Looking for rock/metal bands where women are the main singers, but as I want to disqualify a bunch of stuff because I don't want the replies to be filled with shit I already know and don't want to see.

- No Pretty Singing (aka "Beauty and the Beast" gimmicks)
- No European-style Power Metal, especially anything adjacently gimmicky like symphonic shit.
- Metal by MA standards, so no Nu Metal or Core like Kittie.
- No 80s NWOBHM-type shit. I love that sometimes but I already know Girlschool and all that.
- 90s Alt Rock. Like L7, PJ Harvey, or Courtney Love n all that shit.

Essentially, I want to see women who fuckin rock. Stuff I wanna see:

- Unusual, avant-garde women. Think Diamanda Galás or Nina Hagen. Think King Diamond (I know he's a man, shush), who is able to sound abrasive to pop audiences without necessarily doing extreme metal vocals.
- Goth Rock women like Siouxsie Sioux who can sing femininely without seeming like they're boxed in.
- Voices with grit that sound both real and good. Don't give me shit like this Liliac song
Spoiler: show

- Bands where the vocals are not only good, but also compliment already excellent instrumentals.

If I get some good recommendations out of this, I will be very grateful. I'm trying to make a playlist for my mom and also I just generally feel like I should know more women-fronted metal bands as someone who explores a lot of metal.

A Sound of Thunder (Out of the Darkness)
Avatarium (Hurricanes and Halos)
Crystal Viper (Legends)

Vulpynes. A lesser known Irish duo with a knack for writing catchy rock songs.

Then there're more obvious ones like Windhand and Subrosa.

By the way, one of the bands where early Bolt Thrower took lot of inspiration was Sacrilege. What a hell of an album Behind The Realms Of Madness was in 1985 with Lynda on vocals and fantastic Crust-Metal guitar storms.

I am extremely picky when it comes to female rock and metal vocalists, but Darby Mills from Headpins rocks.

This reminds of the kids that grew up with their parents never telling them to go rehearse/practice and still telling them they sound great.

Hellion's singer sounds great. Give Up from the Depths a go; which ranges from ballsy 80's metal to epic Sabbathian stuff.

For more avant garde, try Fatima Hill's Valhalla Weird 70's proggy inspired metal with a unique vocalist.

Mystery Blue write some blistering crunchy trad metal, very German in style, big riffs and angry choruses... check Claws of Steel and Hell & Fury.

The aforementioned Chastain is great old blistering USPM.

New bands Blood Star and Smoulder have brilliantly heavy, exciting new trad metal albums this year.

Messa is a brilliant doom band - lots of mysterious, raw, deep-felt mysticism and heaviness. Viscerally haunting, nothing cheap.

Madder Mortem have a lot of genuine unique, wild music with some of the best vocals - deep, throaty, just so evocative. Red In Tooth and Claw is a brazen, eclectic listen.

There are many ferocious Japanese HC bands both fronted by women and made up of women. Muga, The Gaia, Senseless Apocalypse, and so many others.
https://www.discogs.com/release/2345944 ... Liberation

http://kangnave.blogspot.com/2013/05/a- ... ock-3.html

The UK had some greats too. Health Hazard is a favorite.

There's a new batch of anarcho/gothy/indie bands that are great.
https://doveanarcho.bandcamp.com/music

https://dogmapeacepunk.bandcamp.com/music

and you can't forget about Poland. It's sort of signature element. Again, there are so many that I'm not sure where to start. Pieklo Kobiet is an often overlooked one. Homomilitia is another.

Crust has always had a decent female presence. Early ones were 13 and Nausea.

I am surprised no one mentioned Holy Moses, one of the few thrash bands of the 80s that had a female vocalist.

I'm listening to Omegashift's album right now and that gal has a mighty impressive set of pipes. Great music too. I'd categorize them as doom metal with an experimental edge. Fans of The 3rd And The Mortal should find a lot to like here.

Haha, yeah no I made this thread in part because I wanted to find stuff for my mom and she LOVES Heart and wishes she could sing like Ann Wilson, and she would definitely not be alone in wishing for that.

You did not exclude BM so here it goes:

Nornir - I think currently the best voice in BM. Such expression. Saw them live at the Heathen Invasion Brno last February, hope to get to see some concert with the new album

Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult of course. I missed a concert last month for professional reasons. Huge disappointment for me.

Been listening to the new Cobra Spell album these days, it's cheesy as hell but some of the tracks are pretty good.

I've had the latest Leonov playing daily since its release. These Norwegians play a sort of doomy, dreamy, introspective, post-rock/metal - and do so very well IMO.

The video you posted from Liliac doesnt do Melody( vocals ) justice. In yhe beginning she had a low voice, and that could be annoying after a while. Their most recent clips though, show a different vocal approach, that suits her and the band WAY better, so you really should give them a 2nd chance

Nothing wrong with women doing low voices, it just has to be done well, just as with anything. Though sure I'll try them again.

Not sure if this fits your request, but check out Karyn Crisis' Gospel of the Witches
Doom/gothic metal with a somewhat avant-garde approach, with female vocals that employ wide range of techniques, plus featuring Ross Dolan and Robert Vigna of Immolation fame. there might be some overlap with the -core and alt-rock styles in the vocals, yet I think it's worth a try.

Magali Luyten, here with Nightmare. I like both her raspy outlet and clean voice just the same.
