Been revisiting Sabbat's The Dwelling lately. Now I couldn't get into this earlier but now I just love it. The dark, at times somewhat doom-y vibe, charismatic vocals and the amount of I-don't-even-want-to-know-how-many-riffs that keep popping up....excellent epic.

Is there any album that shares the same sort of musical vibe of them however? I've been listening to the first two and they seemed quite first-wave-styled black metal which is ok to me but I'm just not crazy about that stuff.

Perhaps it's not quite what you're looking for, but Verdunkeln has some songs like that.
Here's one off of their second album: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4mGOWvT_QWo
And one off their debut: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3tDKciwhr60

The second song lacks the chanting you're looking for, though.

Excuse the double post, but does anyone know of anything similar to these songs? Lots of acoustic guitars despite a clear black metal influence.

Grav -- Likfärdsvals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN21UxVZ2-A
Hädanfärd -- Likåsakans Urskallande Helgedom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3PzcKSM4r0

I'm very familiar with most of Sir N and Swartadauþuz's bands, so anything other than that would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, seconded. I strongly disapprove of NSBM but dilemma struck one I came across United Aryan Evil because it's seriously one of the best BM demos I've heard. The guitar tone on that one just radiates this really ancient vibe and shit

It didn't click the first time I played it, but I understand your recommendation now. It's a very good rec. Based on the song you shared, I wouldn't be surprised if Lifelover inspired Sir N to some extent. It also reminds me of Apati.
I'll look into Lifelover's other stuff soon. Thanks.

;-) You can also try Shining; it's different in a way, but has acoustic guitars here and there.

almost purely acoustic
...and two great songs from previous album:

Random recommendation not related to any request:

Listen on headphones while walking or cycling through nature. Most hypnotic black metal song I have ever heard.

Some years ago I stumbled upon this band who just release one EP in the 00's I believe that played something somewhat similar to Blood Fire Death era Bathory. Does this ring a bell to someone?

You're not thinking of Hunters Moon are you? More specifically their The Serpents Lust EP? Fits the bill perfectly...

That's it! Thanks CrushedRevelation!

How do you people feel about Tormentor from Hungary? Their second demo is pretty solid, if far more thrashier than I had expected. ''Elisabeth Bathory'' is such an epic tune. The countess of my fiiiiire!

Can anyone familiar with Wold tell me which releases to aim for first/avoid? I bought the demo Badb the other day, and I'm loving it.

I'd like to find bands that sound like Deathspell Omega in their more melodic and psychedelich parts. Think the intro to Kénôse I, the outros of Mass grave aesthetics, Phosphene and The shrine of mad laughter.

EDIT: More indications as to what I'm looking for:

This is far from an exact match, but I have a feeling you might enjoy this album if you liked that preview.

 You mean trite, hackneyed heavy metal with black metal vocals? No offence, but in an ideal world, schlock like that shouldn't be called black metal.

I think Sielunvihollinen dabbles in that kind of thing. Tired, dime-a-dozen schlager melodies and all.

 Sorry if I came across as cocky. That style just goes really against the grain for me, is all.

I showed that to another guy, and he said it was a bit like Goatmoon. Not incorrect, I suppose.

I guess Ilwhyan doesn't like Sielunvihollinen, I think they're good... They are often "upbeat" but have some cool solo type leads actually and I find them quite enjoyable when I'm in the right mood. They posted a 0% review jokingly on their FB awhile back, the review basically said "rawr I'm too kvlt to enjoy anything" It was kinda funny. Also they are one of the few bands I've seen with enough balls to post anti Islamic images and I guess that's in their lyrics not that I can understand any of them.

Looking for black metal that uses eerie, medieval-sounding organs in their music. Emphasis on the eerie bit since this has organs but it's more depressive/melancholy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cp026BDPrQg This is not what I'd like
This is what I'm looking for instead:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_HrSkdoOG8 (something like this but with guitars of course)
https://youtu.be/kTZl1Hoiyt8?t=133
Ambient stuff is welcomed as long as it's of the older, Burzum-ish type.

What's up with some metal bands (Finnish in particular, with exceptions) using very punky sounding riffs?
Horna - Kuoleva Lupaus
Satanic warmaster - Burning eyes of the werewolf
Goatmoon - Quest for the goat
Bilskirnir - Reconquering atlantean supremacy
seriously, a lot of these riffs make me wanna dust off the old skateboard. It's all undeniably Black metal, but I really love that integration with riffs in a major key. Anyone got any more that use this style of song writing?

Just listen to more Finnish BM! It's pretty much a hallmark of the national sound. I think Sargeist do it a lot more often than Horna: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AfobG55yu8

Or maybe Norns (later Nattfog): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0JfMS3RhxY

Or Hämys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JX_vxK2Fu4

Been considering diving back into some black metal after a pretty long hiatus away from the style. I generally like my BM to be a little more melodic and bombastic, so my go-to's are typical Swedish-style bands like Sacramentum, Necrophobic, Dawn, Emperor, etc. I wanna check out some 2nd wave 2nd stringers that I never heard before, especially anything in a slight prog/viking/melodeath variety. Where would ya'll recommend starting with bands like Borknagar, Windir, Kampfar, Falkenbach?? Also, lots of people are talking about Taake lately and they have a pretty large discography idk where to start with.

Basically I'd be interested in hearing any cool BM albums that are somewhat unique in an "epic", catchy/memorable sort of way. Old or new!

Equally great? Not a chance. After 'Bjöervinn" it went down the drain. Best is 'Nattestid' and everything before that.

Love how a "hey I can play black metal too" third tier band got a status like that. If you wanna listen to an assortment of ideas borrowed from better, earlier bands, that's your go-to band I guess.

Anyway, first of all, forget about Borknagar and Windir. If there's a line where melodic and bombastic stuff just becomes saccharine wank, those bands shot past it like they're trying to chase Lone Starr at ludicrous speed.

The first two Falkenbach albums are surprisingly decent for something so upbeat, there's a weird "so bad it's good"-charm about it, like an early no-budget splatter movie. It's similar to Bathory halfway between BFD and HH, but with really dorky synths.

Kampfar, the first EP and debut album are more icy black metal with folkish melody elements, the second EP and sophomore album go more in a melodic and less church-burny direction.

For epic black metal, this for some reason has always been my favourite:

Why is Azaghal always left out of the "awesome Finnish black metal" conversation? They are one of my favorites, been following them since they only had 2 albums, and they've been one of the most consistent bands I can think of. I would check out the Luciferin Valo album first, it's a good middle of their discography album and it's raw, anti melodic and slightly punkish. Overall it just rocks. They also had a really good side band called Vultyr

Dodsferd is another good sometimes very punkish sounding band, his releases vary in sound greatly though and he also has a side project called Nadiwrath that is like blackened punk, a little too punk for me I think.

How about some Blood of the Moon?

So new Hermóðr is out, and by Jove is it again a very nice slab of Burzumish black metal. How this guy keeps putting out album after album I don't know. You guys should check it out.

Anyway, I noticed Rafn has a huge number of projects. Anyone knows if there are any gems in his other bands?
