Melvins fucking rule, especially 'Gluey Porch Treatments' (first album) and 'Bullhead' (third album). Surprised nobody's posted "Boris" - yes, the Japanese band's namesake - yet.

2013 was a solid year for doom in general: Archon, Noothgrush/Coffins split, Windhand - great recommendation for female-fronted doom BTW - Primitive Man, and even the online-only Pendulous EP I happened to download for a buck. Haven't gotten around to the SubRosa record yet but I'll probably dig that one too.

This may not be quite what you were looking for, but "upbeat doom" makes me think of Buzzoven somehow:

Reverend Bizarre I haven't heard much of, but they seem like the kind of band I'd like - I do love Vitus, Trouble, and also "neo-trad" doom like Electric Wizard.

If you have the attention span, though, I would highly recommend Archon's 'Ouroboros Collapsing' for just about any doom or post-metal fan - 4 songs in a little over 45 minutes, but they have an epic churn and flow to them the way Neurosis or Isis songs do, only with a female singer who does both clean and harsh vocals.

Can anyone recommend me either some doom with very high-pitched vocals (like the higher-pitched sections in "Red Monarch" by Graves at Sea or "Anthem About The Breed" by Luna Field [<- this is more the vocals I'm looking for; as high pitched as possible]) or some doom with very low-pitched vocals? As slow and high- / low-pitched as possible, please.

High pitched:
Mourner
Khanate
Trees

Low pitched:
Loss
Catacombs

I know there are way more, but off the top of my head, these are what I could come up with.

Procession- To Reap Heavens Apart has grown on me like crazy recently! Great epic doom, much in the vein of Scald. Highly recommended!

I really liked the title track but the rest of the album isn't as strong unfortunately.

Anyone know of bands that mix doom and metalcore? That's probably the best way to describe what I'm looking for. An example of a song that does this (I haven't been able to find a band that plays this style predominantly) would be Jane Doe by Converge. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YR9Bspqbps

Depends on what you mean by "doom" I suppose, but this German band from the 90's called Acme does sort of a fusion of sludge metal and metalcore/modern hardcore:

May not be doomy enough for what you're asking, but I can't imagine any fan of sludge *or* metalcore disliking them...

Also, I assume plenty of folks on this thread are familiar with YOB out of Portland - they're certainly one of the more notable doom bands of recent years, having put out 6 full-lengths and a couple of EP's/splits. So far I have 'Atma' (2011) and 'The Illusion of Motion' (2004), both of which feature only 4-5 songs with an average 10-15 minute length, though the bludgeoning Sabbathy riffs never really get boring. They're not all that "post-" anything - Scott Kelly cameos notwithstanding - just good old-fashioned, almost absurdly drawn out, epic doom.

Thanks, I liked that track, and I'm definitely going to explore Acme some more, but what I'm looking for is more a straight mix of metalcore (hardcore is also fine) and the more melancholic varieties of doom, a la My Dying Bride and such. A mix of clean and harsh vocals would be preferred, as well.

Why not looking into the Post-hardcore camp then? the trio Neurosis-Isis-Cult of Luna might do the trick for you. Other than these obvious seminal ones, there're two interesting crusty doom projects that might also be worth checking out: Morne (first album) and Malachi. Some tracks by Amebix sound quite doomy too.

Try their previous album Of Empires Forlorn because it's basically the same in my book (and awesome).

Then try Atlantean Kodex for a similar mix of doom and power metal. Then try Old Season. Then try Doomsword if you want less power metal.

Just a general recommendation: Solar Halos is some addictive stoner/doom that is worth listening on repeat. Intense and heavy with great vocals.

All doomheads should also check out Pendulous out of L.A. They're slow, but not funeral-dirge slow; heavy, but not death/doom heavy; and sorrowful, but not MDB-level sad.

The new Grand Magus is legit as fuck! The hard rock influences of the last one are pretty much gone this time around, heavy and catchy as fuck!

Indeed, it's pretty good. Maybe a bit better than The Hunt. Dominator is a sick track.

Sample some Zaum, why don't ya? The band calls their music "Middle Eastern Mantra Doom" and can be recommended to fans of Om, Bong, and The Wounded Kings. Dark, heavy and psychedelic.

Yep. Triumph and Power kicks major ass. Pretty much straight ahead heavy metal but I'm kind of getting sick of people exaggerating on this Manowar influence.

I've been listening to a lot of Goatsblood and Soilent Green lately and I really like the mixture of Sludge with Grindcore(Goatsblood) and Sludge with Death Metal (Soilent Green) Do you have any other band in mind that mixes sludge with death, black or any other genre?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe look into the band Leechmilk. I have always thought of them as being a bit more grindy than your average sludge band and while they're not that similar at all, something about the general atmosphere they create has always made me think of Goatsblood.

Lurk are listed as death/doom but I think they've definitely got a sludgy quality about them:

Flesspress are like blackened sludge:

What are some stoner metal bands with female vocals?
Preferably clean, but if it's good harsh then it's also ok.

Here ya go!
Awesome female fronted American doom/stoner, Lori is both the singer and guitarist.

Om/EW Norwegian goodness.

Buried vocals but still a woman!

British cool doom/stoner with clean and good female vocals

There's also Rituals of the Oak and Second Grave but they're mainly doom metal even though they have some stoner elements.

Thanks guys. I liked High Priest of Saturn and Solar Halos the most. Probably because they seem to have some more "heavy" riffs. (Probably this is a sludge influence?)

Nah, HPoS are nowhere near sludge, perhaps the only band I posted without any single sludge elements!

Oh, this is very good too, cool psych doom/stoner with awesome female vocals.

I'm also looking for doom/sludge in the vein of Toadliquor/Khanate. For some reason I couldn't edit my previous post.

So what do you guys think of the epic doom band Crypt Sermon? More than decent Candlemass/Solitude Aeturnus adoration, and I like how desperate the singer's voice sounds. Surely he does his best to imitate Johan Längquist and Robert Lowe, but he reminds me more of the unknown Bry Outlaw (Monolith Cult, The Dead Resurrected, etc.), which is A-okay in my book. The opening track "Temple Doors" is a scorcher and will get the party started.

High Priest of Saturn, Horse Latitudes, and Zaum all have similarities and are good bands. Zaum's debut album is not out yet, though. The similar artist tab on Om's page is pretty good so take a look at that too for more names.
