I think this band might be something you dig, checked them out on a whim a while back expecting it to be god awful but the first 4 songs are pretty cool, definitely dark, the last 2 are dog shit imo haha. that band planks reminded me of them at parts, harmonies n such.

Mixed up what you said and lsitened to the last two thinking "really? THIS is what he suggests?"

Thanks dog, not half bad. although nothing's really quenching my thrist

It's also worth mentioning here that Mohoram Atta's the shit. More d-beaty and HHIG sounding, they're simply amazing. Drummer now plays in Fell Voices and 14,000 other bands. you know the band's good when they cite Cursed, Envy, and "fucking Darkthrone."

I've listened to their split with Thou, damn good stuff, Forever Sleep is a killer song

thank you very much, yeah I'm still trying to flesh out my punk experience, I already have War Crime's from Doom and A New Dawn Fades from Wolfpack, although I haven't really gave them a fair listen, so thanks again.

Glad to be of help. Try to find the Peel Sessions LP/CD by Doom...by far their best work IMHO, though I love pretty much everything they've done. Avoid the "F*** Peaceville" comp., it's pretty boring re-recordings of the Peaceville stuff.

You'd probably dig "Extinction" by Nausea too if you don't already have it, and the Varuker's first LP...maybe GBH's City Baby Attacked by Rats?

I'm curious where you heard that from, because I've never heard anyone say that before. Unfortunately, that comp 2XLP was my first intro to the band in the late 90s and it nearly put me off them. It wasn't until I heard the originals later that Doom even clicked with me. The reason I don't like it is because it's a pointless step backwards given what the later lineup was capable of on "rush hour", "lost the fight", and even "w.o.s.". The re-recordings add nothing to the originals...they only lose the energy and subtleties (insofar as this kind of music has subtleties) of the originals and make everything sound incredibly samey-and monotonous, which is not what I want when I'm listening to crusty D-beat. Now, I don't think the original recordings were perfect or anything (a lot of tracks have triggered drums:( ) , so if you want to hear the first phase of Doom with a near perfect recording for their style, get the Peel Sessions LP. Just like Napalm Death, they really nailed it on the Peel Sessions.

For sure. My first introduction was the Police Bastard ep which is perfect. I moved on next to the Fuck Peaceville comp which really just sounds stagnate. A lot of early crust's power came from its stripped down, "live" quality and charm. "Rapped Ass" is good for this reason as well, as is E.N.T's Peel Sessions. Maybe Fuck Peaceville is good for one track here or there, but I think the source material's always been better with Doom, and the same could probably be said for the rest of those British crust bands. Also, no crust band should ever put out material longer than 30mins.

I love hardcore, mainly the essentials; Adolescents, Agnostic Front, Bad Brains, Bad Religion, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, D.O.A., Dead Kennedys, Discharge, MDC, Minor Threat, Misfits, Negative Approach, Reagan Youth, SS Decontrol, T.S.O.L., etc.

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Flipper, Subhumans, Oi Polloi (Scottish anarcho punk band), Aus-Rotten, and various crust bands. Flipper's Generic album is one of the best punk albums. I love the sludgy sound they incorporated. I'm not a huge fan of Black Flag's My War, by the way. Anyway, any recommendations for sludgy punk bands based on Flipper and the hardcore era?

I hate to just post songs randomly in these threads but I'm really liking a band called Early Graves. They're a gritty mix of hardcore, grind, and a couple occasional stoner riffs and some "beatdown" stuff also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_CtYwT08io

Fang and Drunks with Guns are two bands you'd probably dig.

For later stuff coming from the crust side, Dystopia were one of the best IMHO.

Cyanamid is the next best thing. The east coast's Flipper. Also one of the first proto-grind bands.

For something Flipper-esque, try Kilslug, Upsidedown Cross, Angry Hate, Rusted Shut, certain Sloth [Ohio] recordings, and maybe some early Butthole Surfers. Perhaps some of the more "out there" Japanese crasher punk like Shit Box, too.

You may also enjoy certain No Wave bands like Mars. or maybe not at all.

and Towpath.

For anyone looking for quality d-beat check out Disclose and D-Clone. Just some raw, energetic pissed off music.

And for people looking for some good fast punk hardcore check out Surf Nazis Must Die and Los Crudos.

Here is a band you might like, some good hardcore(if you are not homophobic). The band is Limp Wrist, vocalist from Los Crudos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyaKvANgHHg

If you like NA, there are other Midwest bands associated with the Touch and Go scene of the early 80s that you'd probably love.

Necros - Conquest for Death

The Fix - At the Speed...(discog collection)

Die Kreuzen - s/t (1st LP)

Other stuff (from other scenes) you'd probably dig:

Void - their side of the split with Faith
Jerry's Kid's - is this my world
Siege - drop dead
DRI - 22 song lp (also called s/t)
Poison Idea - anything from the early 80s

TONs of other stuff too, I got hooked on early 80s HC as a teenager and love the stuff...after getting through a lot of the big American bands you'll probably want move on to HC from Europe and other parts of the world...in the past few years I discovered a ton of bands I never knew existed as a teenager...

Need recommendations for for other stuff like Provoked:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-W4u2qkjWQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rMXYz_ofBs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxnipUO4U-E
(yep, half the songs on that album sound exactly the same... and I still enjoy them. h8rz step back! :annoyed: )

I'm specifically looking for stuff that blends Crust ethos/lyrics/aesthetics/ideas/blahblahblah and melodic Post-Hardcore/Hardcore Punk instrumentation with raspy, sort of Black Metal-influenced vocal stylings and occasional Metallic tremolo-picked or Motorhead-style riff sections.

Raytownian,

I may be a bit off here, but the 90s hardcore band Catharsis (that released stuff on Crimethinc) may be up your alley. Specifically, the "Samsara" and "Passion" LPs.

Another one you may dig is Filth of Mankind, from Poland. Their LP the Final Chapter is one of my favorite crust oriented records...

Catharsis and the equally mighty HHIG were the bands that introduced me to the sound of the new school of core/crust/grind in the late 90's and im eternally thankful

sup my niggas! I'm finally getting into Hardcore and PV and shit! Always loved it I bet, just didnt know haha. So. I have a few requests/questions :D

1. is there a punk archives?

2. I recently found out/re-found out that there's actually kind of a grind/pv/punk scene in and around my stupid little town called Novato, CA (about 35min out from Oakland and San Francisco) and I talk to a guy whos been in some of these bands sometimes cuz he works at Watts (music store) on sundays and mondays. however the only band from Novato that I really enjoy would be Scalped and Sabertooth Zombie, but I think they're from Rohnert Park. And half of the enjoyent is probably from how local they were/are/idfk. are there any actually good PV/Hardcore/etc bands from my area?

3. Are there any Hardcore/Grind/etc bands that are edge? I'm edge, so I was just wondering. I'm not asking for stuff like H2O or anything, but it cant hurt to mention anybody if they're quality. and don't be afraid of being too obvious with the recommendations, like I mentioned at first, I'm pretty new to this.

and also I'd like to show anyone who doesn't already know of them the band that really sparked my interest in these genres..
I found em in the clearance section of A389's webstore when I was buying EHG's new 7". love em. I'd love more bands that sound like this, so feel free to recommend me some.

favorite song by them: http://colonyhc.bandcamp.com/track/wher ... used-to-be
another good one: http://colonyhc.bandcamp.com/track/numb the transition at around 25 seconds is fucking KILLER.

None of those bands are hardcore, though. Don't know why metalheads are so quick to lump hardcore and crust into one. They're completely different.

Hardcore punk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ooeRpSyYw0

Crust punk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNWSBqu4S6w

1. No sadly not :( I've looked for them, but as far as I know there isn't one. Hope someone can correct me!

2. What do you mean by your area? If by area you mean "California", then congrats, you live in probably one of the best places in the entire world that has a punk scene! I envy thee, one day I want to go to California and see it for myself. About half of my favourite punk bands are Californian. If you mean Novato though then I can't help you...

3. I'd say there's a split in the punk scene between edge and non-edge, about 50/50... Most American HC bands tend to be edge, while most European bands, tend to be, not (same goes with the fans). This is my experience anyways. A lot of my favourite punk bands are straight edge so you're in luck! (Although I don't know any grind bands that are straight edge)

Straight edge punk (I'll start off with the classic, the band that started the movement)

Minor Threat - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn7549lL90M
Coke Bust - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YujBYv-8L5Y
The Rival Mob - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-sWoq1zBnI
The Teen Idles - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2djFnOaJ_m4
Rotting Out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5JxGjDtsnA
7 Seconds - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2LupsLlx1M
Limp Wrist - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc4Q1fQFNPs (they're straight edge, but their lyrics mainly focus on the queer movement)

I'm not straight edge in the slightest, I do everything, so often I feel kind of guilty if I'm ever stoned and sitting there listening to Minor Threat prant on about how drugs are bad :D

Enjoy!

Some Cali PV greats you should definitely look into, though all these bands are done for the most part:

Despise You - The Westside Horizons album would be a great place to start. The best PV band of all time imo
Spazz - Crush Kill Destroy is my favorite but La Revancha gets a lot of praise as well. They pretty much wrote the book on the style most current bands ape
Crossed Out - Just find their discography. The other band most current pv bands are aping
Capitalist Casualties - Disassembly Line is a good place to start.
Infest - The Mankind 7" is my favorite of theirs

The Grindcore Help Thread might be a better place to look for pv/grind recs in the future:

As for Colony, maybe check out stuff like Nails and All Pigs Must Die. That style isn't really my bag but you might dig those.

Also, that vocal recording pic confirmed what I suspected: SLK records shirtless in a sweaty caveman-like delirium. You can almost hear the man stink in the recordings.

I'd recommend Peter and the Test Tube Babies to a metal fan based off their riffs and guitar melody lines. Especially the "Mating Sounds Of South American Frogs" album. Derek "Del Boy" Greening was a very solid guitarist.

Doom/Disrupt/Infest/Crossed Out/Nausea/Siege- there's your hardcore/crust punk homework

None of those bands are hardcore, though.

The fuck?

also, you should learn to read. the poster said "hardcore/crust". that means "HARDCORE AND CRUST" not "I'm putting a slash between two distinct terms because I'm under the impression they mean the same thing, and I just like to be redundant". There's no evidence of "lump[ing] hardcore and crust into one" in that post just because they are mentioned together.

Furthermore, not everyone is such a dork when it comes to being overly speciffic with lame genre descriptors... it's perfectly fine to call Infest and CO "Hardcore" music... because, when you get down to the basics of it, that's all the fuck it is.

Finally, I am the resident generalizing metalheads-generalizer around here. This town ain't big enough for the both of us, mister know-it-all!

:boo:
Continue...

Also, thanks for the Provoked-related recs, urrbady... I'll check those out soon.
