That last track - Haunted Shores - Immaterial - RULED. I love blast beats in prog. If you liked that yourself then check out Triosphere. Female fronted prog that owns.

Shit man, didn't know what to expect but Triosphere own. Not usually a fan of female fronted bands, but she sings with more balls than some, that's for sure.

I was hesitant to rec Haunted Shores because their vocals are a bit on the core-ey side. Wish they'd just do instrumentals. Ah well.

Anyway, if Triosphere is any indication, maybe you'd like Concerto Moon?

Can't find any of their songs off that album with vocals on youtube, but the singer is quite good.

Concerto Moon rules.

I've always liked Elegy, but I never checked out their later albums. Holy crap, prog masterpieces. Guitar driven, riff-filled, prog. Check out "Manifestation of Fear".

Ark is also really good. Burn the Sun is Jorn Lande's best performance ever (he has worked on some steaming piles of crap, lol).

I'm looking for progressive metal like Animals as Leaders that has atmosphere, intelligent guitars/keyboards/bass solos/songwriting, and is mathematical.

Really yearning for that new ARK album right about now. Been listening to Burn the Sun a lot recently. What an absolutely superb group of musicians, and the "no rules" songwriting works wonders - I can't think of any other band that can even come close to their sound.

I would like some basic progressive metal, to get into the genre. With the usual, dual guitar, high vocals.
I already know the essentials

Fates Warning(my favorite)
Queensryche
Dream Theater(not a big fan)

something like that, but not as fruity or keyboardy as DT.

Check out Conception. No dual-guitar, but Tore Ostby alone is better than most guitar duos anyway. Also, Roy Khan on vocals.

I'm slightly amazed there's no talk about Dreamscapes' Fifth Season here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApTt2UmJwsc

There are some absolutely mint tunes on End of Silence and Fifth Season.

Edited.

I see I need to rephrase that as I was specifically talking about 5th Season.

I want some prog(any genre) with a great classically trained vocalist, good composition, atmosphere too if possible, and nice keyboards too if possible.

If at all possible, good lyrics too maybe.

Anyone have any good recs for progressive traditional heavy metal? Something like Dark Quarterer, John Arch-era Fates Warning, or Hammers of Misfortune.

I know some of the more under-the-radar ones, like Adramelch and Slauter Xtroyes.

Yeah. Chances are if it's a more well-known band, I know it.

What are some progressive metal albums that are considered classics? I want to get more into the genre, but I'm not looking for over top musicianship with songs over 15 minutes and such. Is there anything out there that sounds similiar to Fates Warning's ''Perfect Symmetry''? (varied songs, no overlong bullshit.) If not, what's some good progressive metal to start with?

Also try Glass Hammer for instrumental prog like AaL, very keyboard driven too.

Check out their album 'Lex Rex'.

For anyone who wants something like Chimp Spanner and Animals as Leaders check out these bands. A great list here

Disperse is an awesome ambient/technical prog band with the talented 17 year old Jakub Zytecki

http://www.myspace.com/disperseband

Jakub Zytecki, awesome blend of ambient and djent prog. Hes only 17 years old, really talented guitar player for that age.

I know this has been probably been requested and answered before, but I'm a lazy goon so I'll just post it here:

Anyone willing to recommend me some progressive bands with albums akin to Anubis Gate's last two releases, "Andromeda Unchained" and "The Detached?"

Going on a long due album binge, and would like to add some new bands to my collection.

I think some bands like Mastodon, Intronaut, and Burst are pretty good bands that have their own styles along with Prog Metal. Mastodon's brand of it is pretty intense as their music just led to Progressive Metal out of pure skill, seeing as they were extraordinarily amazing as a Sludge band.

I happen to be a big Royal Hunt fan.
The first three albums, including their first, "Moving Target" with D.C Cooper are not very prog-very melodic and speedy/classical if anything.

"Paradox" is a finer record that shows a bit more variation in terms of structure and performance. Enjoy!

Pain of Salvation is some good Prog metal to start with.
Tad Morose's "Sender Of Thoughts" will be good on you if you liked FW's "Perfect Symmetry".

...and for those classics,
Rush - Hemispheres
Rush - Moving Pictures
Dream Theater - Awake
Fates Warning - The Spectre Within
Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime
Symphony X - The Divine Wings Of Tragedy
Pain Of Salvation - One Hour by the Concrete Lake
Pain Of Salvation - Remedy Lane
Evergrey - The Inner Circle

Other really great Prog metal bands you should listen to are;
Mind's Eye
Galactic Cowboys
Tad Morose
Votum (especially "Metafiction")
Veni Domine
Brutal Hand
Intronaut
Mastermind
Ayreon

I'm looking for Progressive metal with very heavy and technical riffs, but, with only clean vocals, i'm starting a band with a drummer who likes to blast beat and do really crazy stuff but he doesn't like any tipe of screaming, and i don't know many heavy/progressive bands with only clean vocals... Nevermore is a good example of heavy riffing, but they are not that technical or progressive, i'm not looking for power metal vocals or very high pitched stuff, more like regular but decent clean vocals like the one in the chorus of A Certain Death by Misery Signals or in the song Firmament by The Ocean.

so... any recommendations?

Psychotic Waltz's first album might be interesting for you, although it does have some high-pitched vocals occasionally. It's really technical and some songs are actually a bit heavy. Like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jtjuZpI0xs

Wow man, that was pretty amazing! definitely goes to my music library for sure, if it had a little less high-pitched vocals and more blast beats it would be perfect!

It's hard (if not nearly impossible) to find prog with blastbeats as the two don't work together very well. Anyway I just remembered that you could appreciate some more fast-paced power/prog minus the high-pitched vocals. I remember listening to Manticora a while ago and liking it, try their "8 Deadly Sins" album, it has a very high average score here on MA.
