I don't listen to Korpiklaani much, but if you're referring to the almost jolly atmosphere of their music then I would agree with you! Also just noticed the guy asking for recommendations has already been made aware of them so my mistake there for not reading above! :D

maybe depends what you're focusing on?

what did you like about the album? the production? the tempo? the riffs? the drumming? the clean vocals? etc. ...obviously not everything will be the similar on another artist's album that has some similarity.

the clean vocals, the riffs, and that same kind of atmosphere with the violin and flutes and stuff. Its hard because soo many other bands do the same thing but don't have the same feel if ya know what i mean.

Does folk metal also include non-Scandinavian local bands? If so, can you recommend (or suggest) me what are some good non-Scandinavian folk metal bands?

hell yea! Spain/South America has its style, Germany has its, Slavic nations have theirs, Celtic countries have theirs, Asian countries are now coming out with a lot more Folk Metal...

gosh, what do you like, genre wise? (rock/black/death/thrash/etc.) and vocal wise, clean or harsh, no power vocals, no BM screams, etc.?

otherwise you're just asking for every good folk metal band from 30+ countries :)

OK, so here's my criteria:
-Genre: Heavy, doom, thrash, black, death, all of them!
-Vocal: Either clean or harsh, power vocals or no power vocals, BM screams or no BM screams, I don't really care about this. What I care is that their folk style is thick enough.
-Country: Asian countries (especially Chinese and Middle Eastern), Southern American countries (I want to know how they combine their folk music with metal), European countries (especially German and Slavic), and Jamaican (just want to know if mento, ska, rocksteady, and reggae can be combined with metal) :-P

I don't know of any Jamaican metal, but there's a few ska-esque Slavic folk rock bands, at least by my extremely limited idea of ska/reggae/etc.

Would anyone know some folk metal with an upbeat or positive feel WITHOUT being cheesy? I don't have an example to pull from except this Polish band, Illuminandi, tends toward the direction I'm looking in. Here's a good example:
Hymn of All Creation

You can tell it's not overwhelmingly upbeat, but has a sort of jolly undertone to it, but especially without the cheese.

Also, I just like their folk metal stylings in general, if you can also find a band with a similar styling as Illuminandi. Nice balance of clean and harsh vocals. A sort of heroic singing voice. Good synergy between the strings and guitars.

Here's what they sound like when they want to be heavier:
The Rider (Jeździec)

first impression, it reminds me of Leshak / Лешак

hearing the second one you posted, maybe you'd like Haggard? more classical death than folk death.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtNAMXWGj5c
maybe even Drygva / Дрыгва (they make some really interesting stuff)

Another really good upbeat folk metal band that I just rediscovered is Irminsul. Seriously seriously overlooked band. Their debut is fantastic.

Okay, I absolutely love the new Mael Mordha album and I want more stuff with vocals like these. I just love the sense of pride in his delivery. I wish more pagan and viking bands would have this kinda vocals instead of harsh screams

Talking about Mael Mordha, are there any other bands combining folk metal with doom metal?

There's Kranium from Peru. As far as I can tell, their early material is death metal, but their 1999 full length Testimonios is really good folk/doom, though not like Mael Mordha. For the most part, the doom side is more old school doom, though there are some harsh vocals. They make use of a lot of folk instruments, which I always like in folk metal.

Kranium - El Obraje

I need some pagan metal that are rather dark than upbeat. I only know Moonsorrow and Primordial. The pagan lyrics/imagery is very important.

Still sticking to the black metal if you don't mind, you can find Odious, Darkestrah or Seeds of Iblis
There's also the folk bands Amassefer and Sand Aura

If you still won't mind the lyrics, the christian black metal band Antestor also used to have middle-eastern influences on their sound.
Hope this helps (=

Sorry if this has been posted before, don't come on here very much....

Has anyone found any folk metal that is influenced by Cajun Music? I had a crazy idea about how awesome that could sound if mixed with Black Metal or something, but alas, have not found a single band that fits that criteria...

Hey guys, I'm looking for more folk bm bands sounding somewhat like this.
I mean, very bad guitar/drum production, overlayed with synth/folk instruments.
I think it makes it sound kinda cute =P
Any recs?

Hey all. I need expansion of my Folk Metal knowledge. I really enjoy bands that have a mixture between Harsh and Clean vocals, folk instruments as well as keyboards as well as culturaly influenced lyrical themes (like mythology or ancient history. Nothing too serious though!). Also bands with a mixture between Power and Folk metal I love!

Good examples of bands I love are Vanir, Eluveitie, Skiltron, Tieramystica, Heidivolk and Ensiferum. English lyrics preferred, but not neccesary. Given this criteria, what can everyone recommend?

Nice song, but I feel the Black Metal influences aren't quite what I'm looking for. I'm more after something on the melodic side. Melodic Death Metal combos are certainly welcome, as well as Power combos!

A good, fine upstanding denizen of this board and regular of this very rec thread told me about Frosttide. Symphonic, melodic folk melodies in the Finnish vein.

A personal favourite of mine and one liked by a few around here is Aiumeen Basoa, melodic, symphonic, quite unique folk, with a mix of black and clean vocals.

Aether Realm will quench your Ensiferum thirst, as it's quite simply Ensiferum/Wintersun worship.

Hell yes, Aiumeen Basoa is just what I'm looking for! Funilly enough, I just recently descovered both Frosttide and Aether Realm. Both of which certainly hit the sweet spot for my folk metal tastes. Thanks!

Hey guys, I have three kinds of folk I'd like to hear but I'm not succeeding in finding them...
First, some good prehispanic folk metal. Must be extreme, no power-metalesque vocals please. Also I'd like the prehispanic influences to be evident.
Second, extreme vedic folk metal. I already know of Lykathea Aflame, Kartikeya and Cult of Fire. They three are good. Something similar to Kartikeya would be awesome.
And last, middle-eastern folk death metal. Middle-eastern black I already know a lot, I'd like death, and always with evident folk influence.

Any rec for any of those three will be appreciated, thanks.
