I like a lot of grindcore, like Insect Warfare, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Napalm Death, Pig Destroyer, Retaliation, ENT, Oktober Skyline (but they have breakdowns?), Brutal Truth, Hatred Surge, and Trap Them. I also like a lot of Powerviolence, like Charles Bronson, Bucket Full Of Teeth, Fuck On The Beach, Los Crudos, Quill, Spazz, Siege, Crippled Monguloid, and Wilbur Cobb. Based of my taste in grindcore and Powerviolence, what else would you recommend to me that maybe mixes the intensity of powerviolence with grindcore? I'm also kind of looking for some grindcore that has slower sludgy parts.

@cloud197:Powerviolence/grind: Magrudergrind, Spoonful of Vicodin, Weekend Nachos (more powerviolence than grind though).

Sludge/grind: Maruta.

I really enjoy Gut's The Cumback, and I know they aren't straight up grindcore, but if anybody could rec me some stuff that sounds similiar that would really be appreciated.

If you liked nu-GUT, you cannot go past old GUT. Odour Of Torture is a fucking great album, much better than The Singles Collection, which suffers from too many overly long sampled intros. And check out Mucupurulent - Sicko Baby for more original groovy german goregrind. Another album worth checking out as well is Tu Carne - Me Quedo Con Tu Dolor! as it is one of their more almost total groove orientated releases. Then you have countless amounts of Mucupurulent/GUT inspired bands. Some are fucking A! most are pathetic, ill leave you to search thru myspace to find those bands yourself. I remember the band Shemale were pretty good, and had some GUT covers on their 2008 demo.

Mumakil's new album, "Behold the Failure" has leaked. Anyone hear it? I'm listening right now and it's really good. Like Rotten Sound fucked up on PCP.

I like it better. There's almost no squeals in it, and they've just stepped it up in general.

Still looking for recs for this, thanks =)

Misery Index. Their album Traitors. Aggressive-as-fuck deathgrind with this HUGE(!!) punk rock vibe/influence. The album is FAR too short, and leaves you wanting another good 10 or 15 minutes, and yet it would totally ruin it if it went on for any more. I NEED another album like this - I'm not familiar with their other albums, and one of the guys is ex-Dying Fetus, which I still need to check out more thoroughly. Shoot me some names, PLEASE!!

I gave it a spin a while ago, and based on first impressions, I have to say I enjoy Customized Warfare more, simply because it was heavier and had better riffs. I'll have to give it a couple of more listens though, as I was also chatting with people at the time.

"Customized Warfare" was a great album. They seem to have lost a lot of their brutal death influences on "Behold the Failure" though.

P.S. I downloaded the Insect Warfare EP from your blog.

I'm actually quite impressed with Behold the Failure. I also checked out Antigama's Warning which was released earlier this year and was also a nice slab of grind. Relapse should be releasing more albums like these, not Cosmogenesis.

I have yet to check out "Cosmogenesis". I haven't been in the mood for any technical death metal in months.

Ah, Warning is very good, but if you want the pinnacle of Antigama, go for Resonance.

I have asked this numerous times to zero avail.

The only grind album I *really* enjoy is Phobia's Cruel. That includes the rest of the Phobia discography. Is there anything on par with this album? I am assuming it represents the punk side of grindcore.

From what I've heard off Warning so far, it's pretty interesting, but the snare sound is atrocious. The tom sounds are rather amusing though.

@awm

I'll just take a shot in the dark here and recommend you Magrudergrind's Rehashed. It's essentally a mix of hardcore punk and thrash played at grindcore speeds. They don't have a bassist, so they sound rather thin, but they make up for it in speed and aggression.

Well I wont bother listening to Grinded Nig but for bands like Disrupt : early Phobia, early E.N.T, early S.O.B, Mass grave and Looking For An Answer. Also check out Doom, they are crust punk but they have a big influence on Disrupt.

What!?!? Cock and Ball Torture are awesome....!!

Those groovy riffs, the solid but "almost playing above their level, so it kinda sounds shitty - in a good way" drumming, the pitch shifted vocals....

personally, I think they are perfect....

Cock and Ball Torture is awesome, aside from Sadochismo which is just dull.

Mark: Egoleech is most definitely very metal (and the only reason why they're on MA really ;) and quite awesome at that, one giant death metal groovefest.

Their early pornogrind stuff is better though (but not metal, so that's probably what markthevictor is talking about), Opus(sy) IV is just tops. Cocktales is good but pales abit compared to Opus, but whatever.

They also love table tennis, in their words "Table tennis is our second name! Cock and Bloody Table Tennis (CABTT!!).

Get the rest of MI's disco, trust me, it's worth it. And they actually had a couple of ex-DF members involved, I believe. Dunno if they still do, I know Netherton is still with the group, but I think Sparky left a while back.

Man, you just sent me on a hardcore binge. I checked out their EP, No Results and it ain't bad. I personally find Cursed and Trap Them better though, more intense. Now I'm enjoying me some Catharsis. Powerful stuff. The fact that they manage to (tastefully) weave in double-bass and spoken-word sections into their sound should pique people's interests. And man, do I love these vocals. Raw, ugly, and ever so emotive. Think this will keep my appetite whetted until Converge's new release hits. :P

On topic, though, has anyone heard of the band Bodies in the Gears of the Apparatus? Really abrasive and aggressive stuff, sort of like Calculating Infinity-era-Dillinger Escape Plan beefed up by whatever Hulk is on. And damn do they have some interesing song titles.

What are the stylistic differences between grindcore and goregrind?
Is it just lyrical, or is it something else?
(Please don't bash me, as I've heard little of either outside Napalm Death, Pig Destroyer, early Red Chord, and Cattle Decapitation)

Apparently goregrind differs from grindcore in that lyrically it fixates on well, gore, features use of pitchshifted vocals, heavily downtuned guitars, and grooves. I'm no expert on goregrinf though, so you'll have to consult wigglygore or theposega.

Goregrind is just a fancy term for grindcore with a more death-y sound and lyrics about pathology and or gore. General Surgery and Haemmorhaege are outstanding examples of this.

It's evolved more into a simmering pile of infected shit Mark.;)

Basically goregrind is Carcass' first album and it's retarded afterbirth.

That's what I was thinking...
But just to make sure I'm on the right track, is Vaginal Chicken goregrind?

That's a tough one. I'd say Vaginal Chicken straddle the borderline between grindcore and goregrind. A lot of the riffs are very grindcore-ish, but the vocals are mostly super-guttural goregrind style vocals, and there are some goregrind-ish breakdowns and such. I'd say half and half.

EDIT: The archives say: Brutal Death/Grindcore. So there you go.
