The two are completely different though. The riffing and atmosphere are completely unlike, even if they resemble each other superficially to some extent. Incantation is utterly grim and desolate compared to Immolation (aside from some uncharacteristically blissful songs like Profanation and especially Once Holy Throne).

If you haven't heard of them try StarGazer - The Scream that Tore the Sky

Chamber of Torture- the logo is very inspired by the old Cannibal Corpse logo and they sound very similar too.

Personally, my favorite is Last One on Earth, but I also really like The Rack. So I would say one of those two. Granted, for the most part, you can't go wrong with Asphyx.

I have that Skinless. Although not a fan to your level, mainly because of the production quality and the tendency to get a little chaotic in places, I do understand what you mean about the brutality. I don't think there's anything heavier than groovy mid-tempo crunchy guitars. That said, some of my favorites in pummeling mid-tempo brutality:

Aeon - Aeon's Black
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZf_cLvZyys

Dawn of Demise - Hate Takes Its Form
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmqSCd7kIik

Ferocity - The Sovereign
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIGH09Er8EA

Thy Final Pain - ... Of Life and Death
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PnvbXxPqIo

Thank you, Ferocity is sick, that's more of what I'm looking for. Interestingly enough, that album's cover features a soldier wearing a gas mask just like Trample the Weak Hurdle the Dead, maybe its just something about that motif haha. Dawn of Demise is great too, thanks.

Yeah, 'Last One' stands out for me, by far, out of all their stuff I've heard. Still one of the heaviest albums ever recorded - the guitar tone is absurdly skull-crushing - and a near-flawless classic of the genre. If not for the relative dullness of some of the slower riffs, I might give it a perfect 100.

The post-reunion albums are fantastic shit, too, especially Deathhammer.

Can anyone who's more familiar with the band tell me how Bodyfarm's debut album fares against the sophomore? Are there any big stylistic differences, is the quality of the riffs/songs/composition better or worse... You know, how is it compared to what came next?

And yeah, I'm trying to be spoon-fed here!

My favourite Asphyx album is probably The Rack. It's not as savage as the reunion albums, and their riffing might be more refined on later albums, but the mournful lead guitar is at its best there, I think.

The sophomore is definitely better. The debut is basically like a European version of Jungle Rot; kind of a hodgepodge of various regional stylistic flavors but sort of the least common denominator of all of those, if that makes any sense. It's simple and pretty dumb, but still enjoyable enough. However on the sophomore, while still having mostly the same approach, they've stepped up their game a fair bit in terms of riffcraft and have a decidedly more pronounced Dutch death metal feel.

It does make sense, and I did read your review of it. ;) I eventually downloaded the debut but only gave it a cursory listen. Seems rather dumber than the sophomore yes, and chuggier as well. Also, nothing stood out when I was listening to it, while the sophomore has a great first half. It's a shame that the second half isn't nearly as good though. They actually slow it down significantly there, but I think that's exactly where they fail because they can't seem to maintain my attention with their slower songs.

I think I may end up buying the sophomore, but as of now the debut is a bit iffy for me.

Pestilence - 'Consuming Impulse' is also essential for anyone who digs Van Drunen's vocals. One of the early classics of the genre, up there with 'Leprosy' and 'Altars of Madness' and all the rest.

androdion, even though the band has yet to release anything I'd describe as being better than "very solid", for some reason I still can't help but smile when I think about the band, if only because they seem so earnest and yet they're so young. Good to see really young guys carrying the death metal torch in the Netherlands, when lately it seems like every good thing to come out of that country's death metal scene is a release by an old band or a new band made up of old dudes. It's great, of course, but those guys aren't gonna be around forever.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm on that boat with you because the Netherlands do seem pretty vacant ever since the nineties, at least in my book. Its death metal scene really deteriorated and withered throughout the past decade and a half or so, and most of the bands that do appear seem to be either really lame or offshoots of better known bands like you say. I agree that it's cool to see someone actually doing something worthwhile in that country. I'd go as far as to say "'bout fucking time!".

Bodyfarm is cool and they do have some potential. I've also noticed that they went up in the labels hierarchy as they're signed to Metal Blade now. I didn't really dismiss the debut entirely, I just thought it was unspectacular at first listen, and even more having heard and appreciated the sophomore a couple of times before that. I still think those two tracks after "The Well Of Decay" pull the album down a bit, but generally speaking it's actually a worthwhile album filled with cools riffs and lost of energy. I don't even mind that most riffs aren't their own, and you must've noticed by now how they do love to pay homage to a few bands. I really dig how they use them though, and in fact one of my favourite parts is when they start playing the rhythm of Unleashed's "Before The Creation Of Time" on one of the songs. But I can spot Death, Hail Of Bullets, Entombed and dare I say a notch of Dissection on one of the songs as well. Like I said, the way they reuse known riffs is pretty cool.

I still need to revaluate the debut though.

Wow, this is pretty great. Contrarian, kinda experimental death metal, very spacey vibe, has their first material out, a 3 song EP out, "Predestined". Leon Macey from Mithras and George Kollias from Nile are aboard, so yeah, quality. I'm just sad it's only a 3 song release, I kinda hate the really short EPs. Anyway, check it out

This request may be posted a lot here, but I didn't find any lately... I'm looking for some OSDM revival bands that doesn't sound like a copycat/tribute band.

I need more death metal in the vein of Divine Eve with barked harsh grunts, pretty down tuned guitars and a nice injection of Celtic Frost influence. Any suggestions?

Quite obvious most likely, but Crimson Relic? Sempiternal Deathreign, Delirium, Mourning?! ;)

@ omnishadow - What "regional" kind of OSDM, more specifically?

I'm familiar with Crimson Relic, Sempiternal Deathreign and Delirium. All not bad bands, but in the end just not that impressive to me somewhat. I'll check Mourning soon. Thanks for that.

I may have a couple for you. Both of these bands have put out material this year, and are both prime examples of some damn fine so called "OSDM revival" (god I hate that catch phrase) death metal. Here we go...

First up from Spain, and I've been playing/pimping this A LOT because it's fucking awesome, is Domains. Their full length Sinister Ceremonies is just one of the best albums to drop so far this year for me. I'll let the tracks speak for themselves

Next up from, of all places is Kever from Israel. Their four track EP Eon Of Cycling Death is a stormer, rife with (death) thrashin' riffs, cavernous all-consuming vocals and killer, heavy as fuck song writing. Check 'em out

Mourning is far from impressive when compared against the other bands though. Have you given Therion's early stuff a spin? Really heavy CF influence there. Or maybe even Dream Death, although it isn't strictly death metal there.

Try Slugathor, Desecresy (their second album), Undergang and especially Ataraxy. All great OSDM revivalist bands with a very strong personality.

Maybe Runemagick's The Supreme Force of Eterenity would be what you're looking for it. It's not aggressive all the time but definitely grandiose to my ears.

I would also recommend Ade from Italy. George Kollias plays behind the kit on their latest album "Spartacus."

Never heard of Bloodboil actually, the others are pretty much well known bands. Though I'd say that none of them is top tier material, even by brutal death standards. What I meant with my remark is that no bands seem to stand out in that country after the nineties. I mean, the post-CF death/doom scene started there, before the "Peaceville Three" made it "a thing"! Then you just need to mention Sinister, Pestilence, Gorefest or Asphyx to have more than enough top tier material in the worldwide panorama. But after the nineties what do you have that actually stands out from the crowd?

I couldn't tell if this had to be strictly Netherlands-based stuff (I know Ataraxy - a great suggestion - isn't) so I'm off the map with some of these.

I'll lean heavy more than doomy with these which all stand out for me in different ways in terms of OSDM / more traditional death or doom/death suggestions: Hail Of Bullets, Pyrexia, Puteraeon, and Aeon. For more doomy stuff perhaps Disma or Sonne Adam.

Don't get me started on BDM recs, lol.

I think you got it wrong. I wasn't requesting bands, and the quote Jimmy made of my previous post was about me stating that the Netherlands have an absence of great bands after the nineties. So although I appreciate the effort we were just discussing death metal this time. ;)

Occult/Legion of the Damned have put out some great Death/Thrash records in their early days but I agree I can´t think of any other bands in the DM scene.

They're decent, but nothing top tier like I've been saying. But then again neither is Bodyfarm, now going back to the original point. I guess that spark was kind of lost in time, although I'll say that Hail Of Bullets deserves to be named amongst the best of the country. Other than them though, and speaking of the last 15 years...
