I don't know of any, really. I always have to make small orders at various distros as stuff becomes available. Wolftyr Productions pretty much specializes in folk/pagan stuff, but the shipping is outrageous unless you order a lot. Red Stream tends to get some good stuff in here and there, but you have to keep up with it because it disappears quickly.

Other than that, I tend to order from Ebay (like Metallic Media and Apothelyptic Reign) or from overseas, or from HHR.

Hey, I'm looking for folksy pagan black metal with a sound similar to Stworz's latest album (ex: stuff like this or this song). Just really painfully folky stuff like that, I really love the atmosphere it evokes. The melodies, the vocal style, the whole nine yards. My only wish is that bands not be NS or similar, which seems to be common at least in the Slavic pagan BM scene.

Thanks.

I've been looking, but does anyone know any good folk metal bands that make very heavy use of accordions and have mostly clean vocals? Bands like Korpiklaani and Alestorm?

I am looking for Folk Metal with a former Yugoslav sound. I know Stribog from Croatia but they do not have a former Yugoslav sound.

Here is some former former Yugoslav Folk music, I am looking for metal mixed with this:

Kalevala (the one from Russia, not Italy)
gorgeous female vocals, and awesome melodies on accordian (written by the guitarist, I believe)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLkN1BmgDHc

Svarga also uses accordian, but perhaps not as much.

Hey guys, I'm looking for German folk metal bands that have about a 50/50 split between clean vocals and growls and use a lot of symphonics. It would also be nice if the lyrics were Winter or Autumn themed, and if they weren't Pagan. Thanks.

Can anyone recommend something similar to Graveland's Immortal Pride? It's "pure" viking metal, less focus on folk elements, and a larger focus on epic songs, with those Hammerheart drums, loud guitar riffs and rich keyboard instrumentation.

I know Bathory and Falkenbach have several songs with keyboard heavy sections, but those two are pretty well known, so I would like to know if there are any other like Immortal Pride?

They're not exactly great, but Woodtemple is like Graveland, Jr.

I am looking to get deeper into folk metal but not sure where to go, folk metal bands I currently listen to are Ensiferum, Falconer, Turisas, Tyr, Korpiklanni, Eluveitie, Finntroll, Alestorm, Nordheim. Also bands/songs that sing in a non-english European language would be a plus.

I would recommend Artaius, if you want something a bit different. They play progressive folk metal and the lyrics of one song are in italian.

but maybe Winterstorm? most folk power metal is more Celtic than Scandinavian sounding.

Tyr's sister band Heljareyga sing in Icelandic.

Korpiklanni,

Kalevala [Калевала] note Korpiklaani as one of their influences, and I certainly recognized it when I first got into them, though all I hear is them, now. female vocals, gorgeous, and all in Russian.

Furor Gallico - their song "Curmisagios" sounds like it may as well be a Korpiklaani cover.

Nine Treasures - Chinese Korpiklaani worship, very similar vocals, but in Chinese.

Finntroll,

maybe Svartby? Russian vocals

Alestorm,

Lagerstein and Claim the Throne are kinda Alestorm worship.
and there's a few pirate metal bands worth looking into: Gwydion, Cave Growl, Tersivel, Vanir, Tengwar, Balagury, Lou Quinse, Mormar

any troll metal, I guess?
Troldhaugen, TrollfesT, FolkenTroll, Nogroth, Myrkvar

will hopefully have some more free time after xmas

Anyone know of any Māori, Pacific Islander or even Aboriginal Australian folk metal at all? I imagine the instruments, beliefs/legends and ways of those cultures could make for some truly interesting and refreshing folk metal, but I've unfortunately not heard of any.

naa, never heard of any. hell, I don't think I've ever seen musical instruments in any Maori musical performance (though apparently such things exist).

I'm trying to get more into folk metal, I already listen to Korpiklaani, Turisas, Finntroll and Alestorm.

I was wondering if there was any more dark and depressing folk metal out there, maybe even a touch progressive too? Anything in German would be a plus.

dunno if you're looking for strictly folk metal, or anything in the folk/viking/pagan spectrum, but here's what comes to mind.

mostly black metal based, but there's a variety of production styles and vocal styles in this selection

I'm looking for some Caribbean influenced folk metal (with steel drums etc) and ideally not lead by death growls.

When it comes to Caribbean influence with clean vox, you are shit outta luck. These are the only ones that I can really think of, but they have death growls.

TrollfesT - Solskinnsmedisin: http://youtu.be/tgaLNd8R0ws (More Cuban influence than anything else)

Equilibrium - Die Affeninsel: http://youtu.be/IBzIPmyPNGY
- Unbesiegt: http://youtu.be/VoVkxfnNPbY

Those are really the closest you are going to get with Carribean

My boner for Tengger Cavalry is pretty well documented, but unfortunately I don't know of many other bands that take the Chinese approach to folk metal other than The Nine Treasures and my recently discovered Shangren. Basically just anything Oriental in general works since I like Whispered plenty, but are there any really notable/excellent bands that take this cultural twist instead of the usual Nordic/Gaelic flavors like most folk metal bands do? I'm an absolute sucker for this style.

So any bands playing Asian folk would do?
Some names on the top of ma mind:
Ego Fall, Gonin-Ish, Gostwind,
Book of Sand, Odious, Amaseffer, Kartikeya

And finally there's more folk bands which don't play asian folk but also not nordic/gaelic either, american folk can get pretty varied for instance:
Amocualli, Tenochtitlan, Ch'aska, Arandu Arakuaa

Thanks! I'll get to checking them, the only name I've ever even heard before is Gonin-Ish.

And based on the links, Ego Fall is pretty crappy, but hey it's a start! I'm sure the rest will be better :p

I finally got around to checking these, and unfortunately the only ones I liked were Gonin-Ish, Odious, and Kartikeya, and that last one barely had any folk at all. So basically nothing was really what I was looking for (I guess Tengger really are just in a class of their own), but I did find a few cool bands as a result, so it's not a waste. Thanks anyway!

There's "Wagakki Band", a Japanese band. They're more of a folk rock band than a folk metal band, but some of their songs ("Ikusa", "Tengaku", and "Senbonzakura") qualify as metal IMO.

Just in case anyone's interested, Macabre Omen -a band I assumed no longer existed- recently released their sophomore, Gods Of War-At War.
Excellent black metal with a some melody and highly recommended for fans of Bathory and Bathory-like bands.

Since this post was ages ago, you may have learned of this band by now, but there is Voodoo Kungfu. Not quite as folky as Tengger Cavalry or Nine Treasures, but still quite cool.

Well, if you like Tengger Cavalry and Nine Treasures, you might try The Last Successor (末裔). Unfortunately, as far as I know, there is only one album of theirs, but this one is truly amazing.

What's the best Enslaved album to a newcomer? or similar/better bands?

Depends what you like, their discography is quite huge and varied. I'd start with Below the Lights personally but check out Frost if you like black/viking. If you're a prog fan, you'll like their modern stuff and their albums like Mardraum and Monumension a lot.

For Enslaved I'd personally start with Axioma (it's my favorite of their albums so I may be partial) and as for similar bands definitely check out Borknagar.

I've only heard RITTIR and thought it was ok, maybe a little too progressive and emotionally bland for my tastes.

Well then Axioma probably won't be your thing, though still give it a whirl because it's a great album and ends with a fucking monster track in Lightening. As for their earlier material I think Blodhemn is pretty stellar.

Sure I'll still check those, thanks.
