Also, anyone care to talk about Deathrock?

I do realize Deathrock, 80's Goth, and Post-Punk may not be everyone's bag here, but it's one of my favorite styles of music, right up there with Grindcore, Punk, and all varieties of 80's Extreme Metal, and I do feel Deathrock is relevant to Punk discussions.

I tend to consider Rudimentary Peni Deathrock FAR more than I do Anarcho-Punk. Even Nick Blinko claims the band associated more with the Goth subculture than with Anarchist politics. People who haven't picked up on this confuse me, because I can't listen to songs like Tower of Strength or Play (or nearly all other songs in their repertoire) and NOT hear a Deathrock band!:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzNerTodmOI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gm_LLyzUHzE

I'd say the same thing about Samhain, who had a distinctly "Gothic" flavor as opposed to The Misfit's more Hardcore "Horror Punk" sound:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnJzYJG_IyY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_D6xmE8YPc

(Yes, I know both of these songs were written when Danzig was still technically in The Misfits).

Just wanted to get this out of the way so there'd be no questions when say I really enjoy these Deathrock bands:

Rudimentary Peni
Samhain
(Rozz Williams-era) Christian Death: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ki2Zmb_0fUc
45 Grave: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PX5YSO2mQs

Any other fans?

Any recommendations for good modern bands active today?

Not sure if this should go here or the grindcore thread, I'll post here first.

I'm looking for some modern fastcore/thrashcore. Basically powerviolence leaning hardcore that's still (sort of) considered hardcore.

Examples: Punch, early Ceremony, Trash Talk, Extortion, Coke Bust, Pollution (somewhat).

Anything along these lines would be greatly appreciated.

In response to your post on deathrock and the like I'm going to have to agree with you. All my friends are old style goths and I got a lot of good music recommendations from them over the years. I'd say try and check out Specimen and Alien Sex Fiend for starters on deathrock. Also try later period Damned for more of a a gothy approach to things. Favorite goth band has to be Bauhaus though, pretty much got everything they've done and are a true favorite of mine. Favorite deathrock band is .45 Grave though, Dinah Cancer is a fantastic singer.

Actually that was a good rec, but I already know Scholastic Deth. All the stylistically similar bands I know as well, because I've been through powerviolence (for the most part), the classic stuff and the modern stuff. I tried to avoid using the p-word so that I wouldn't be recommended stuff I already knew and stuff on the grind-ier side. I know there's alot of overlap and such also, I just figured there was a bunch of punkier stuff that I didn't know about since I'm basically completely clueless about punk, especially the modern underground stuff. Any other recs?

Thanks, they sound good!

And I wasn't a fan of it either. I started getting into Melodic Hardcore of the Embrace/Dag Nasty variety and one day I was listening to Witch Hunt and went like "Holy shit this is like a crust version of Ruiner!" :D

I've been listening to Jello Biafra and the Melvins this morning.

Anyone want to recommend me some chugging hardcore? I already know about Cro Mags and Subhumans and whatnot.

Good band! My favorite chugging riff in all of punk's greatness is the main first riff in another one of Jello's sideprojects.

Check out Jello Biafra and D.O.A : Full Metal Jackoff, great song! The riff is so good. Good old Joey Shithead.

Anyone who hasn't checked into Keith Morris' new band OFF! needs to do so, especially if you pop a chub listening to Nervous Breakdown.

Crust and Hardcore are separate scenes =p

And early Grindcore did come from the Crust scene in England too =)

But realistically yeah all that together would probably be a pretty crowded thread...

wolfpack/wolfbrigade, victims, hellshock all have plenty of melody. i know there are plenty of others but those are the ones that pop immediately into my head.

you'll forgive me if i'm in well-worn territory, but for your punkish/blackish aesthetic - summon the crows, kvelertak, martyrdod, endless disease & iskra

Heard Wolfpack, Victims and Hellshock. Thanks for the others, just the stuff I wanted.

Anyone got any good reccs for thrashcore? You know the drill, stuff like Infest, early S.O.B., Heresy, Infest, early DRI, Voorhees, Charles Bronson, R.A.M.B.O., MK-Ultra. Not looking for stuff that's overly powerviolence-esque, just straight up ultra-fast hardcore

Mother fucking Hellnation of course! Also the band that the bassist/drummer joined after Hellnation folded called Brody's Militia is the shit. Hellnation is a lot more just straight forward relentless fast fast fast type shit though.

Hellnation and Brody's Militia are both sexcellent.

Also check out:

Charm (especially if you like old SxOxBx)
Cryptic Slaughter
Wasted Youth
Totalitar
Nigel Pepper Cock
Scholastic Deth (I've probably already mentioned them in this same thread though)
Satanic Malfunctions
Jerry's Kids
Negative Approach
GISM
Fuck On The Beach

For ultra fast hardcore I will always recommend Bukkake Boys. This band rips beyond hard and remain relatively unknown. Saw em last night with magrudergrind, cough, and dead in the dirt here in atlanta... them and cough tied for best set of the night imo.

Heard all of them  Kinda obvious reccomendations, though some of them aren't really along the pure thrashcore lines I was asking for. Jerry's Kids, Negative Approach, Wasted Youth being kinda more 'proto' shit IMO. Though Fuck on the Beach can be added to the list of bands I mentioned in my original post.

I'll check out Bukkake Boys, Brody's Militia and Hellnation.

Voetsek's first album is also pure fastcore. 40 songs in 20 something minutes says it all. The female vocals grate on some people but I think they're pretty fitting.

Bukkake Boys and Hellnation are amazing! Can't believe I overlooked Hellnation for so long. Brody's Militia is a little too crusty, it's badass as fuck but not the pure fastcore shit. Bukkake Boys was 100% what I wanted though.

Figured this would be the most relevant place to ask even though it's been dead for awhile. I'm looking for some screamo that's similar to Saetia. Basically softer bits with somewhat "whiny" vocals mixed with fairly chaotic parts. The only other stuff I'm aware of like this is Four Hundred Years and Indian Summer.

Orchid, Antioch Arrow, and Sailboats should be a good place too start. Possibly Pg.99 as well and maybe Moss Icon.

Haven't heard much from any of those outside of Orchid, so thanks for the recommendations. I listened to a little bit of Sailboats so far and while it wasn't exactly what I'm looking for, it still sounded fucking fantastic.

But I like Skramblezzz :(

That said, I am not exactly crazy about some of the biggest names/figureheads of the genre, oddly enough.

I like Skramz that's a lot rawer, shittier, and weirder than most popular bands of the genre: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYkUgfLeja0 (yeah, I've posted that same video 20 times, but it's really the perfect example of what I mean).

That said, I do quite thoroughly dig Antioch Arrow and Moss Icon though...

Heroin were also good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8qecIlAWN4

I'm looking for a general introduction to crust - I know Amebix and a few from the Serbian scene, but not much. I also want to know how to differentiate between a lot of crust and general d-beat music, as it sounds quite similar to me.

Listen to Discharge for d-beat and Hellbastard for crust.

Okay, thanks, I've just listened to Hellbastard (that was great), and I'm a big fan of Discharge already, but I'm more unsure about the difference between d-beat and crust which happens to use the d-beat (my example would be Dishumanity). Is there a particular guitar tone?

Haha. I'm afraid I can't help you there. These two sub-genres often confuse me as well. :P I speculate it's more of a matter of riffs than guitar tone. From my limited experience with the genres, I say crust sounds more influenced by metal than d-beat.
