I'll start you off with Darth Vader's Church from Florida.

Yes it is Star Wars themed death metal released as far back as 1989. The album is solid stuff too.

Abhorrence- Vulgar Necrolatry

some parts of Imprecation's Theurgia, Obituary's Cause of Death and Accidental Suicide's Deceased.

Any takers on this?

Request - Deicide with the guitar tone of Entombed. Or, more generally, Swedish-sounding death metal with extensive use of layered vocals in the vein of Deicide.

I have some suggestions for dark and atmospheric death metal, though you probably know some of them and some of them might not be exactly what you're looking for, but check out

Catacombs - In the Maze of Kadath
Ascended - Temple of Dark Offerings
Eldritch Horror - Untouched by the Sun
Infester - To the Depths... In Degradation

Any recommendations for technical DM from the 90s, especially from bands located outside of the US?

Cookiemonster16:

Are you familiar with Excruciation from Switzerland? Very underrated band who were playing proto-DM (or really, death/thrash) as early as '84.

Cheap Vodka:

I would definitely recommend Natron from Italy. Pretty technical stuff for the time, and about as brutal as pre-'Bleeding' CC.

For some early 90s tech death metal check out Afflicted - "Prodigal Son" (1992) and Atrocity - "Hallucinations" (1990) - they're from Sweden and Germany respectively.

I'm looking for some recommendations for Brutal/Tech Death. Something that can be purchased online (preferably at Amazon, but elsewhere would be fine too). I've been listening to a lot of Nile (Amongst the Catacombs... and Ithyphallic) and Origin (Antithesis) lately as an example of what I'm looking for. A similar guitar tone to one of those would be a plus as well. I came across Dyscarnate's album Enduring the Massacre and it seems to fit the bill pretty well, but I'm sure there are others. Iniquity's Serenadium album comes close, but lacks the speed of Nile and Origin. Deicide's Legion album has the speed and riff style that I like, but their tone sounds so thin I just can't listen to it for very long. Slugathor also has the brutal aspect, but lacks the speed of I'm looking for. Necrophagist has the technical aspect down, but IMO lacks the brutal elements that Origin and Nile have. I'm sure there are some obvious bands out there that I've missed, so a bit of direction on where to start would be great.

Thanks for the help.

Odious Mortem is exactly what I'm looking for. Never heard of them before, but I'm glad I have now.

I'll have to give Lost Soul a couple more listens. I think what's holding me up on them is that the vocals may be a bit more prominent in the mix than I would like.

I've got two favors to ask:

Most importantly, I'm looking for death metal with atmosphere, feel, and production like Cryptopsy's Blasphemy Made Flesh. Chaotic vocals would help a lot too.

Also I'm looking for anything heavily Lovecraft-inspired. I know Morbid Angel and Shub-Niggurath and just discovered Unaussprechlichen Kulten, just tell me what I don't know that I should know.

Help me out and I'll post more lyrics of mine in the Musicians forum.

Off the top of my head

Catacombs - In the maze of Kadath (very atmospheric shit)

Denial - Catacombs of the Grotesque (brutal and heavy)

Cruciamentum - Convocation of Crawling Chaos (dark as FUCK)

Eldritch Horror - Untouched by the Sun (great old school death)

Nyarlathotep - Slub Lord in Eternal Rest (weird death/doom, awesome, but short EP)

Yogth Sothoth - Abominations of the Nebulah Mortiis (crunchy, heavy)

Anything and everything by them. Just a word of warning though, their releases are rather rare and pricy.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I've only heard *of* most of these. Definitely some good stuff on that list though.

Let me clarify: I need stuff I can actually buy. That rules out Eldritch Horror and Catacombs. I've got Cruciamentum's demo and my eyes are on Denial's album, but I haven't heard about the last two. I'll check them out.

Any more? And also, anything on my first request? The closest I've found that I like is Blood's vocal styling, and Malicious Hate was similar in production. Anything you can suggest me?

Dunno if you already know about them but you could try Sulphur Aeon. Swallowed by the Ocean's Tide got some really good praise.

Ah, I have some more stuff for you to check out. I personally think Sulphur Aeon is boring as shit, but many people like them, so check them out as Erosion of Humanity said.

I guess you know Hate Eternal, but some of their songs are about The Ancient Ones.

Portal of course.

Cosmic Atrophy - Codex Incubo, you should still be able to get the physical album, weird stuff, but pretty cool. Made by a (former?) prominent MA-user.

Chthe'list - Amechth'ntaas'm'rriachth (twisting and dark)

Maybe Illdisposed. Four Depressive Seasons because that's all I've heard from them but maybe some of their other material as well. They're def not as chaotic as Blasphemy Made Flesh but something about that cd is reminiscent of that style.

Pessimist - Cult of the Initiated - I think this will be right up your alley

Plenty of bands play in the vein of Dismember, Entombed, Grave etc. Repugnant isn't too much like Dismember in my opinion as they are more thrashy and violent but definately have an influence.

Tribulation's The Horror is he closest thing to Repugnant I can think of off the top of my head. Like Repugnant it has a strong Swedish sound with some violent German thrashiness and also one of the best death metal albums post 2000. I'd possibly put it as my number 1 death metal album since the oldschool days.

Death Breath, Bastard Priest, and Graveyard (Esp) debut album especially are some more of my favorites of the modern bands in the Swedish style.

Edit: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=87930&hilit=tribulation
Plenty of Swedish recs there. And I see that Authorize was not brought up in that list. Another OSDM Swedish band that released a great album. Was listening to it this morning.

I really don't know their later material well enough to say, but I remember 'Bloodthirst' being a rather good album, with great production.

I'm looking for death metal with dueling vox similar to the styles used in crust. And I don't mean a main singer with someone doing occasional back-ups but two actually singers alternating fairly evenly.

I've been on a brutal death kick, and I'm getting tired of sifting through these ridiculous, overproduced bands with ADD. I'm looking for some raw, unfiltered BDM without showy guitar wankery, stupid samples, pitch-shifted vocals, or triggered drums. Poor production and underwhelming musicianship are perfectly fine (preferred, even). More recent bands would probably make better recommendations because I'm pretty familiar with older stuff. What I'm looking for doesn't have to be strictly "brutal death metal" but it should be at least influenced by the likes of Suffocation, Cryptopsy, etc. To give some point of reference, I've been digging Psychrist, Gorelust, and Embalmer (US).

Yes it is. But if you are looking for those with similar consistency and quality, check out Evisceration Plague, Torture, Gallery of Suicide and Kill in that order.

Abysmal Torment use dual vocalists. Bodysnatch also IIRC

Disentomb - straight up brutal death metal without much technicality, bells and whistles.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25M8pSFU0js

Exhumer - Brutal death that has some grind in there and a fair bit of a catchiness without being slam.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc2swkSO9NQ

Guttural Secrete - Like their first album a lot but not so much the second one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm8fV7WyAeU

Mass Infection - Nice to hear a brutal death band focusing on writing good riffs, yet no technical wankery.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r0V6RjSj30

Unbirth - Lots of blasting, and catchiness. Great album

Relics of Humanity - Didn't like their other album as much but this one is really good. The vocals are more cavernous growls like Incantation than the usual brutal death.

Brutus - Muddy production and more straight up brutal death than all the slam and technical wankery bands.

Usipian's album was 1997 I think and sounds a lot like Suffocation.

Unmerciful is another one that has a big Suffocation influence.
