I'm looking for metal that sound like the earliest Black Sabbath: Paranoid and especially the self-titled. The Warning is by far my favourite song. The things I'm looking for are:
- "Traditional Metal"
- Heavy blues
- Doomy and gloomy sound
- All instruments participate in the music. Drums and bass guitar are equally important and creative as the lead guitar and the vocals.
- Great and preferably long instrumental parts in which elements from different genres (blues, jazz) are explored

I see their Satori album is the highest rated. Is that also the one that fits these requirements best?

Yeah I think so. I would also check out Made In Japan.

It still knocks me on my ass that FTB covered "Black Sabbath" the same year it came out. For being on the other side of the planet, those Japs were remarkably in touch with western music.

Electric Wizard's Dopethrone sounds a lot like Black Sabbath's Master of Reality.

Wino-era Saint Vitus (1986-1991) would definately qualify. In fact, the first time I heard a Saint Vitus song I actually thought it WAS Black Sabbath.

Sweden's Witchcraft do have something of a Sabbath influence, but to me they remind me more of a Jethro Tull or Uriah Heep type of band, i.e. a little less metal and a little more European '70's hard rock. (I think they are great band though regardless.)

Pretty sure Candlemass's "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" qualifies

Seriously the riff after the acoustic intro of "Solitude" sounds like its a modified version of the riff for "Black Sabbath"(the song), although with more notes and slightly sped up.

Personally I find a lot of similarities between Type O Negative and Black Sabbath. They even cover Paranoid on The Origin of The Feces..but you may not feel the same.

I'd also put forward "From The 13th Sun" as well. Songs like "Tot" and "Elephant Star" are respectively dead ringers for "Black Sabbath" and "Symptom of the Universe"

Seconding Pagan Altar. The Sabbath vibe they exude is immense.

"Satori" isn't like earliest Black Sabbath!!! Why would you recommend that when it clearly isn't even close?

Rev Biz on the other hand is an excellent recommendation (every song on that long EP sounds distinctly like "Sweet Leaf") as is Saint Vitus and Type O Negative (if somewhat more tangentally).

Thanks for all the recommendations. Great stuff.
- Reverend Bizarre: Exactly what I was looking for, but I don't really like the vocals. Great band anyway. I'll be looking more into them.
- Flower Travellin' Band: Interesting sound. They sure have some elements that I was searching for.
- Sleep: I already knew that band and their sound is absolutely great. They sure drew a lot of influences from Black Sabbath. However, they might be a little bit over the top on the stoner part. (I'm not referring to Dopesmoker, it's just a general feeling.) Still like it a lot though.
- Saint Vitus: This is absolutely great. Very doomy indeed. Perhaps I would like it even more if there was a little more participation on the bassist's part.

To further clarify my wishes. I'm looking for stuff that's similar in sound to the very earliest Black Sabbath. Master of Reality at the very latest, but moreso the bluesy, experimental perhaps a little un-metal sound of Paranoid and especially their debut album. After all, the song "The Warning" is what got me to start this thread.

How long until some douchebag recommends Agalloch?

Seriously though, check out Warning (Gbr), esp their album "Watching from a Distance".
