Speaking of Epicardiectomy, anybody remember that unintentionally hilarious YouTube video of them performing (for a rather negligible crowd) at some metal festival or other? "Show me CEER-cle pit!"

Komoon! urrurrurrurr burrburrburrbuur Show me circle pit, show me, show me!

The vocals sound like a pitch-shifted Donald Duck. The audience is hilarious though!

I'm sure you're aware of these guys, but their Redemption album has a similar tone to that Immolation track you posted, though this is slightly more... brutal in delivery.

40 Seconds Bloodbath
The Voyage

Gonna mention Coffin Lust here as well, though it may well verge on being too harsh.

Necrotic Lust

While we're in Australia, I'll mention Cemetery Urn too.

Bloodied Death Curse

Brazil's Rebaelliun while being utterly fucking crushing, have a somewhat warm(ish) tone

... And The Immortals Shall Rise
Hell's Decree

Italy's Voids Of Vomit also utilise a warm tone, though it's also quite corrosive

Cursed Void
Graveless Epitaph

Poland's Doombringer are worth a look too, though it crosses into black territory slightly (might be a little to harsh also)

Seven Evil Spirits

Bout all I got for now. It's late, gotta work in the morning...

Good call on Vomitory, that's definitely right. Many Swedish death metal bands really sought a warm tone as opposed to cold and scooped. They didn't always have the best gear, but they knew how to equalise a guitar amp.

Coffin Lust is pretty trebley and grindy, so it's not quite as warm as I'd like. Cemetery Urn though, that's definitely there. Voids of Vomit has a very nice Blessed Are The Sick vibe, and yeah, the tone is definitely warm and bassy. Doombringer is interesting too, but the mix is a little garbled so the guitars don't quite stand out.

Thanks for the recs! :)

Yeah, good band and good guitar tone.

The warmest guitar tones are actually most often ones with lots of bass in the mix:

Check out Howls of Ebb, they're coming out with their debut right about now, there are only two songs up on youtube so far, but very promising stuff. Not as atmospheric as the stuff you mention, but cool and very fucked up shit. Maybe take a look at Molested - Blod Draum, which, to me, sounds like what Portal would've sounded like if they played grindy death metal in 95. Great album!

Molested is another band whose releases seem unfortunately difficult to track down. Though I'm sure the "eek"-worthy name doesn't help. :-P

Speaking of Vomitory, is 'Raped in Their Own Blood' (the debut) worth tracking down, and maybe paying a bit of coin (say $20-25) for?

had to resort to a torrent with the remastered reissue of Molested. the tracks from the album suggested and the ep tracks from Stormvold are great. exceptional recommendation.

Yes. Yes it certainly is. How could you say no to an album that has tracks like Nervegasclouds, and the title track alone?!

I know this is probably a "duh!" to some folks but I was just thinking about the rather glaringly obvious D-beat influences in a lot of death metal, particularly the early-90's Swedish variety. Listening to Desultory's 'Into Eternity' from '93, the British/Swedish hardcore lineage of the music is pretty difficult not to hear.

At the same time I've been slowly building a list of bands who play some sort of death/crust hybrid - Vastum, Sanctum, Putrefaction (Ire), Acephalix, War Master, Nux Vomica, and of course Bolt Thrower, the band that arguably invented that sub-(sub?)-genre.

If you're enjoying jams of that nature I'd highly recommend checking out the following crusty death metalers

Casket - http://casketcrushes.bandcamp.com/album/s-t-7

Tombstalker - http://tombstalker.bandcamp.com/album/tombstalker

I completely bypass the whole Bolt Thrower/crust connection. I don't listen to Bolt Thrower because of some punk influence in their earliest stuff. I listen to it because of the war theme and lyrics.

Perhaps, some Mammoth Grinder could fall in familiar territory of crusty/hardcore influenced death metal?

ok so that Molested recommendation sent me back to my Demilich and Disembowelment records with gusto. i'm looking for more older death metal that have a unique atmosphere or style akin to Molested - Blod-draum, Demilich - Nespithe & Disembowelment - Transcendence into the Peripheral.

already very much aware and a fan of older bands like Morbid Angel, Immolation, Demigod, ect.

just looking for more old school death metal records that had something unique that makes the records stand out in their own special way.

Take a look at

Mangled Torsos - Drawings of the Dead
Miasma - Changes
Adramelech - Psychostasia (though I huess you know this one already being a Demilich and Demigod fan and all)
Catacomb - In the Maze of Kadath (demo version, it has two more songs than the EP of the same name)

I'd also check the similar artist feature with all of those bands. I'd be surprised if all 3 of these are not listed.

I swear I'm not trying to do some shameless self-promo here but the link in my sig, I think that sorta has the guitar tone you seek. Since you enjoy Vomitory anyway, there's even a cover of The Voyage on it.

Well, you're not wrong, I think that's a pretty badass guitar tone! Much better than the scratchy, cold, scooped-sounding stuff that many bands inexplicably prefer.

I think the super-scooped tone can be made to work, but only in certain selected contexts. Like, when you want a super-tight punchy kinda chugging ala Cowboys From Hell. And if you don't at least double track the guitars you run a big risk of sounding weak and thin instead IMO.

Am also seeking recs for anything in the vein of the first 2 Hail Of Bullets, sans the already obvious ones please :)

God Dethroned - Passiondale
God Dethroned - Under the Sign of the Iron Cross
Engore - 50 Megatons of Armoured Steel
Engore - Their Names Liveth Evermore
WarCall - Blood, Guts and Dirt

I'm sticking with the narrative war theme. To me, that's what really makes the 3 HoB albums a cohesive expereince along with the great music.

Only going to recommend a few really essential bands as I could ramble for a while. I reckon you want to check out Adversarial post-haste if you haven't already. The Incantation and Morbid Angel influences are there, but presented via really filthy Canadian black/death metal. I'm surprised you haven't come across them and countrymen Antediluvian, but both these awesome bands each have three of their best songs on a world-devouring split LP from 2012.
From side A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1fG__kl_Sc
From side B: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV2VLKQa-6A

Paroxsihzem is another Canadian band that would likely appeal as well. Great, great sound on this one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoU8H4Sqpc8

You've also got Ruin Lust, who unfortunately seem to have split up after only one, excellent full-length, though their demo is well worth tracking down.
Cannot hear this song enough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99ucxlTydWk

Also, can't see how you could go wrong with Australians Ignivomous, who have two albums and one compilation available of dirty, blasting death metal that some of Mitochondrion's faster parts might have prepared you for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gsPRykEFgM

And while at it, why not check out Katechon and Sulphurous, both pretty killer bands, both of whom have demos uploaded on Bandcamp for free:
http://katechon.bandcamp.com/album/tape-2012
http://sulphurous.bandcamp.com/

Also, good tips from AcidWorm too, +1.

To add a few to those already listed:

Hellvetron: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBxNG0D-zcg
Pure ritual black magic

Temple Nightside: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ48j6jqu00
More smokey, nasty, reverb drenched goodness

Vassafor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aplGBhfxlO8
Will never stop recommending these guys or this album. I love the ritualistic tendencies

I just love ritualistic, atmospheric Death Metal in general. I'd love to see a Grave Upheaval, Vassafor, Temple Nightside and Hellvetron split.

Yes. Vassafor and Temple Nightside on a split together would be brilliant, especially if it was material made with conceptual cohesion like Initiated in Impiety as Mysteries. There is an Adversarial/ Imposer split approaching from Vault of Dried Bones I've been anticipating for some time (particularly since I have owned the artwork for it as a shirt for over a year now).

Glad you pitched in with some recs as I saw your very good post in the Black Metal Help Thread as well. Shame there's no "bestial help thread" here... though your RYM and Curse of the Great White Elephant pretty much negates the need for such, I suppose!

Just gonna leave this rather excellent band here for you people to check out...

This is Domains from Spain (lots of good to great death metal coming from there lately...), and from the Sinister Ceremonies album which I have just acquired. Fans of Mortem, The Chasm etc should do well to give 'em a chance. Great stuff!!

I want to hear some progressive swedeath that isn't progressive. Let me explain. It may sound stupid but, sometimes I have some dreams where I'm listening DM. A few days ago, in my dream, I was listening to a song that was bordering between prog and standard DM; with very unique progressive elements. What I want to know is: this song exist in real life or only when I'm high?

Try Crypt Of Kerberos, although it is progressive! :p

Do you happen to know Nocturnus by any chance? The Key isn't progressive per se, although it has a progressive edge so to speak. And it's like Altars Of Madness when it comes to terms with brutality and speed.

Hey guys I haven't posted on MA in a while but I've been around referring to the boards for various things. Despite my 0 post-count I've actually been around MA for kind of a while, I just forgot the login for my old account(s) after so long, so I'm not the noob you may think.

Anyway, irrelevant, probably inconsequential little greeting aside, I was wondering if you could give me any fresh suggestions for an old search of mine. Trample the Weak Hurdle the Dead by Skinless has always been a favorite of mine, the groovy riffing, the production, the tone, the frenzied atmosphere of wanton destruction and brutality... just kickass. It's relentless without getting tiresome... It has something that seems to be pretty rare in death metal, it just hits harder and sounds more brutal to me than a lot of other bands people recommend to me that are considered uber teh br00talz. I listen to a lot of other BDM and the riffs just don't sound as solid and the buildups weaker and the sound overall less crushing.... even Skinless's earlier albums just didn't have it.

Please help me find stuff on par with the fucking brilliance that is Trample the Weak Hurdle the Dead...

EDIT: Oh yea also while I'm in this (kickass) thread, Wastelands by Hacksaw to the Throat is another one I consider to be just on another level (for totally different reasons than TTWHTD of course) and is also a work which I've had trouble finding anything that compares to its brilliance, any suggestions there?

Welcome aboard dude. ;)

May I suggest you check out stuff like Vile, Sepsism, Gorgasm or Gorelust? I have no idea if you know them already but they're all cool BDM bands with enough dynamics and cool riffs that will probably please you.
