New tune from veteran epic doomsters Sorcerer. Sounds good. The album is out in March through Metal Blade.

"Good" is such an understatement. This is one of the greatest heavy metal songs I've ever heard.

Hyperbole aside, I take it you're a fan of the band? Personally I'm gonna keep my expectations low because it's better to be pleasantly surprised than disappointed. Sorcerer has never been one of my favorites but the s/t is really good. The first half in particular. I welcome their comeback attempt.

Honestly, I never heard them before this song. I am huge Candlemass fan and this is similar with more of a catchy heavy metal vibe. I am not kidding when I say that this is one of the best traditional metal songs I've heard released in the past few years.

Then go listen to the s/t while you wait for the album to drop. I recommend it.

In the 2015 thread, I said this was the album I most expected this year. When I heard this track last night, I felt a wave of happiness envelop me :p

This is classic epic doom done right. I've been hoping for Sorcerer material for a long time. It sounds like they may fill the void left by Candlemass' decline/recording hiatus. That first track is extremely conventional for the genre but hard-hitting and extremely satisfying to me.

I've already made this request before, but I'm pretty sure I didn't get any replies, so I'll try again.

Despite there being a ton of Sabbath-worshipping doom bands out there, I barely know any who utilize a certain early Iommi trademark: high pitched guitar notes in the riffs, not just the leads. Here are some examples of Iommi doing this, with riffs starting at the indicated times:

Behind the Wall of Sleep (0:11; 1:31): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=23Gs_2f-wK0
N.I.B. (0:52; 1:20): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TNKttMFgaf0
Wicked World (0:05; 0:21; 0:59): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=q9_sGE54wo4
Sleeping Village (1:38): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2gNwMKU1m7k
Warning (0:19): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=geLR_0_mLYM
War Pigs (1:30; 1:46): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Nxgtk_3qwXw
Electric Funeral (2:18; 2:26; 2:51): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tsLkL8DTHeg
Rat Salad (0:27): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TiK2rs7Vvjk
Fairies Wear Boots (0:14; 1:16; 5:43): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i8kYrIWu14E
Children of the Grave (0:53): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9rihpED_obk
Lord of This World (2:04): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9Rbk8HRJuFk
Wheels of Confusion (0:00; 6:01; 6:14): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-Qx1vs2NJ6M
Under the Sun (1:10): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OeHYQM6QzrQ

Ok, maybe Warning shouldn't count since it wasn't written by Sabbath, but I still found a zillion examples of this on their first two albums, and some more on their next two. Contrast this with ALL the old school doom bands I can think of that have done this:

Witchfinder General - R.I.P. (0:00; 0:33): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vureUSIc3lY
Pentagram - Evil Seed (0:17): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l1yfL26HkO8
Pentagram - The Diver (0:00): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rBtMySoYh34
Church of Misery - Born to Raise Hell (0:42; 1:47): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xcz0St84GVo
Church of Misery - Badlands (0:32): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rWEKhqHi3dk

These are the only doom bands I can recall that do this, and Church of Misery's Houses of the Unholy is the only album I have found that does this on a consistent basis. Can you guys name me more bands who do this? Ideally, I'd like albums where there is a lot of examples, but if it is only it one song, that's fine too.

Anyone have recommendations for stuff to check out from SLOTH (USA)? I've been listening to their comp CD "Not Our Worst" and was wondering what else was good out of their gigantic discography.

I didn't see the new track posted, so here it is. The third preview of the new Crypt Sermon. The album will be streamed in full on the 17th.

Peruvian folk-doomsters Kranium posted a preview of a song on their up coming second album. Here's the article, with preview clip. Google didn't do a very good job translating, but from what I can tell, the new album is called Uma Tullu and the song previewed is called El Vago del Cementerio. It says they are currently mixing and mastering the album, and it will be released independently.

The clip sounded nice, but not mindblowing. A lot more keyboard/piano then I remember on Testimonios. But I liked it. I'll still probably buy this without downloading first, unless it proves to be too expensive to do so.

On top of noting that many Sabbath-wankery doom bands tend to miss the subtleties of Sabbath's sound, I have to ask— have there ever been any doom metal acts that had a large jazz root? Most stoner/doom metal groups leave it at heavy psychedelic blues, and while that works for some (i.e. Orange Goblin, Orchid, Electric Wizard, Bongzilla), it eventually begins meshing into a big blues fuzzfest.

Then I listen to Wicked World, Sabbra Cadabra, and Fairies Wear Boots and realize that Black Sabbath was more jazz rock than blues rock. It seems as if if a stoner rock band tried adding a bit more swing and freeform jazz to their music, they'd more accurately capture what made Iommi's riffing so special, rather than keeping it limited to Blue Cheer styled ultra-blues with psychedelia added for good measure. While that can go a long way to worshipping Sabbath, it's not quite all the way there.

Have any done so?

The closest one I can get to a "heavy psychedelic jazz/blues rock" band is Radio Moscow, who are admittedly pretty good.

Is Eyes of the Liar by The Gates of Slumber a Cathedral cover? I swear there's a Cathedral song just like this, but I can't remember which one. I looked through Cathedral's full length discography and couldn't find a song called Eyes of the Liar. I clicked the reviews page for TGoS's Conqueror and searched for the word "cathedral" to see if they were mentioned anywhere in either of the reviews. Nothing came up. The Additional Notes tab of Conqueror doesn't say anything about it either. Am I imagining things?

Music - J. McCash, K. Simon, B. Fouts
Lyrics - K. Simon

From the Conqueror booklet: "This song is a bit of an experiment. Some will like it, some will maybe love it, and some will hate it. Jason and I wrote the music one drunken evening. The lyrics are a serious departure for TGoS: they are a personal matter, and thus I leave them for you to wonder about. I think that there is some real passion here on our parts. I hope you enjoy it!"

Jeez, after Manilla Road and Darking, now Crypt Sermon has also leaked !

The album seems very polished but still has a classic doom aura. I'm not done listening but this is very, very good. I especially like Enter the Holy of Holies.

Cool beans. Time to find out it if lives up to my expectations. I deliberately avoided all the preview tracks but the demo is great. Made me a fan of the vocalist. I just hope the band overcomes the usual epic doom cliches with strong songwriting.

I think I found the Cathedral song I was thinking of: The Omega Man. Listening again, they don't sound the same, but they have a similar melody, feeling, and tone. The Cathedral song probably inspired the Gates of Slumber song.

The Gates of Slumber - Eyes of the Liar at 1:02
Cathedral - The Omega Man at 0:37

Though, listening to them yet AGAIN, maybe not. :|

OR, it could've been Fountain of Innocence I was thinking of.

Cathedral - Fountain of Innocence at 0:51
The Gates of Slumber - Eyes of the Liar at 1:02

Still not a copy, but I definitely think Cathedral had an influence on the Gates of Slumber song. Oh well.

Imma have to check out that Crypt Sermon leak. The two songs that were released earlier were quite good.

Is there any fan following for Elder's new album? I listened to a song the other day and it's pretty darn good. It's got a tinge of modern-prog to it but they balance it well. The guitar hooks are catchy as fuck. Check it out here - beholdtheelder.bandcamp.com/album/lore

Could anyone recommend me something incredibly vicious with a psychedelic edge like Acid Bath and Dystopia? Great lyrics would be a bonus.

If anyone here is looking for trad doom from an unexpected part of the world, I can give you Florence + the Doom Machine Inuka from Singapore. Doom (all) over the world. They're partly named after a polar bear, you know. The first release is rough around the edges but shows promise. CD ordered.

Glaswegian psychedelic doom band Pyre of the Earth just released their debut EP. They're a great band and have been doing the rounds on the live circuit for a year or so now. Worth checking out if you're a fan of Jex Thoth, The Devil's Blood and the like. The download is name your price so sling em a couple quid or grab it for free. The choice is yours.

Cool band, I approved them yesterday. Not quite original but the quality was there.

Elder has a new album out and it's fucking awesome so far, very proggy. Worth a look, better than their previous albums for sure.

I finally gave the BotSC debut a listen yesterday and it's as massive as expected (well it's Tad Doyle after all). "Empires of Dust" is a treat for any Tom G. Warrior disciple. "Unnamed" sounds like a paradoxical amalgamation of the Melvins and Immortal. Huh!

Took a while, more than year actually, but Stone Ship's debut album has now been released on limited edition tape and digitally. It's been available for streaming since December 2013 but you can download it for free now. Give it a whirl if you enjoy trad doom with prog/psych influences. And occult lyrics, I guess? Be prepared for long songs, though.

Hi, the death-doom thread is practically dead, so I'm trying here.

I'm looking for melodic goth-death-doom bands with atmosphere in the veins of Swallow The Sun, Katatonia and Saturnus, preferably with some use of violins, and most importantly a very emotional/poignant feel. Death aspects are optional.
Not too slow or perhaps a little faster paced, with a mixture of clean and growled male vocals.
I'm thinking albums like "Discouraged Ones", with a very full sound owing to layered instrumentation, really grief-stricken vocals and somewhat catchy melodies.

Thanks. :D

Looking for stoner rock / metal in the vein of Fu-Manchu or High on Fire.

Am also a fan of High on Fire.

I know of Orange Goblin (and like them), Alabama Thunder Pussy (like them), CoC (good stuff), essentially the obvious comparisons in the category as they relate to Fu-Manchu.

More challenging for me to come up with comparisons to HoF.

Recent bands (2000 & later) are preferred.

Cheers!

Cheers for the rec!

Dune was decent for me, I might like a bit more groove / melody but it was an enjoyable spin!

Solid as usual.

Love the music, would enjoy similar but with less 'epic' vocals (think 'lower pitched'). Any recs?

Sorcerer have put out another track from their upcoming album.

It's called The Gates of Hell and it's.... extremely disappointing. The first track they had made available kicked ass but this is... unlike them.
