I've recently rediscovered Mortem from Peru and man that band seriously rules. Made me think what the best South American metal outside Brazil is. The first Hadez album Aquelarre (sp?) seems quite good as well. I've only sampled the Totten Korps stuff up to the full-lengths but that band seems quite amazing as well. What's some great stuff I need to know?

I couldn't really get into Graf Spee when I tried, and I'm not sure about Parabellum yet, very chaotic stuff. Masacre didn't really impress me when I sampled them, but I'll try their EP once more at one point. Those are all the bands I know, I think.

Miserycore from Chile is pretty solid black/thrash, despite the somewhat crappy name.

Enemy is a pretty good brutal thrash band from Colombia. Very fast.

I'm not really big on SA metal in general, or maybe I've been spoiled by too much scandinavian black metal, but the most impressive thing I know from SA is cold's demo compilation "a call from the grimness". raw, freezing black metal from chile, with hints to, you name it, norwegian 2nd wave black metal, but this is really great. you can bandcamp it here: https://miseramuerteprod.bandcamp.com/releases

chances are you might like this, droneriot.

Being Chilean myself, there aren't many bands from this side of the world that I know that don't suck, however, a like these two:

Six Magics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZtg-RpTAS8

Cheesy and genereic power metal, but very good at that

Asesinos del Pentagrama https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us2gNxuTxCo

Great, great Speed/heavy from Panama

Brazil has one of my favorite scenes in all the world, their razor sharp, lightning fast brand of DM never loses my attention. Outside Brazil, there are a few similar bands though, one of which is Totten Korps. If you like them, also check out Orategod and Magnanimvs, both from Chile. Beyond that, are you looking for death metal or what? Because I know a lot of DM from that continent, especially Colombian brutal death metal.

Perversor(Who I'm listening to as we speak) and Hades Archer are pretty good. There's also Coffin Curse and Perdition.

Masacre (Col) - Requiem
Honestly, one of my favorite DM album of all time. Dark stuff, with a thin old-school production.
Try again, I'm pretty sure it will click.

Bewitched (Chi) - Hibernum in Perpetuum & Dragonflight
Doomy and Heavy, think a blackened Candlemass.

Witchtrap (Col) - Sorceress Bitch
Nice Black / Thrash.

You might also like (emphasis on "might") Death Kult (Col - DM), Lucera (Col - Black/Heavy) and Goat Semen (Peru - Black/Death).

Reencarnación are (were?) a weird/early Black/Thrash band from Colombia. I don't know if you'd like it, but their debut 888 Metal is worth hearing once anyway. It can be listened to in it's entirety on the Nuclear War Now! bandcamp. And they re-issued it recently. Or last year, I don't pay much attention to that label anymore.

I used to know more about this, damnit.

Edit: Oh, and Parabellum, another early Colombian "it was the eighties so everything with Satan in it is Black Metal"-band. Probably the first Colombian Black/Death group with recorded material out. They have, like, a compilation of all their recorded material I think. Don't know if it is easy to come by or not.

Watch some old archival footage of Parabellum performing here.

Medellin by Herpes is pure hate Death Metal amateur noise garbage. It's short too. Probably why I like it.

Edit 2: Goddamn reading comprehension. Oh well, the Parabellum video is still interesting for historical purposes.

Mortem is my favorite South American death metal band. I love the thrashiness, and Possessed influence.

Patecabra from Chile is a very good dirty black/thrash band.
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Patecabra/32436

Force of Darkness is solid black/thrash
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/For ... ness/29386

Sodomizer is some really good blackened speed metal as well. The Dead Shall Rise to Kill is a very enjoyable album.
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Sodomizer/17768

Power from Hell is another one I enjoy a lot. Very primitive sounding, and a big early Bathory influence.
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Pow ... Hell/87948

:edit: last 2 are from Brazil so you can ignore this part of my comment if you like.

I forgot to mention the black metal band Typhon from Colombia.
Their sole album is not perfect but interesting, at least for the historical connection to Mayhem if anything.

if you are into extreme thrash, like the good ol' 80's Kreator style, i can't recommend the bands Ripper and Terror Strike enough. both are from Chile, and both execute some of the best thrash riffage i have heard in a long time.

I'd highly recommend Condor from Columbia. Very well imaginative death/doom with some 70s prog influences, as long as you can get past the production. Their latest album 'Sangreal' was one of the albums of 2016 for me.

+1. Chile has a great underground thrash/death scene going right now.

Also from Chile, Procession, very good doom metal (Candlemass school).

Also from Chile, Iron Spell. Great trad heavy metal, more timeless than retro.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6OauGaTU3A

King Heavy, more doom here, of the Dantesco variety.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN2AwBT9xy4

And Procession is great. Chile really seem to have something going now.

Oh, and talking about doom, Mar de Grises is definitely a band you should check out

Youtube: show

I'm not very familiar with the genre so I don't know what similarities do they have with other doom bands, but they're certainly worth a listen.

Well, I am from Colombia and there are excellent bands of different genres nobody has mentioned here so far, so here we go.

If you're into thrash metal, with good production, insane elaborated riffs that will get you to the bone, then Dexteram, and their only full-length album so far 'The Hidden Face' is for you.

Youtube: show

There was (they splitted up) also an excellent band with a very conscientious approach to the ideas of nihilist philosopher F. Nietzsche, like Acutor with their only album 'Dios ha Muerto', all the lyrics in spanish.

Youtube: show

Legacy is a Speed/Thrash metal band of those that will keep you headbanging through the entire show with their insane speed sound. Just awsome.

Youtube: show

Changing the genre to Death Metal, and being aware that Masacre was already mentioned in other entries, I must recommend all the Vitam et Mortem discography. They have evolved their sound through all of it and I cannot say it's less than excellent in all aspects: lyrics, instrumental quality and originality and production. Songs like 'Looking my Decomposition', 'Asesinos en Esencia' and 'Yo soy el Siguiente Muerto' will rock you if you're into Death Metal for sure.

Youtube: show

Regarding heavy/speed metal, I cannot complete this entry without recommending bands like Nightmare (my personal favorite heavy metal band from all over the continent, I will say no more here), Revenge (it's hard to find these days a good speed heavy metal band and this is definitely one of those), Runner Hell (an excellent combination of powerful voice and the classic Heavy Metal sound, with elaborated riffs going in perfect harmony with the development of every song) and Iron Command (female beautiful but strong voice that will get you into every song with terrific supporting sound varying from the classic NWOBHM sound to a modern touch of Speed Heavy Metal). Here is a selection of good tracks from the previously mentioned bands.

Youtube: show

Youtube: show

Youtube: show

Youtube: show

That would be all for now, but there are a lot more. I hope you enjoy their music as I do.

Ariadna Project is a rock-solid power metal act from Argentina, and their 2016 album was one of my favorites of the year.

Nar Mattaru from Chile produce some exceptional death metal, at least on their latest album Ancient Atomic Warfare (can't comment on their debut, still been meaning to check it out). I guess they fall vaguely within the Incantation school, but Mattaru have a much more plodding, ritualistic vibe about them, which they back up with thick, expansive tremolo riffing and leadwork culled straight from the playbook of early/mid-period Paradise Lost. One of those few death metal bands that achieves a vast and enveloping atmosphere while still delivering outstanding and memorable riffs. Just a great and criminally overlooked band.
