I must admit that while the concept of a major key black metal album would usually sound absurd to me, Dip did a good job with this one.

Continuing the random suggestions I just found 2 bands that are totally kicking ass right now.

Don't know how I found this, but it's got the darkest, densest atmosphere while also being full of excellent guitar leads and other surprises. I really love this little gem of an EP: https://imhatarikat.bandcamp.com/album/kenoboros-ep

More straightforward, raw, aggressive and hateful stuff: https://vidargangr.bandcamp.com/album/a-world-that-has-to-be-opposed

Imha Tarikat was pretty good, but Vidargängr completely ruled. Will be tracking this down, you can bet on that.

Seconding this - highly recommended! ;)

You may also like some of the bands that inspired me:
  • Cirrhus
  • Dekadent
  • Grand Mood (especially the song "Final Urge to March", which unfortunately isn't on YouTube)
  • Tukaaria (this is also relevant to The Ardbeg Wizard's request for things similar to Rhinocervs)

Is there any catchy, raw black metal out there? Wish I could give you an example, but I'm not well-versed in raw black metal.

Vlad Tepes for sure, but for something newer there's Axis of Light, Belliciste, and Forgjord for starters.

I know about Vlad Tepes, though it's been a long time since I listened to them. The other bands sound pretty good, will give a proper listen later. I really like that I can hear the bass in the Belliciste album! If you've got anymore stuff like this feel free to share!

if you want to re-check vlad tepes, try the drakkar prods. bandcamp. their back catalog has been re-released re-mastered.

@ZOMBIE Yeah both Belliciste releases are awesome and they are set to release a bunch of new stuff this year. I only realized recently that the guitar/vocalist is also in Barshasketh, completely different styles. I've also been looking for new "raw black metal" lately, Axis of Light is the best I've found so far.

Here's a few more worth checking out... I haven't actually fully listened to all of these. Ende isn't exactly "raw" but this album sounds like it's straight out of the early 90s and ends with a badass Vlad Tepes cover featuring the actual VT vocalist, try song 5 and 8. Eternal Alchemist is borderline raw too, but just really good.

I think a lot of the raw Finnish traditionalists are fairly catchy. Stuff like Horna, Sargeist, Satanic Warmaster, etc. Perfectly executed trademark black metal with all the memorable riffs and melodies and Darkthrones that make BM fun even if it's not supposed to be fun.

There's a whole cargo load of BM/punk hybrids that do the same formula but condense it down to more succinct and digestible outbursts. Early Raspberry Bulbs, Sump (who incorporate oi kindsa stuff), Sejr, Redflesh, Bone Awl...

Peste Noire is generally on the raw side with their distinct metal, and also toss in influences from punk and medieval style folk (which is always catchy)

Catchy raw black metal, like, don't really need to sift through a lot of recommendations and just listen to Akitsa's Sang Nordique and La Grande Infamie albums...

Apparently the new Cosmic Church won't be released till next year, but there's a split album coming up: http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Co ... ven/637771

Although I don't know about the other band, I'm pretty stoked. Cosmic Church's quality has been steadily superb on all releases regardless of whether it's a split, demo, EP or a full-length album.

Hi! I'm looking for anthem-ish black metal. Think Mgla's 'With Heart Toward None' and what was released before, not after that. Venomous and ferocious, yet melody.

Way better than the first album IMO, the split with Sad and this are their best so far.

Random recommendation... Between early 90s second wave back metal and late 90s second-wave-copycat "true black metal", there was mid 90s black metal, which really was a thing of its own...

Hello

I am looking for some recommendations on the 'DSBM' genre, term that i hate quite a lot by the way.

I like the harsh, despair screams type of vocals.
My favorite song since a long time is The Prison of Mirror by Xasthur.

Here are my favorites:

Xasthur - (Subliminal Genocide - album of prison of mirrors, so there's that)
Forgotten woods - (as the wolves gather)
Photophobia - (I Love the 'Humana Fragilitas' album. One of my favorites)
Nykalgia - (the self titled album is my favorite)
Lost Inside - ('cold days')
Sterbend - 'Dwelling Lifeless' is very good
Mortifera - (Vastiia Tenebrd Mortifera)
Austere - ('to lay like old ashes')
Gris - ('Il etait une foret')
Bonjour Tristesse - ('par un sourire')
Sombres Forets - ('Quintessence')
Lifeless - ('Inner shouts from a sad soul' is quite relaxing)
Coldworld - (same as lifeless, very relaxing)
Through the Pain - ('Time heals nothing')
Borgne
Wedard
Wehmut
Wigrid
...

There are a few more that I like a lot but I think you get the point.
I don't like lifelover, Nocturnal Depression and silencer because of the vocals.

Shining I'm also not a big fan of but there are a few songs I like, but I'm not a big fan of the vocals or the general atmosphere.

Thanks.

Check out Cosmic Church - Absoluutin lävistämä, and if you like it, go on with the early demos in reverse chronological order, then Arcana Dei and Syysauringon vihkimys.

Also check out:
Mortualia - Blood of the Hermit
Blood Red Fog - s/t (this is not their best album, but it fits your request best)
Arvet - Aijna

These aren't strictly DSBM, but they're black metal that is quite depressive, and I hope what you consider to be despairing, lifeless vocals.

Looking for symphonic blackened death metal bands with a 90s style production sound along with riffing similar to Demontuary, Emperor, and folk sounds.

Example of Demontuary's production and riffing:

Also can't go wrong with Forteresse, especially their last album

Maybe SSWG might fit the bill as well

Have you heard Naðra? It's not as polished and musically stripped-down as Mgła, but I reckon it has a somewhat similar fusion of melodic anthem and black metal abhorrence.
