I'm looking for bands who have an old school death metal sound that have a consistency of craziness. Something like Autopsy's Severed Survival. A band that has a wet, dirty, and filthy atmosphere. Not the type of modern old school bands that just copy entombed and go on their merry way. I'm talking bass driven, Riff savvy, disturbing Death Metal. The kind you never see anymore. The closest that I've seen to it in recent years would be Cretin with their album "Freakery". I'm looking for something like that but with less Grindcore influence, though I certainly won't rule out a death/grind or Grindcore band that fits my criteria. Thanks.

Try Obliteration from Norway, very influenced by Autopsy and with a "different" feel than most retro death.

Undergang's debut album Indhentet af Døden has just the atmosphere and bass driven craziness that I think you're looking for.

Funebrarum's 2009 album 'The Sleep of Morbid Dreams' is fantastic and may also well match what you're after, provided you aren't familiar with them already.

Thanks both of you, I'm really enjoying them all, especially Obliteration.

Im not sure if this fits in here, but im looking for "brutal" death metal bands pre - 1996,stuff more on the side of death than grind, with monster growls,no screams/shriek/piggy stuff,no chaotic structure,no technical wankery, slow to midpaced, just heavy brutal death.

Some i like are Rottrevore,Internal Bleeding,Baphomet/Banished .

Are you familiar with Miasma's Changes? Also, does it have to be pre-96? Because if not I'd recommend Beheaded's debut album as well.

Obscenity - Perversion Mankind (1994)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jak32SR5tk

Prophecy - Foretold... Foreseen (1995)

Gutted - Bleed for Us to Live (1994)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0copFbXKk0

Demonic Sacrifice - Enter the Realm of Pure Darkness (1997)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfA8Da3HiDo

Pyrexia - Sermon of Mockery (1993)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwVulzK019U

Cancer - Death Shall Rise (1991)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tihapp1PdYM

Morpheus Descends - Ritual of Infinity (1991)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aao3B0fZRQc

The bands you listed are NYDM style which has that chunky groove and sometimes called proto-slam. Here are some more you may like. Cancer is a little less brutal and more along the lines of Floridan death and was recorded at Morrisound. One of my favorite albums anyway.

Hell yeah to Obliteration! I keep meaning to pick up 'Black Death Horizon' (either the CD or vinyl) but even in digital form it nearly made my best-of-2013 list.

Some of Baphomet's (I know, I know, already mentioned...) heavy-as-shit breakdowns definitely sound like "proto-slam" to my ears. Also don't forget Dehumanized, Malamor, etc.

Kind of off-topic at the moment, but if anyone here is into the Eastern Bloc death metal bands there's this one I've been blasting for a while, Dehydrated from Slovakia. You can find their Ideas album for dirt cheap all around the web.

So, old school death metal with a big thrash influence and slightly technical edge, not very dissimilar from the Florida scene but with a tad of Pestilence's Spheres thrown in for good measure. Singer sounds like a mix of Van Drunen and Chris Barnes. Yeah, it's a bit samey but it's good stuff, and they sometimes throw some curve balls at you. I could only find a couple of songs on YT, but the album is pretty much in that style.

Yes i know miasma and enjoy "changes" very much, but its not what i was asking for..and well..i dosen't have to be pre-1996 if it fits my my description, but i doubt that,i rarely find enjoyable brutal death after that era.

Oh, but Perpetual Mockery (Beheaded's debut album) is closer to old Cryptopsy/Suffocation, despite being out in 1998. Afterwards their albums tend to be super-clean and modern, but that debut is pure old school.

Repudilation is considered by some to be the first "true" slam band. They might be a little too modern for your tastes, but give 'em a shot.

Here's some random ones, some are more obscure than others. Really there's hundreds of bands that probably fit your criteria.

Disgorged - Thy Hideous Wake (1993)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XNJCQyvX4Y

Rotted - Instinctive Demise (1996)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCIwL_qEvag

Demogoth - Flesh Consumed (1992)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiCjHIYewww

Infernal Torment - Man's True Nature (1994)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQjM1c8_UfE

Doom Formation - Definition of Evil (1995)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osHDPVRT3zU

Dissect - Swallow Swouming Mass (1993)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu_6Auv4uTg

Ulcerous Phlegm - Ulcerous Phlegm (1991) (a bit d-beat/core here but heavy as shit, worth hearing if you enjoy Rottrevore)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biBD8Bpq76w

This last one may be a bit too grindy for your tastes, but it's one hell of an album that deserves more recognition:

Immortal Fate - Beautiful (1993, released in 2000)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f9hbMUJ0eo

This is great stuff, very solid. Definitely an obscure gem.

Hey all I'm looking for some death/doom similar to Hail of Bullets, with that Swedish guitar tone and van Drunen vocal style, but with extremely fast sections, and killer, atmospheric doomy sections as well.

Hits everything in your checklist. Haven't heard the new album yet but this one is a step up from Encirclement which was still pretty good.

Binah's new EP "A Triad of Plagues" and the full-length: "Hallucinating in Resurrecture" is similar, less-so than Decaying but awesome nonetheless.

You could also check out the band Blood Mortized, though I'm not saying they're great. Binah will kick your ass, though. :D

If Binah works and you go a bit further in that direction I would suggest Ataraxy's most recent album.

What's some old school technical death thrash similar to Hellwitch? Must be riff-oriented and released before 2000.

AcidWorm - wow, you couldn't give a better rec even if you wanted! Even the lyrics talk about WWII, he he. My only complaint is that there aren't many tempo changes as I'd like, but it matters little.

Misfit74 - Yes, Binah... I listened their debut a few months ago but somehow I didn't connected the dots. Amazing band. Thanks for remind me.
Already knew about Blood Mortized, and they're not what I'm looking for.

Beneath - The Barren Throne
Mass Infection - For I am Genocide
Eskhaton - Worship Death
Bloodbath - Grand Morbid Funeral
Anthem - Phosphorus
Aborted - The Necrotic Manifesto
Dead Congregation - Promulgation of the Fall
Rude - Soul Recall
Howls of Ebb - Vigils of the Third Eye
Question - Doomed Passages
Drowned - Idola Specus
Vallenfyre - Splinters
Corpsessed - Abysmal Thresholds
Mordbrand - Imago
Bokluk - Taphonomy

Those are some 2014 releases to check out. The first 6 are more along the lines of what you are looking for from the sounds of it. Obituary also has a new album out you may like, although I found it rather bland and will stick to their early stuff like Cause of Death. All of that should be on youtube.

Add to those Aborted Fetus, Goretrade, Hour of Penance, Hideous Divinity, Swallowed, Horrendous. I know there's a lot of good DM I've missed out on this year, partly because I've been so focused on doom/sludge metal and (more recently) black metal.

P.S. Thanks for reminding me I still need to pick up Dead Congregation and Rude. The latter are from Oakland, CA which is practically right next to me.

HYPOCRISY - Adjusting the Sun (live): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYWRJZnNjFo
HYPOCRISY - Valley Of The Damned (live) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNlZJFcn4VM
Hypocrisy - Fusion Programmed (live): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY42hghXHm4
At the Gates - The Swarm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAPTxBHipRI

I don't like bands soundong like this:

In Flames Embody the invisible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV3t5VN1m5A

Immortal Souls from Finland are a melodic death band I just heard for the first time tonight. They do have a bit of the Hypocrisy/later Carcass vibe (more the former than the latter IMO) and definitely don't sound like 'Colony'/'Clayman' IF.

Thanks.

Bumping this to bring to your attention the rather awesome (deranged as well) Verminous. Behold!

Of Evil Blood
Grotesque Visions

Enjoy.

does anyone know of any bands that start off as regular death metal and then have a break into something completely different halfway through their songs, something progressive or melodic.
Something like these

So I've been getting into OSDM more and more lately and although I'm familiar with a bunch of bands that have put out albums in recent years, such as Dead Congregation, Incantation, Disma, Ataraxy, etc., but there are tons of bands and good albums I simply haven't discovered, yet.

I'm looking primarily for: music in the vein of Bloodbath, Puteraeon, and Binah. I know of Entombed, Asphyx, GSBC, and Slugathor, to name a few. Yes, I love the HM-2/Swedeath sounds, which when full in the mix there's nothing like it. The main thing is good guitar work and it being fully present in the mix. Doesn't have to be only that sound in your rec's, but an OSDM version of Hail Of Bullets could make me crap in my pants. :D
