This was asked above, but I'll reask to get the recs going again.

I'm looking for death metal with a "rock and roll" sound to it. Metal that focuses more on the groove than the blast, and doesn't go for the chaotic all-over-the-place sound. Six Feet Under, for example.

Vocals are important. I want them to be appropriately dark and evil and whatnot.
I have also tried Entombed, Jungle Rot, and Baphotmet but didn't like the vocals enough to stick to it.

Try Feral. They're super enjoyable death'n'roll shit.

Listen to

Loss
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI7NuYecbdg

Anhedonist
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNW-EvRQd1A

Both are death/doom bands, Loss also has a more funeral doom vibe to them, but if you want depression and death metal, start there.

Ah yeah, it wasn't what I was looking for. I'll check out the whole album though since it's on DDR. Cheers.

The debut, of course! Fantastic album but also a great introduction to the band. They never really abandoned their core sound, even if it did change a good bit over the years. Maybe start with the debut, then the sophomore, then jump straight into some more recent stuff, filling out the middle later? Carnage's Dark Recollections also may as well be included. Technically a different band but I see that album as an important part of the Dismember canon (plus it's fantastic).

Debut/sophomore if you're more into the old school style from the early nineties, Where Ironcrosses Grow if you want something more modern.

PS: Well yeah, Carnage is better than Dismember! :p

Hey Everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've really into Tribulation from Sweden, expecially the last album "The Formulas of Death". Any similar stuff around?

Also been digging Obliteration from Norway a lot, and recommendations for stuff similar to "Nekropsalms"?

Well, for Obliteration, have you heard their brand new album? Just came out and is really fantastic. For something sort of similar, maybe check out Morbus Chron if you haven't already.

As for that new Tribulation album, the first thing it reminded me of was Necrovation's self-titled second album. The band sort of did a similar thing where their debut is much more straightforward death metal, then the sophomore stretches out the track lengths a bit and heaps on a bit more weirdness and vague psychedelia.

Later Hate Eternal doesn't really fit though, they are very blasty but with quite a lot of tempo changes, but check out their album King of All Kings.

Hey all,

I was wondering if people had some (maybe less obvious) rec's of bands like Bolt Thrower, Hail of Bullets, Dismember etc; where the emphasis is big, catchy, chunky riffs with relatively clear production? The HoB's song 'Ordered Eastward' would be a really good example of what I'm enjoying death metal-wise at the moment.

I'm just going by lyrics because there really aren't many death metal bands I know of that have Orthodox Satanism as one of their themes... Not sure if these are what you're after, but I'll give it a shot:

What about Centurian and their 2013 effort Contra Rationem? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON3GKhMcelA
Lyrics are all available on the archives: http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Ce ... nem/360185

Miasma's 1992 albums Changes might also work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkZy6gywfIE
Lyrics: http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Mi ... anges/1064

I can't believe I forgot this, but what about Azarath's album from 2011 - Blasphemers' Maledictions? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFqSqTR1uQc
Lyrics: http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Az ... ons/305598

If you haven't already done so, do an advanced search with lyrical themes of satanism, occult, satan, etc etc and see what comes up as well.

It might be an obvious rec, but try Slugathor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21B8W_yHJHA and Decaying: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaFJdagT7Ac

The similar artist's page for Hail of Bullets will have a bunch of bands that might suit what you're after as well, so check that if you haven't.

I am looking for bands that play old school death metal style, however instead of bands that use deep growls, looking for bands that use higher scream/shrieks that are similar to carcass, later albums by death, screams use by deicide, and vocals similar to stuff by black metal and melodic death bands.

Try Pentacle, the vocals are kinda John Tardy-ish and involve big, belching bellows rather than the standard death growls.

Sadistic Intent is fucking great as well, imagine a raspy David Vincent style, but more towards the first wave black metal kinda thing.

Maybe Obliveon's second album. Their third would better fit the "cyber" description but less the "death/thrash", if you catch my drift.

I really like their first two albums, haven't listened to much of their third though.

I guess what I'm looking for emphasises more on the occult and less on the cyber. Ideally, both should be present at all times, be fast paced, have lots of tremolo riffs(or not) and dive bombs and weak guitar tones and alien sounding guitar parts... etc. I wouldn't think a band with this sound exists before 1990-1995, but anyone's welcome to prove me wrong.

Cybervoid is groovier, more like Meshuggah meets Fear Factory (sort of). It's hard to explain how it sounds exactly but it goes a bit as if Obsolete was meshed with Destroy Erase Improve (sort of).

As for that occult/cyber thing you talk about, I don't think any band like that exists in any period. But anyone who's willing to prove me wrong please do, I'd be very curious to hear such a thing! :nods:

I'm looking for some more melodic death metal with sad and sorrowful, but not too doomy melodies. I tend to prefer more of the newer stuff, so don't mind synths or cleans as long as they're not dominating too much. Perfect examples of what I'm after would be: Insomnium, Mors Principium Est, Tracedawn and (newer) Omnium Gatherum.

I'm also looking for some more brutal and fast paced stuff. Rough double bass comp with according heavy guitars is what I'm after. Perfect example would be the first 30 seconds of this: Mors Subita - The Sermon

Last but not least I would like to add that I'm a newcomer to the whole death metal genre, so feel free to recommend bands to me with a wider scope.

Not very similar but Brute Chant from Latvia have a very weird, borderline avant-garde most of the time, approach to death metal. I found about them recently and it's truly bizarre, albeit more straightforward than Pan.Thy.Monium. And the reason why I recommend them is because they do have a sax here and there. And sometimes it sounds almost like John Zorn! ;)

Guttural Secrete? Try the UK band Scatorgy.

Kraanium and Devourment? Epicardiectomy, Cephalotripsy, Disfigurement of Flesh, Pighead, Gutfed, Gorevent, and Cerebral Incubation.

Disgorge? Liturgy (the one from Tennessee), Brodequin, Defeated Sanity, Condemned, and Wormed.

Hey guys,

For a couple of years, I have been listening to accessible melodic death metal bands with a broad audience like In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. Recently however, I discovered the album “Sinthetic” by Shade Empire and was blown away. To my disappointment the other albums were pretty bad imo, almost to the point that they sound like a totally different band compared to Sinthetic.

So I would appreciate if you could recommend some other bands, similar to early Shade Empire. For reference I like Swedish/Finnish MDM bands, while I usually find the US counterpart bland and repetitive. Thanks

Think I may have one for you, though they also dip their black, putrid toes into both thrash and black - I give you Charon from Germany. This album is death fuckin' metal on steroids, and full on mean, malicious intent.

Charon's awesome. Actually, do you know of any other bands like them? This track is a good reference to the sound I'm after: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9MUCXsPlpA To be even more specific, something similar to the opening riff in particular would be good, but anything that's similar in some fashion would do. I need some more music that's made by people who truly seem to think that they can make music a bludgeoning weapon if they try hard enough.

Does anybody have any death metal that sounds like Job for a Cowboy's last two albums in the riff department? Their material on these albums sounds really distinct to my ears: technical and spazzy, but mixed with a lot of groovy, heavy twangs while retaining a lot of catchiness:

The riffing sounds like a mixture of Maveth and Lago to me, with some elements from progressive death metal in the riffing in addition. Maveth is far darker and more atmospheric, though. Lago's Marianas is quite close, although it's not as fast. You might also want to check out Putrefied Beauty's self-titled demo. I'm just checking it out, and it might fit the request. Groovy parts and fairly unmelodic tremolo leads.

It's really hard to keep a straight face when seeing bands like Despised Icon and Job For A Cowboy on here, because I remember when I was in my early teens and super into hardcore and metalcore, and hearing them and drooling over the pig squeals and breakdowns hahaha! Ah, man...Yeah, if you want something similar to JFAC, you'll probably need to seek out the bands that took the same path of being former metalcore bands gone death metal.
