Unearthly Trance is a band I am obviously already familiar with, thanks nevertheless. Sink is great.

Countless bands are similar to them. Basically you're looking for some unabashed Sabbath worship.

Spoiler: show

I was finally able to muster both the time and the will to properly listen to some of the recs I was given (and enjoyed) a while ago. Like... half a year ago... I know I know, but I'm kind of slow on these things, and this is the doom thread right?! :p

So, The God Behind The God is a really great album. It's not top of the line Rev Biz material, but I'll be damned if it doesn't come in on a close second. I really enjoy the riffs and Albert's partake in it really gives it another dimension. Which then leads me to asking, is the other vocalist who recorded the first couple of albums on par with him? Or better put, are those two albums nearly as good as this one is? What do you guys think?

The other one I finally devoted some time was Orodruin, and while it doesn't strike me as immediately and as forcefully as the former it does come out as a solid album. The vocalist is alright, the hammond integration (it's a hammond ins't it?!) is cool and the album grooves on very nicely.

Thanks for these recs Tony, as I believe it was you who pointed me in this direction. Now to spend some more money...

Haha well yeah, I'm sorta of a doom metal purist in that sense. But I also listen to bands along the lines of Kyuss, Om, Stoned Jesus and Sleep.

I've been looking for bands that sound similar to Horn of the Rhino, more specifically to their sound on Weight of Coronation. Something sludgy and doomy without hardcore screaming, but still with harsh vocals, massive tone from the guitars and basses, slow drums and all that good stuff. Thanks in advance :p

Eagle Twin. They don't have the faster thrash or death metal influence of HotR instead they're more slower drone oriented.

Kongh

Cough

Burning Witch

Atriarch. If the deathrock/ritual ambient influence is ok for you.

I was gonna post the same link on the board but it's only fitting that you did it. Killer track and it's without a doubt meeting expectations.

Fucking incredible. Sounds as badass as the artwork Metantoine posted last month. Great balance between fast, mid-paced and slow riffing and the vocals are apt as well, not overtly epic sounding. Only thing I disliked about this band so far is their FB description: "Founded on the principles of unwavering epic doom metal, CRYPT SERMON exists to drive out the current trends choking the scene: fashions and beards.". It's quite ludicrous as I've noticed a couple of the members are also in several sludge bands and they have beards as well. Nothing wrong with sludge and beards I guess. :-P

Yea, it's quite alright I guess apart from that Deep Purple inclusion (same reaction as yours). I would've swapped it with Cough's excellent sophomore Ritual Abuse or Blood Farmers' cult self-titled debut. And why is there no World Coming Down? which is in fact TON's doomiest.

9. Thergothon - Stream from the Heavens (1994)
8. Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (2000)
7. Pentagram - Relentless (1993)
6. Paradise Lost - Gothic (1991)
5. Trouble - Psalm 9 (1984)
4. Black Sabbath - Master of Reality (1971)
3. Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium (1991)
2. Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallus (1986)
1. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (1970)

I expected some flaws and glaring omissions and questionable inclusions, but... Deep Purple?

Yeah, not only is Deep Purple's inclusion stupid, but it's not even the right Deep Purple album. Just from that era, In Rock would have been significantly closer to Doom than Machine Head.

As for the list, I find it quite bad but then, I'm not into sludge/death/Stoner doom at all.

^ Nah, In Rock is just good ol' heavy blues rock to me. They could've included Jacula's In Cauda Semper Stat Venenum.

Listen to this. It's from 1969!

You said "significantly closer to doom". In that sense Budgie's debut is even closer so In Rock shouldn't be an excuse for the inclusion of Deep Purple either.

Burning Witch and Thorr's Hammer are there. I would've been completely satisfied if they included Goatsnake's Flower of Disease as well. Those material are far better than Stephen and Greg's noodling with Sunn O))). As I've said the list is quite legit. I don't have much to complain besides that Deep Purple inclusion and October Rust could've been swapped for World Coming Down as it's TON's doomiest.

Hence why I said Deep Purple's inclusion was stupid ? ;)

Those material are more varied, doesn't mean they are better. At least one Sunn O))) album should've been there because are perhaps the most prolific drone doom act. Inclusion of Deep Purple is indeed stupid and World Coming Down is definitely Type O Negative's only doom metal album so it should've been there instead of October Rust.

Do you mean one of the Sunn O))) albums or the Melvins' Lysol?

^ Not to mention Sunn O))) covered that and renamed it as "Rabbits' Revenge" on their debut.

Nope. They had doom layered within every single album since the early Carnivore styled doom/hardcore/thrash hybrid of Slow, Deep and Hard (Prelude to Agony, Xero Tolerance). Even though October Rust is their most delicate ambient oriented since Pete was listening to a lot of Lycia at that time it still has gloomy droning doom riffs meshed with gothic rock/ambient atmospherics. But as I've said WCD is their doomiest.

Dead Again is also pretty damn doomy.

This Decibel list is meh since So Long Suckers is not #1 :oh shit: But yeah, I wouldn't put Trouble or Paradise Lost in the top 10 and they fucking included Pallbearer so I hate them!!!!!

:-D

Mourning Beloveth and Novembers Doom have made a few ace death/doom records. One each could've been included imho. The Pale Haunt Departure and Dust being the obvious ones.

Sunn O))) cover is awesome. I feel Null Null Void should've been on the top 100.

I meant World Coming Down is their only pure doom album. Other albums obviously have doom influences but World Coming Down is doom from start to finish.

Have you heard the original by the Melvins, the one I posted? The cover by Sunn O))) is decent but far inferior to the original mostly because it lacks the heaviness of the Melvins as the ambient aspect is more emphasized as well as there are no creepy drugged out whisper like chants of King Buzzo/Joe Preston.

Melvins song is heavier but I don't feel the atmosphere as much here. It doesn't have that detached surrealistic apathetic feeling of Sunn O))) despite the chants. Melvins song is just crushing. I listen to stuff that is more on the relaxing side

Relaxing huh! That reminds me Melvins have released the most relaxing song of this year! What a band!

The doom metal list is virtually useless for anyone with a deep understanding of the genre. Yes, I'm mostly speaking of myself. I'm glad to see some genuine doom classics on the list (Revelation warms my heart) but also lots of weird shit I'd never even consider doom metal, including Deep Purple. And why does Pallbearer have two albums on the list? Boggles the mind. One day I will have to make a list of my own. No sludge, vintage rock, drone, stoner, etc. is unaccepted. Also way less US/UK stuff. The world of doom metal is larger than that.

Where is the next great doom release anyway? Still waiting for Mansion - Uncreation. Should be their heaviest recording yet. And I wonder when Wardenclyffe's debut album drops. That should be a treat for all The Doomsday Cult/Giftegård fans.

C'mon man. We all know that lists are biased to some extent. Everyone would include most of the favourites of their own but generally some of the unanimous classics would end up eventually. I also think that Foundations of Burden shouldn't be on that list. It feels a bit biased at least I wouldn't include it even though I like it a lot. But I'd give a nod to Sorrow and Extinction as it's one of the most profound debuts I've heard by a post-2k doom band (purists may not consider them doom or post-doom whatever) at least to my ears. I don't know about anyone else. I'd be biased towards AiC's Tripod album because I consider it a doom-rock record with enough metal riffing going on. Even Ahab's last output The Giant had elements of that particular record. Unconventional approaches don't necessarily mean it's not doom metal, the overall atmosphere is more important to me. Basically, we have the idea of early doom/trad doom (ultra heavy blues driven riffing, hard rock based vocals like Sabbath, Pentagram, Trouble etc.), a more eerie narcotized approach to the former (Saint Vitus, Blood Farmers, Paul Chain or the new ones like The Wounded Kings), a more theatrical epic approach (Candlemass, Count Raven, Solitude Aeturnus etc.), bands that decided to push the envelope a bit further by becoming heavier and distinctive (Rev Biz, Cathedral etc.), bands employing Celtic Frost approach (Dream Death, Winter etc.), bands with a death metal foreground (Autopsy, Asphyx etc.), bands with a death metal background (My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost eventually injecting some The Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division alongwith their US peers Type O Negative who came from a more hardcore/thrash background), bands with a more dense, grim and slower approach to death/doom (Thergothon, Skepticism, Mournful Congregation etc.) and then you have the California stoner/desert scene (Sleep, Neurosis, Acid King, Kyuss etc.) and Electric Wizard, the NOLA hardcore/doom scene and some bands from the Seattle scene that are connected to doom especially the early Black Sabbath styled riffing (Melvins who are basically the progenitors of the aforementioned NOLA scene as well as drone/doom, AiC employs Sabbathian riffs as well as bluesy mournful leads and Soundgarden's early heavy, doomy, psychedelic soundscape which is remarkably similar to Sabbath, Budgie or even the Flower Travellin' Band) even though some people don't acknowledge that with their own lame reasonings. So, yea, that pretty much sums up the preliminary idea of doom metal and its variants from time to time, from place to place.

I've been lurking in this thread for quite a while now and have come away with some great new music to listen to, but there is one band that left the biggest mark on me by far: Acid Bath. The mix of genres, the vocals, the drums, I just love this band. Can anyone recommend a band in the same vein as this one?

Closest band to Acid Bath in terms of versatility is Alice in Chains. Especially the self-titled/Tripod album. Great balance of doomy/sludgy riffing, folk and death-country laden acoustic textures, bluesy leads, psychedelic atmosphere, mournful yet eerie vocals and vocal harmonies. Iron Monkey isn't half as versatile as Acid Bath and doesn't contain clean vocals. Their pace is similar to Eyehategod and the vocals are bad, full of shitty metalcore-ish screams.

You can also check out Abdullah. They're quite underrated.

Could be that my mind is failing me but did we - the few esteemed colleagues of doom rec central - ever discuss Epitaph, the post-Black Hole doom band? I feel like it hastily slipped through the cracks and into some moldy, earthen grave. But why? A show of hands if you listened to it! The debut album "Crawling Out of the Crypt" is a solid contribution to the ever expanding and improving Italian doom scene. The further and depeper you dig, the more you gems you find. In Epitaph's case they still bring the thunder despite nearing an advanced age. Hmm, just like Eric Wagner, when he's not forced to play The Skull's original material. That album had promise but let me down. Not completely, but eh. Fortunately, Wagner is still showing a fair amount of inspiration when playing with his other project, Blackfinger... Right, I was talking about Eiptah, and not Wagner. Check out "Crawling Out of the Crypt" if you enjoy stuff like Black Hole (1st album), Black Oath, Hands of Orlac (I dig the 2nd album), Thunderstorm (Ita) and whatnot. And the eternal specter of Candmass still shines through. Can't lie and say that the album is a mandatory purchase but it's still very good. Damn, as someone who is already convinced, I have to purchase a CD soon. Damn December and Christmas season. Ordering stuff in December is a crapshoot. Will I get the items or not? Parcels have been "misplaced" (stolen) before.

Here's a song, kind of rawer than the finished release, but enjoy it as much as you can, doom friends.

P.S. Fuck digipaks.

^ Very good progressive doom. After all Italians are adept at blending progressive and doom. And speaking of vintage Italian doom I can't find Run After To's compilation anywhere, not even in the record store I keep on checkin' for obscure imported stuff. I picked up The Shining Darkness by Sancta Sanctorum the other day mostly because of the cheesy yet awesome looking psychedelic cover art. It's a fantastic record as well. Synth-driven, psychedelic, spine-chilling doom with a modern edged production despite their retro looking pictures. And I loved Steve Sylvester's charismatic Alice Cooper-esque vocals which insisted me to check out some of the older Death SS stuff as well. Can't believe I was ignoring his stuff solely because of the shock factor apparels.

Aye, Sancta Sanctorum is a fine band. Bought the album and later the EP, even though the latter seemed pointless, looking at the track listing. I actually prefer Sancta Sanctorum and Steve's solo project over Death SS, even if some of their older stuff is okay. Never heard W.O.G.U.E. though. Does anyone know anything about that band? Like how it sounds or whatever. The genre "Dark Rock" isn't very helpful. Could be cool, could be utter bollocks. Have you ever listened to L'Impero delle Ombre yet? Brilliant doom band with prog influences. Highly recommended but shamefully overlooked.

Run After To rules too! I was damn happy when the release date was announced. Another mandatory purchase. Alright now! Always fun to discuss Italian doom.

Time for my periodically-repeated request: any recent doom that worships at the altar of "Forest of Equilibrium"-era Cathedral? I don't follow developments in the doom scene, largely because I'm ultra-fussy and most of it disappoints me by being too far into stoner, sludge or epic territories. Pilgrim's "Misery Wizard" and Black Magician's "Nature is the Devil's Church" were the most recent things to take my fancy, so what have I missed since then?

Decibel's list could've included Orchid's Capricorn (2011)

Or the Graviators' Motherload (2014)

But no, they include Deep Purple's Machine Head which isn't even doomy and Down is more southern metal. Also Revelation's Salvation's Answer is from 1991 not 2007. Morons.

^ Try Brainoil and Buzzov*en. You can also check out Primitive Man but they're a bit more morbid.

If you like Melvin-ish freaky humour oriented noise/sludge/punk then you can check out Big Business as well.
