I'm a college jazz student and I'm writing a black metal/crust solo EP thingy and im looking for some inspiration to help me on my way to putting thick, meaty chords in BM without it sounding too pretty. The closest thing I can think of to doing this is Weakling, with the whole "orchestrated" sound with all the different melodies coming in and out of everything, yet still heavily saturated chordally. This is especially true in parts of this song:

Other example would be a much darker wolves in the throne room:

or much more melodic Old wainds.

any suggestions?

Aha, what you are after is hipster black metal. Anything from the following link will suffice.

troll harder, and no, not necessarily. I mentioned one hipster band. Most hippie black metal stuff is melodically pretty in the box anyways, like Skagos and their constant diatonic triads... SQUARE. So maybe some hippie bm that actually sounds dark? Give me a real rec.

for musicians, metal that uses sevenths and evil chord progressions, diatonic or not, hipster or not. I happen to dig lots of the hipster stuff so suk it, haters gonna hate

another example maybe? ash borer.

I never thought I would see a black metal fan say, "haters gonna hate" when talking about black metal. Anyways, does Nargaroth happen to fit into what you're looking for?

Ok guys, theres no reason at all to be rude to the OP. Somebody recently brought up how rude we are if somebody brings up a style thats the slightest bit different than "ours". I think we ought to be courtious to the guy and at least offer him some music he would like.

Can't really think of any though, theres so much out there. Just check out the black metal help thread and check some of that stuff out.

By the way, anybody know who's art that is on the third link?

I'm going to have to go with Andacht by Lunar Aurora.

I'm not much of a musician from a technical standpoint though, so that could be completely off :P

It also sounds like he says "The raven licks my asshole" as the first vocal line there. It never fails to crack me up.
