair, while there are a couple straight up harsh noise peaces as well. I definitely prefer it to their earlier album.

I second Merzbow, especially "venereology". Other very good recommendations in the same vein would be Masonna - BeautyBeast and C.C.C.C. - Loud Sound Dopa.

Grunt! Some of the best Power Electronics I've heard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFD7byEq5o8

EDIT:

Just read the OP a little more deeply. If you're looking to get acquainted with the various areas of noise, Power Electronics probably isn't a bad start. It has a fairly defined sound, and it's also the noise genre that seems to be easiest to approach for most people with a metal background (from what I've seen anyway). The aforementioned Grunt is, as said, some of the I've heard. Some others I'd recommend checking out are Sutcliffe Jugend and STROM.ec.

I'd include Whitehouse as well, since they're pretty much the leading example of the genre

If you're digging black noise, Havohej's Kembatinan Premaster is essential listening.

What? Spazz is noisecore? Shining is not noisy in the slightest.

He asked for noise, eh. Also, don't resurrect thread to post lists like that.
