Yes, they are great. Saw them a couple of weeks ago and they fulfilled all my expectations. Both Watching From A Distance and The Strength To Dream are must-haves. So there we have the obligatory Warning mention, now onto the rest!! :p

Finally a thread that I can appear to be knowledgeable in.

Here's something that I'm looking for, if anyone can help: Some sort of doom with a sort of, uhh, elegant (yet still satisfying heavy) riffing style, and a really epic feel. Effectively a doom metal album that brings to mind epic fantasy novels but is still satisfyingly heavy. I guess My Dying Bride at their slowest mixed with, say, the epic scope of Thergothon but a bit less ominous and lovecraft-ish.

Doom/Thrash:

Unearthly Trance definetely has its thrashy moments, try The Trident or their latest Electrocution, but I personally thought that one was rather dissapointing. Obviously Lair of the Minotaur is also a must. The Ultimate Destroyer and War Metal Battle Master are good ones.

Perhaps Morgion Cloaked by Ages, Crowned in Earth would suit you. It's elegant, but perhaps not heavy enough. Gallileous has recently released a single through Foreshadow - a sort of teaser for their upcoming debut - that might be worth checking out as well. Both are fairly epic. Morgion perhaps a little more elegant, but Gallileous is definitely much heavier.

EDIT: Are you looking for bands in the same style as MDB and Thergothon? (As in doom death // funeral doom)

Scald and Passage are what you're looking for.

Funeral doom is the same. Don't stress yourself over it.

I hate the name. But okay. It's very slow and heavy, even moreso than the usual second wave band. I generally no longer feel a lot for the aforementioned genre, but there are some that really make a difference and have caught my attention and managed to keep it. Thergothon Stream From The Heavens // Comatose Vigil Not A Gleam Of Hope // Pantheist O Solitude // Until Death Overtakes Me Prelude to Monolith // Nortt are some essential ones.

It's basically very, very slow Death/Doom. The drums and the guitars aren't as 'aggressive' as Death/Doom, the vocals are usually sung in a different way..

You should try these bands: Thergothon, Skepticism, Funeral (first albums), Shape of Despair, Esoteric and Worship for the 'main' bands of the genre.

Thirding Thergothon, seconding Esoteric and add Ahab and Doom:VS to the list.

Thanks for the recs; but I heard Morgion's CBACIE a while ago and it was pretty shite. I'll give Galileous a shot, though. Foreshadow is a solid label.

Also, not necessarily in the same style as Thergothon and MDB, but that would still be ok. I like my doom real slow.

..Funeral doom is where it's at. It's not necessarily slowed down death/doom, often it can just be a particularly depressed take on trad doom metal. I think Thergothon's demo and full length are the best two releases in that genre. Celestiial have a rather excellent album (Desolate North) that's strange, closer to dark ambient really but rather beautiful and what not, with a strange, excellent atmosphere. Otherwise, Ahab and Skepticism are two other good bands that serve as a rather solid introduction to the genre.

I've been looking for anything at all similar to Yearning, and I hope I'm not one of the only people here to have heard them. They're progressive, heavy on the keys, and use mostly clean vocals but are still quite doomy. I haven't heard much of anything like it which is unfortunate because I like their style and they've become one of my favorite bands.

it depends on what you search for. Some bands stick to metal and play in a very slow way, while others add sick samples and stuff to 'enrich' their music.

I always considered the "torture doom" (wormphlegm, senthil etc) to be quite different from funeral doom. The whole concept of funeral doom brings up extremely slow and sad music, which imo is quite different from the more tormented, deliberately extreme styles of the "torture" genre. They just seem to be based on completely different values and aesthetics, I certainly wouldn't call Wormphlegm 'funeralesque' (if that's even a word).

Listen to Virgin Black's "Requiem - Mezzo Forte". Absolutely stunning piece of beautiful, heartfelt symphonic doom.

I would suggest looking into Skepticism and other bands suggested (and also Mournful Congregation) along with them first if you want a rough idea of what funeral doom is. Virgin Black incorporates other genres, but they're still an awesome band, so check them out eventually.
Also, if you like Worship, I'd suggest checking out Consummatum Est, who are funeral doom with a gothic touch. Also try out Asunder.

These guys are indeed pretty good. The album sounds a little amateurish to my ears though, unfortunately.

I'm a big fan of funeral doom and death/doom...

I'd recommend Ataraxie who I coincidently am listening to right now.

Doom is one of my worst known genres. I can't really go with slow riffs and the whole doom persona (which is why black sabbath didn't really click with me as much as other metal bands).

Though I do like ambient a lot, and bands like After Forever (if that helps).
Is there anything in vein of a band with lots of atmosphere, OR possibly really slow emotional solos? Either or would finally fling me into the real of 'doom'.

I know very little of Doom/Funeral Doom. I'm trying to get into the stuff that is heavy, but also has a melancholic feeling to it. Here's some examples of songs I already know that kind of have this sound/feeling.

Thergothon: Elemental
Mournful Congregation: The Epitome of Gods and Men Alike
Elegeion: Beyond Despair

I'm not looking for darker stuff like Wormphlegm or Ahab. Does anyone have any ideas?

I think Shape of Depair is more in that vein of funeral doom. I would have liked to recommend the mandatory Esoteric, but it's almost as dark as it gets, so...

Try Virgin Black. But... Pretty much all Doom has loads of atmosphere. Funeral Doom relies on it.

Edit: I suck at quoting.

Ataraxie aren't Funeral Doom, great band anyway. Their second album should have been released yesterday, and this one is much more leaning towards Funeral Doom than their first.

Same thing for Evoken, they're Death/Doom.

You should try Virgin Black, their last two albums in particular.
Estatic Fear should be a good choice too, the first album is more Doom, while the second one is more Folk or Symphonic or whatever (somewhat similar to Haggard), there are female vocals if that helps.

Heavy Death/Doom with a melancholic feel:
Ataraxie, Evoken, Imindain, Reclusiam and Officium Triste.

Funeral Doom:
Comatose Vigil, Pantheist, Until Death Overtakes Me, Qabr, Worship.

Although I'm no expert on that style of doom, Sleep seems to be pretty close.

I've always thought that Sleep and EW were quite different, but thinking about it there's no real reason to perceive that. I think it's just that EW seem to have more of a dark, gothic-ish overtone, they're more of a bad trip band whereas Sleep are more stonery in a "Dude..... that was.....wow" sorta way.

I would second Kruel's recommendation, though. Get Holy Mountain first; if you're a real dope fiend get Dopesmoker first. Obviously. Lento and Ufomammut did an amazing collab that's somewhere between Neurosis and Electric Wizard, well worth checking out. Get some Ufomammut, while you're at it, great band.

My main rec, though, would be Saturnalia Temple's "Ur". good luck finding it, but it's an excellent slab of slow, super repetitive doom that suggest electric wizard even more stoned then usual. excellent stuff.

I'll try to offer some of my insight into this sub-genre for you.

If you are interested in funeral doom metal, I highly reccomend Thergothon's full-length release, Stream of the Heavens (I believe that's how it's spelled). This release is a classic within the funeral doom genre.

Also, you might wish to look into Mournful Congregation's release, Monad of Creation, as well as Evoken's splendid release, Antithesis of Light.

Mainly, some of the bands you should check out are Thergothon, Mournful Congregation, Evoken, Shape of Despair, and (if you're interested in black metal) Nortt.

I hope this somewhat aids you.

Cheers.
