I'm looking for some solid death metal albums that are consistent in quality, basically. Great guitar solos help, take for instance an album like Once Upon The Cross. I'm looking for some heavy albums, and don't really care about the themes, occult/death stuff is all the better anyway. Onward To Golgotha, solid albums like that that don't go on and on forever, as in not long winded so that I don't have to think about it.

Are you very familiar with Drawn and Quartered? I would suggest anything by them but start with "Hail Infernal Darkness" or "Return of the Black Death."

Far different from each other but here is some of my favorite music that has a lot of mid-paced stuff :

Hail Of Bullets - The Rommel Chronicles. Tons of excellent stuff here and they blend in some nice groovy stuff, esp with the first three songs: Swoop of the Falcon, Pour le Mérite, and DG-7

Katalepsy - Autopsychosis. Technical and brutal, which may or may not meet your request, but there is a ton of mid-paced stuff, particularly on songs like Cold Flesh Citadel, Gore Conspiracy or The Pulse Of Somnambulist

Here's a few more chunky, groovy mid-paced.

Vomitory - Opus Mortis VIII

Necropsy - Deathprayer

Exhumed - Necrocracy

Thy Final Pain - Of Life and Death

Infestdead - Jesusatan (maybe a tad faster than mid-paced, but groovy and chunky nonetheless)

Though Vader are excellent and reasonably prolific, it would be nice to hear some more bands that share some of their (excellent) qualities :

- Extremely groovy catchy riffing that is a firmly old school combination of death and thrash metal without ANY attempts at modern affectations (pseudo-dissonance, core inspired shit like breakdows, modern american DM styled riffing, iron maiden bits, etc)

- Non-atonal note choices.. that is the riffs and chord progressions resolve in a satisfying melodic manner (unlike for example a lot of modern BDM) without pandering to a overtly melodic sensibility like melodic death metal

- Crsytal clear production that does not overwhelm like a lot of modern metal

- Vocals that can be understood without a lyrics sheet (mostly) and have a unique personality instead of generic DM growl 101

- The crazy leads (dive bombing/ smokes and mirrors ala slayer and obituary) alternating with more conventional soloing

- Totally metal / anthemic lyrics

Sorry for maybe overstating the case, but I just wanted to clarify that it does NOT have to be Vader copy (better if it is'nt)and if it matches even 4 of the above mentioned qualities I will check it out for sure. All suggestions will be welcome .

For the person looking for artists similar to Bolt Thrower/Asphyx/Coffins, I highly recommend checking out Claws, War Master, & Serpentine Path. They're all a little different but you can trace those differences back to styles you're interested in:

Claws:

War Master:

Serpentine Path:

Also, as an Asphyx fan, you've probably already dug into Soulburn:

For Vader, try Solstice. They are old-school death-thrash from Florida with many of the characteristics you mentioned but with less of a Euro tone (obviously):

Their newer record is a little less thrash but still good:

Demolition Hammer are a bit more thrash than death, but they still likely satisfy the majority of your requirements. Old school and heavy as shit, with (at least) decent production.

OR
Mangled Torsos (death doom).
SFU's Haunted and Warpath.
Bolt Thrower.
Coffins.
Winter.
Some Runemagick.
Cianide.
Autopsy.

This is a Polish band that I recently discovered that should do the trick for you. They have been around for many years but I only discovered them with their latest output. Lots of heavy, and fast groove/thrash to their sound and tight leadwork with some nice use of solos. Vocals aren't too deep either and you can understand them for the most part.

Some of these may be repeated as I glanced through the responses.

Hail of Bullets (NL) (Strong Bolt Thrower influence, and Asphyx too. Van Drunnen behind the mic who is also the Asphyx front-man so lots of similarities between the bands. Check out Van Drunnen's other projects like Grand Supreme Blood Court too)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-r78Ry3o2w

Burial (NL) (Strong Massacre influence, and Massacre was already mentioned)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lam9IeNjYnY

Decrepitaph (Very heavy, and putrid sounding groove. Reminds me a lot of Rottrevore. Exactly what you described)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC7KHe1dOQw

Baphomet (NY styled death metal tended to have a heavy groove sound)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KYVc6b2PTY

Eciton (Dnk) (These guys sound quite influenced with NYDM with their heavy groove. I wish they would get more attention)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2drY8vwKJ4

Morpheus Descends (More NYDM)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aao3B0fZRQc

Resurrection (NYDM)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DSktz15UYg

Torchure (German death metal that has some groove to their sound)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOn88ijAUAc

Just Before Dawn (Project with an ex-amon Amarth guitarist and uses different musicians for different songs. Along the lines of Bolt Thrower and Hail of Bullets. Very heavy groove)
https://soundcloud.com/sufficiently-stu ... ttery-2014

Decaying (Fin) (More Bolt Thrower and Hail of Bullets worship)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP_Iu2DwIzU

Demonical (There are tons of bands playing in the Swedish style with that heavy d-beat groove. Vomitory, Dismember, Grave, and Bastard Priest to name a few if this is what you want)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sE3o_L_ieEY

PostMortem (German band that has been around for ages but not too many people seem to know about)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZss0MpEoAk

Prophecy (On the more brutal side of the NYDM sound. Full of heavy groove)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gPWi-0h7HQ

I'll assume you know Obituary, but if not then check them out. They have been around since the early days of Floridian death metal and are one of the most popular death metal bands.

Also check out Trauma which I linked above in reference to a similar band to Vader.

Well, I have not read through the whole thread, but after looking through about 30 pages a few really good bands, who might not have been mentioned yet, come to mind.

Anybody who likes Septicflesh should give Waltari's (Fin) - "Yeah! Yeah! Die! Die! - Death Metal Symphony in Deep C" a listen. Waltari is a cross-over band and I can't say that I like most of their other albums. "Release Date" was fine though. "Blood Sample" is also still an album, which might appeal to the more adventurous metal-fans out there. On the other hand, if you actually liked "...Death Metal Symphony...", you could take a look at "Evankeliumi/Evangelicum", but I think you will have to get that as a video.

Also, everything from "zeitgeistermusic.com", a small german label. There are all kinds of bands and most of them are strong on atmosphere, but only a few of them are actually Death Metal. Island for example made two albums and one EP and only their first album "Orakel" is clearly Death Metal. Valborg (Encyclopedia: Progressive Doom/Death) on the other hand still make rather straightforward Death Metal. They often incorporate clean vocals and quite a few melodies and ambient passages. They are easily one of the greatest Death Metal - bands I know. Same for Owl, but their sound is much darker, the songs are longer etc. The Encyclopedia-page describes them as Death/Doom/Ambient.

Hopefully this will be helpful for somebody.

Seconded. I have the Emetic vinyl reissue of 'Bowels of Repugnance' and it's fucking amazing.

1. There are a fair number of bands out there that mix punk and death metal. Apart from death/grind there is also death metal that mixes with crust punk and death metal. Stormcrow and Cancer Spreading being a couple of these if that is what you are looking for. I'll link Death Breath though which is probably the closest to what you want that I can think of.

2. Tin can drums are not too uncommon in brutal death/grind. It's personally a big turn off for me but others like it.

Hi, I'm looking for death metal bands with an old-school sound, you know, rough production, fast tempo and simplistic but crushing riffs, kind of like Cannibal Corpse debut, i've tried a lot of so-called "retro" death metal but a lot of them have very clean productions and lack that "feeling" so to speak.

I already know of Immolation, Baphomet, Rottrevore, Incantation, Morta Skuld, Incantation, God Macabre, etc.

Basically not-so-known death metal bands with a classic sound, the country doesn't matters, thanks in advance.

Basically not-so-known death metal bands with a classic sound, the country doesn't matters, thanks in advance.

try razorback records, as they have tons unknown bands.

Ok,i know im a pain in the ass, butt bear with me guys..

1- Death punk..punkish death metal..does such a sound exist?

2- Where can i find the "garbage can" drums sound? just like in Metallica's st anger but in death metal?

1. Death Breath is pretty close ,and im already hooked..reminds me a lot of Autopsy.
I just found out about Abscess while looking for your rec.

2. I really like the tin can drums, and i was hoping for some pure death metal...but that Last Days of Humanity thing you gave me..NO man..just NO..haha.

Check out Splatterhouse - The House that Dead Built, I recall it having a rather noisy, ringing and tight snare tone. Nowhere near as obnoxious as St. Anger, and in fact, I also find that an appealing element in certain kinds of death metal.

Have you heard of Funebrarum?

Here's another track from Drawn and Quartered.

^ Could you be a little more specific? The death metal bands that started in the 80's don't all sound alike.
