I'm thinking something along the lines of Warning's Watching from a Distance: traditional doom that is melodic but still retains that despair-ridden, all-is-woe feeling. Obviously, there isn't much along the lines of Watching from a Distance, but I'm not looking for clones.

Is there anything else like this?

Most of what I konw falls under the "epic doom" styling, but these bands are all rather melodic and emphasize dark, brooding atmosheres. Maybe not so much despairing, though

Check out Dantesco, (sung in Spanish I think) Funeral Circle, Altar of Oblivion, Solstice, (The New Dark Age album is essential) Ereb Altor, (Pagan/viking themed, but very much doom and quite sorrowful in it's power)

I may have a few more to suggest if you enjoy any of these
