I didn't find any threads about this, so I'll ask:

Can you guys suggest me some bands that have the good ol' classic rasp, like Morbid Angel's "Altars of Madness" and "Blessed Are the Sick"? Of course, for the latter, I mean songs like "Brainstorm", etc.

I really like this vocal style, and it makes me sad that nobody does this anymore (to the extent of my knowledge). So I guess this can also be a discussion about why people don't do it anymore? Is it bad for your vocal chords or something, or do people just think it's outdated?

Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
Samael - Blood Ritual, Ceremony of Opposites
A lot of early Swedish death metal bands.
The guy from Beherit uses a similar voice at times

I dunno I can't really think of many but I'm sure there are lots. I happen to like that vocal style a lot too, and also wonder why more bands don't do it. I think it's one of the best vocals styles for extreme metal.

Atheist and Cynic (the harsh vocals, obviously)?. They're not the full death metal "growls," but they're not at all clean.

I usually prefer this style to the aforementioned growl. It just sounds more...evil.

+1
Give this man a sigar!

Raspy old school halfgrunts are so much better than those modern day growls without dynamics which consequently sound more like the flushing of a toilet than a real human voice with evil intent.

The earlier demos are even better

I strongly reccomend you check out Exmortis's Descent into Chaos demo. This man offers some of the coolest raspy vocals I've ever heard. Sounds like he's truly possessed.
