Hey all, well I just had a random craving for pirate metal at the moment, and despite my recent interest in the realm of black metal, i would ideally be looking for some blackened pirate metal... I do not know any bands of this nature, nor do i know any pirate metal bands by name atm.

However,

If anyone could rec me some normal pirate metal, seeing as black pirate metal probably doesn't exist/is hard to find, that would be fine, too.

Seeing as I'm just entering this genre, I am not picky as to what is being recommended, but later will probably find what i like most.

Note: i did a search for pirate metal on here and came up with nothing.. but i know it's out there.

The only thing I know of that's even remotely "piratey" and blackened is this Cauldron Black Ram band.

http://www.myspace.com/cauldronblackram

I'm also friends with the bassist from this band, but now that I think about it they are pretty much exactly what you're looking for. Maybe you'll like it, give it a shot.

(Note about them, they aren't on MA 'cause their demo is too...ghetto? but you could probably get it from them via myspace or something.)

As for more "normal" pirate metal? Alestorm and Swashbuckle are both the dress up, fun kind of pirate metal who are really into the imagery and stuff.

Running Wild are probably one of the first bands to incorporate pirates into metal music but they were less....gimmick-y.

Thanks for the plug Grimmig. I'm the bassist from GOA. It's true, most of our pirate theme is entirely lyrical, because when I think "pirate metal" no one certain style of metal comes to my mind. We like to avoid the typical power metal connotations that come with the name.

I would also suggest Scuurvy (yes two U's), from Australia. I believe they're on the archives. They have a rough, heavy sound and flamboyant pirate theme.

No one has mentioned them, so check out Swashbuckle. Pirate themed death/thrash.

Well have a listen to this song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp4pQwqdR98

It's actualy a pagan (viking?) black metal band but I find this particular song sounding very piratey. Well and vikings could be concidered pirates from time to time, no? :)

Carach Angren is exactly what you need. Its a sympho black metal band and there most recent cd is a nautical/ghost pirate theme and its actually really good for being a cheesy dimmu clone.

ALESTORM!!!
Personally I prefer their first album (Capt. Morgan's Revenge) to their second, but you can never go wrong with songs about undead pirates on a quest to bring beer to everyone.
Yes they are a power/folk metal band, but I don't think that they could have pulled off being pirates any other way. Hope you enjoy them :)

HAHHAHAHAHAHA DOOD thats what inspired me to look this stuff up!!!! it was recced in one of my former threads!

Btw, all the bands recced were awesome... especially ALESTORM, they had the most 'piratey' elements to them, the 'pirate-like' vocals were cool too...

OAKHELM. Viking pagan black metal from Oregon. I can't get enough of this band. The interludes are very "arr matey-ish" if that makes any sense.

Arcturus? I think that might be pretty good for what you're looking for.
I've only heard a few songs from them, so I'm not sure what to expect, but they dress as pirates.
