I like live albums where you get an ordinarly short song, and then live they do loads of improvisation and make them a lot longer. Like the rainbow live albums, all the songs are between 10 and 25 minutes long mostly, this is the sort of thing im after. Any metal genre will do, just stuff that deviates from the norm.

dont like - tracks just called guitar solo where the dude just shreds insessently for 7 minutes, looking for varied and interesting stuff.

i'm into Phish and U-Melt (fans of Zappa/Floyd/Rush/Yes MUST MUST check these guys out. MUST!!!!) so jamming and improvisation is a huuuuuge cornerstone of my life.

I'd LOVE to find out some live jam material from metal bands. The closest thing I've ever seen/heard for death metal jamming, aside from almost all of Trey Azagthoth's solos, is the ending solo on "Invocation of the Continual One" from the Formulas bootlegs that are around... they jam out the ending for a good 8 more measures at least, and it could have gone on even longer, but then Pete just ends it with a rave-out on his kicks and cymbals......

anyway, not to spam these guys or anything, but U-Melt is seriously brilliant. They've covered Zappa's ENTIRE "Apostrophe" album, as well as Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" album, and (although i'm not that into it) they did The Police's entire "Synchronicity II" album. Theyre fucking sick... progmetal meshed with synthed-out Floyd dreaminess, INSANE guitar and keyboard chops, and uber-deep dance grooves.

some songs to check out:

A Portrait of Kismet
Schizophrenia
Escape
Tiny Giants
Impedimenta
Clear Light

theyve got an ass-ton of more awesome songs, but they are more chill and not as metal-ish as those. you can hear most of these songs from this show (audience tape, but it sounds really good)

anyway, thats my shpiel... lol

Well, it was supposed to be a normal show, but the Jordan Rudess' Keyboard broke down, then...

Metallica probably have something like that on one of their live albums, but going by how obscure the tastes are on this site, my post is probably useless haha
