Can anyone give me a folk/pagan metal band with a very clear connection to Slavic folk music? The bands that go nearer to traditional music are usually kind of... Celtic...

Rasc, if you want to be openly slapped upside the head by Slavic folkishness, try Oprich. Did a split album with Kroda that's quite good, though a bit of an odd mixture with their campy style vs Kroda's more serious black metal base.

Свентояр's album Єдність is nothing but metal arrangements of Slavic (Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Russian) folk songs.

if, on the other hand, what you're looking for is Slavic bands who have a clear Celtic influence, these are the four clearest examples I know of:
Fferyllt - Dance of Druids [2009]
Fferyllt - Прорицание [2012]
Netherfell - Okryte Zapomnieniem [2013]
Oskord - Weapon of Hope [2011]
F.R.A.M. - Двери апреля [2010]

I like F.R.A.M. But curious what you find especially Celtic about them?

seriously? from memory, I'm pretty sure they've used two of the same Celtic melodies Eluveitie have used.

Edit: also, two of their singles are Celtic songs. though I've only heard their first LP.

Do y'all know of any very distinctly American folk metal? As in, using American folk influence instead of Norse/Celtic/whatever? Something with American folk instruments... like banjos and fiddles, and lyrics about American lore.

Man, those Celtic singles by FRAM are covers of Cruachan, not their own work. Doesn't really make them a Celtic folk metal band. Still, whoever's looking fir good folk metal, check these guys out!

Just gave a look to Свентояр and Oprich, that's exactly what I was looking for. I was actually trying to get a bit away of Celtic/Slavic blends, even though I'm really into bands like Fferyllt. I'll take a look at the albums I don't know yet, thanks.

one is a cover of a celtic metal band Cruachan

another is a famous Celtic (Breton) folk song

on their website they note among their influences Celtic influenced bands Eluveitie and Korpiklaani

the first song on their album uses a famous Celtic melody

other songs are played in the same style. but I haven't determined if any of the others are borrowed melodies, yet.

fiddling is common, Korpiklaani, Månegarm, Dalriada, Elvenking, etc.

banjos are pretty rare, and rarely heard amongst the metal parts of songs. Chain of Dogs and Cruachan are the only ones I know of where it's present, audible, and regular.

American folk is even less common. you can find some songs with a blues influence, or yoik singing which resembles native American chanting, but that's as much as I've ever seen, except for Canadian band Skymir

my request...

if anyone here really loves folk metal and wants to offer recommendations for, or input on, a little project* I'm working on, please send me a PM.
there're lots of recommendations I'm looking for, and hopefully other people have a bit of knowledge I don't.

*it currently cites over 400 folk metal bands... so people who only know Ensiferum/Eluveitie/Korpiklaani/Finntroll/etc. might not be a big help, but you can possibly still be useful if the albums you know you know very well (as I have only the most vague knowledge of some of the big names, like Folkearth, Suidakra, Windir, Moonsorrow, Kroda , In Extremo, Subway to Sally, Black Messiah, Finsterforst, Dalriada, Elvenking, Odroerir, Nokturnal Mortum, Primordial, Thrudvangar, etc.)

Hello!

I'm looking for bands like Empyrium and Estatic Fear.

I like their use of strings, and the sombre atmosphere. Growls are fine too.

Pretty cool folk metal from Québec, intricate, well produced stuff in French (pretty good historical lyrics), worth a look! This band shouldn't be unsigned :(

Really late to the party here, but I'd suggest Grai, at least on their debut. They just released a new album, but I haven't listened to it yet.

I would like to hear some gloomy and melodic folk metal with only clean vocals. I'm looking for something very close to this song.

only stuff I know with that exact mood is Agalloch, who usually have some harsh vocals.

what about Bathory?

or maybe Martolea. certainly gloomy, but not that same Ulver/Agalloch riffing style

Glittertind's latest album is mostly clean, gloomy folk metal. There's a lot of punk influence, though, but overall it fits the mood.

In Arkona's На Моей Земле from their Гой, Роде, Гой! album, who are the singers that come in at 6:32 and end at 7:16? And what band are they from?

What about the singer that comes in at 8:47 and ends at 9:53?

shit no! I'm well aware of the limits of my personal tastes, and the gaps it puts in my ability to help people out.

but since you say so, I may as well share the project I made last month (I'm pretty drained from it, and haven't heard so much as two new albums since then (I was prompted to check out Drenaï's kick ass debut recently), so there're still parts I haven't even bothered to complete, like mixes and descriptions.). Would love to have contributors to it, to offset the amount of error and bias inherent in being 99% the opinions and tastes of one person, but have been too preoccupied lately to join forums to promote it.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/2213086 ... 761756160/

I'm most pleased with the folk song covers section, because of how many I discovered that hadn't been identified as such, which I had no clue about before I started the project :)

Hello everyone!

I have a very vague, broad request. I'm trying to get into Folk metal. I love the lyrics, the atmosphere, the ambient instruments used with traditional metal ones; however, everytime I try to listen to a Folk metal album, I can't stay entertained with it to make it through the whole album.

My primary interests in metal music are Gothic, Black, Symphonic, Power, so I figured those genres aren't too far removed from folk metal. My first 'official' folk metal album I listed to was Kivimetsan Druidi's 2nd album (I forget the name of the top of my head). I figured it'd be an easy transition to enjoy Folk metal because Kivimetsan Druidi has like the Beauty and the Beast vocals, like gothic metal music. However, I found them, well, boring. It's not that they were bad, it's just they couldn't keep me occupied for listening. So I had to switch over to Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia by Dimmu Borgir to keep myself awake lol.

I would like to get into Folk metal. As I said earlier, I like everything about it, I just can't find a Folk metal band I enjoy, not that I looked very hard yet. So I would like to know what are some of the more popular Folk metal bands that you find very entertaining, and good listens, worthy of keeping in your music library. I don't want to just consult Last.Fm and get another cheap recommendation, buy their album, and can't even listen to the whole thing, like what happened to Kivimetsan Druidi.

Some criteria I'd like to instate: I don't want a purely ambient, or Folk metal band without metal guitars, female vocals are a plus (but they don't have to be the dominating voice), the more unique instruments the better. They can be clean or harsh vocals, although I prefer a mix of the two.

Thanks for any and all suggestions

One of my favorite folk bands is Excelsis, their earlier stuff is pretty heavily power metal influence but their latest album is actually quite heavy. I'm not too sure about the middle albums as they are kind of hard to find and I haven't been able to track them down yet.
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=excelsis

If you don't mind a little Jesus in your music then I highly suggest the band Holy Blood. Really strong and fucking heavy band that uses a lot of the typical folky stuff and just plays balls out and you'll probably like the fact that they mix a bit of black metal into their sound as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xxg6UwcfOro

@Kuwabara1997: I love folk metal and listen to a broad spectrum of that genre so I could recommend a lot. However, I'll give you, what I think, is the essentials....

Moonsorrow is epic and folk but just plain awesome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvG45d0etOc

Finntroll. There is a lot of Finntroll bashing on here but the same guy who writes Moonsorrow also writes Finntroll and they fucking rock.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv3nhsSAyTU

Windir. This is just genius.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6GWdwkXqhw

Asmegin - Hin Vordende Sod & Sø is one of the best folk metal albums ever. Too bad they did not keep the momentum going
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOWExckPG4Y

Korpiklaani. Yes, I love Korpiklaani. Their older stuff is a bit better but a fun band.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIc4VHxU7iM

Eluveitie. This is another band that gets a lot of flack but I like them a lot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AawUSC6hGY

Finally, you can't have a folk metal rec without the originals....Skyclad. I only like the Walkyier era, though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw-fX56FacE

There's more in my collection but this is what came to mind. I'll post more if you like any of the recs I gave you.

I actually really like all of those, especially Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani and Finntroll. I guess mainly because they're 'hardness' is similar to Black metal bands I like. Are their any other good, well known folk metal bands along the lines of those three? Also, if you could recommend any Folk metal bands with clean female vocals and harsh male vocals, that'd be great. Thanks in advance!

there's a 'two styles' subsection in the 'duets' section, which is mostly harsh male and melodic female vocals.

there're also 'black based folk metal' subsections in the main section of the gallery.

@Eroteric

Are there documents like this for every branch of metal? This is probably one of the best things I've ever opened in my life. It'd be nice if their were because you could easily shift through a library of the best of the best of each genre of metal.

thanks man.
I have no idea how well it would work for other genres, I only thought of doing it for Folk Metal because its diversity is easy to identify without any real knowledge of guitar playing/production/etc., which would account for a lot of the stylistic differences within subgenres of, say, Black Metal bands.

I have no idea how well it would work for other genres, I only thought of doing it for Folk Metal because its diversity is easy to identify without any real knowledge of guitar playing/production/etc., which would account for a lot of the stylistic differences within subgenres of, say, Black Metal bands.

You made that? Props to you man. Something like that is truly legendary. I spent about two hours sifting through it today, and plan to do more in the future too.

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to ask, but can you guys give me AS MANY AS POSSIBLE American webshops/distros that specialize in or have a sizable selection of folk/pagan/viking metal CDs? All I know right now are Hells Headbangers and The Omega Order. I'm looking for American shops as the shipping costs will most likely be the lowest, and I wouldn't have to worry about currency conversion. Also some sites in Eastern Europe don't accept paypal, and paypal is the only way I'm comfortable paying.
