WarriorFenix, you remind me of myself 4 years ago :) Gorgoroth will grow on you; i was also unconvinced about them at my first dive into black metal. What else should you look at... For the raw side, Kult Perunov, Oгнеколо, Dark Promise, Praslovan, Witch Desire and Wendess
Although since your other first tastes of the genre are more melodic, I'll also suggest Pagan (the Turkish band), Stielas Storhett, Martyrium (German), Shadar Logoth(of Russia) and Eutonazia Kordax.

So most of my black metal is atmosphere driven. I'd like something with more concise song structures (by black metal standards of course) and more in your face riffing.

Since you said you had mostly atmospheric stuff, let's start with the essentials. I'll give more recommendations if you already know all of these.
- Arckanum from Antikosmos onwards. The earlier albums are more atmospheric, folkish and hazy.
- Behexen, especially before My Soul For His Glory, after which the band adopted some of that orthodox black metal atmosphere.
- Horna. Ääniä Yössä isn't a very good starting point if you're looking for very riff-based black metal, but any full-length besides that will do. Their discography is somewhat inconsistent. Sanojesi Äärelle is their masterpiece which they'll probably never top, but I'd leave listening to the entire work for later - at least check out a couple of other albums first.

The more aggressive stuff:
- Tsjuder
- Urgehal. Their albums got increasingly dark in the earlier days, the last couple of albums are quite similar. Atomkinder and Arma Christi are their riffiest, I think.
- Craft, when you crave something heavy and simple.

More melodic, still aggressive:
- Valoton
- Rage Nucléaire, though you've probably heard of this one since it has Lord Worm on vocals.

Some less essential ones:
- Celestial Bloodshed, one of the best Trondheim bands. They also have those Baptism-esque melancholic slower passages.
- Cornigr

Since John_Sunlight mentioned Warloghe, I'll also say Beastcraft, since it goes really well together with that. Note the Under a Funeral Moon worship.

I pretty much agree with Ilwhyan again...

for in your face riffing I would add Inquisition, Lugubre, Cirith Gorgor, Zwartplaag, Endstille, Besatt, Azaghal (Perkeleen Luoma) Svartsyn, Koldbrann, Zorn, Mgla, Sargeist, Vitsaus, and sorry I can never leave Lutomysl off my list!

As far as Horna is concerned I also love: "Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne" "Sudentaival" and "Hiidentorni" (this can be found on a 2 CD compilation along with some of their other early stuff)

Mgla and Vitsaus are more in the atmospheric territory, though. Inquisition is one of the riffiest black metal bands of late; I just think the riffs suck. :D

I haven't heard some of those (Zwartplaag, Zorn) and I don't remember what Lugubre sounds like. I guess I'll do some checking out aswell.

Zwartplaag and Zorn are great, Zorn's last album was a absolute beast, I don't know how they are so unknown... They just posted a rough mix from their upcoming album on facebook and it's going to be a masterpiece I think. Zwartplaag has incredible riffs, their overall style is more mid-fast paced, at least as far as the drumming is concerned. Their riffing style is definitely "In your face" though. Lugubre's last album is extremely fast and aggressive, one of my favorites.

Here's a few samples:

Zwartplaag: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlmCfjbaH0c
Lugubre: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ks2t3EpqdJw
Zorn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3BLPLPGzjo
EDIT: Another awesome Zorn song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koKN6vyyCwA

Can anyone recommend me something like Craft's latest album 'Fuck the Universe'? Hateful, some punkish riffs, misanthropic. Horna and Urgehal come somewhat close.

an example:

Horned Almighty, Ravencult, Maniac Butcher -Masakr, Koldbrann - New album "Vertigo" and previous album "Moribund" Maybe Moontower's last 2 albums, Armagedda. I'm no expert on punk, but these bands come to mind.

Pathless, you'd probably get a kick out of Grand Belial's Key. They're punkier than Craft, but perhaps not quite as heavy.

Sorcier des Glaces: A great old school 2nd-wave worshipping yet melodic band from Quebec. Really anything from the Quebec scene is great and worth checking out.

great taste man, i really enjoy Grand Belial's Key. That's some oddly melodic hateful black metal with that classic sound that those guys pull off.

I've heard them before but I thank you for the recommendation.

I'll check some of those out, thank you.

Someone told me to try out the new Kriegsmaschine and it was pretty lame. Not directed to anyone, but one thing I am not looking for is black n' roll.

Axis of Advance, Sacramentary Abolishment - blackened death metal in the same vein as Order of Chaos. Has that nice bestial sound to it as well. I strongly dislike bestial shit, but this stuff is tops and I really do recommend them.

Weapon - Imagine more technically competent Hellhammer riffs with a strong black/death influence. Another instant modern classic. Their newest album RIPS.

Hopefully that satisfies your Canadian BM cravings.

Yeah, I thought you might have. They're not exactly unknown. I've been trying to find similar sounding bands for a long time without much success.

Armagedda is probably the most outright similar band to Craft I can think of. Start with Only True Believers.

Mention something you've heard and liked first? How raw?

All of these songs can be considered raw black metal, so you'll have to mention some other aspects you want to hear in the music.

Sorry about the vague request, but I'm not too familiar with raw black. I knew most of those bands, but I would like the music to be even rawer but still good/listenable.

A Swedish band not many people are familiar with- Cursed 13. Similar in style to Craft, with an extremely thick, heavy production. You will enjoy them!

Alright. There are still incredibly many bands that fit the bill. I still don't know if you want murky rawness like Archgoat or trebly LLN sound like Belketre.

Vitsaus, especially Ruumiinvaellus EP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEVCROW ... ults_video
Verivala, couldn't find the Kiirastulen Vangit demo on youtube, it's even rawer than this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdiqBRRuMtA
Vordr is pretty raw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNJULdJaIoM
Void Meditation Cult https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taTOy6kv2Rk
Valonsurma, the other demo is even rawer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQsjUMGMOf8
Ash Pool https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWBUoR0rkQw
Azhubham Haani and Dysentry (Swe) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_2wcdBHsZU
Bloodhammer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1NMHTUStII

Thanks Malthus, that sounds pretty cool actually!

does anyone have any black metal that's vile, misanthropic and chaotic both lyrically and musically? Like Anaal Nathrakh I guess. By misanthropic I don't mean the typical Nietzsche stuff, but stuff that seems to echo truth and strike a part of your brain I guess. Stuff that is genuinely disturbing lyrically

Autarcie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv-Q4HDQ5DA
Akitsa - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY1ZxkAE678
Peste Noire - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo2nZVnhdIQ (you probably know them, but just making sure)

Sorry I can't make more recommendations, but most of the more obscure bands I listen to fit into the 'melodic' category.

Listen to Hammerheart, you'll be transported back to earlier pagan times, where you and your kinsmen ready the Dragon ships under grey stormy skies, as flecks of sea spray blur your vision and crying seagulls wheel around you.

Quorthon never sounded so passionate, it's his best release

When the wind cries out my name
And time has come for me to die
Then wrap me in my cape
And lay my sword down at my side

Hey, can you guys rec me some bands that make prominent use of the bass, or preferably only use bass instead of guitars+bass, like Necromantia and their dual 8-string bass thing? I'd be even happier if the vocals were similar to "triumph of death" era Hellhammer.

Defuntos are a lo-fi doomy BM band from Portugal who just use bass and drums, which gives the music a very sparse, almost post-punk feel. Definitely worth checking out.

Thanks, man. I've got a lot to check out, don't know a lot of these.

As for the person who wanted black metal with prominent bass, this isn't really that similar to the two things you mentioned, but Clair Cassis has some majestic bass lines that are very prominent. If you do check them out, don't bother with the EPs - one is downright bad and the other is nothing special.

I usually despise symphonic elements in black metal but there are a handful of bands that I don't mind. Since you've already mentioned Carach Angren, the other band that I enjoy is Vesania.

Isn't Clair cassis by the same people behind velvet Cacoon? Read some interview where that guy basically said he hated black metal and black metallers, thought we were all fake idiots, and only made black metal to laugh at and make fun of the scene. I for one can't possibly listen to and enjoy black metal made by someone who hates black metal. Especially one that supposedly is addicted to dxm.

That would be the guy. I wouldn't take anything they say in interviews seriously, they're notorious for being liars. I take everything they say with a grain of salt now. These are the same people that pretended to be institutionalized and made up that whole stupid diesel harp thing. Dumb antics for sure, but I enjoy the music. Clair Cassis is feature somewhat of the same sound, just more melodic and shorter more orthodox song structures.

Hmm I probably will still check it out. But I just can't stand those type of antics. Like if you really don't like black metal don't make it. And if all you want is publicity just let the music speak for itself.

Check out Gallhammer's latest album. There's only vocals, drums and some layers of distorted bass.
