Recommend me some death metal based on my current tastes.

Love:
Death (Human, Symbolic)
Bolt Thrower
Napalm Death (Fear, Emptiness, Despair)
Older In Flames
Amon Amarth

Meh:
Lykathea Aflame
Suffocation
Necrophagist
Napalm Death (Scum)
Death (SBG, Leprosy)
Atheist
Carcass (Heartwork)

I seem to be veering mostly towards Gothenburg and deathgrind.

Interesting. :)

You have absolutely no pattern in likes and dislikes. I foresee random reccos coming your way.

Indeed. That's pretty random. At any rate, regardless of the strength of the list, you would like to be more specific about what kind of death metal you want rather than giving a list of bands you like/dislike.

He did. :P

Sean, try some Blood Duster (deathgrind) and if you want to veer slightly more to grind, try out Insect Warfare's World Extermination. Damn fine grind album if there ever was one!

Ah.... sorry.

I am requesting something along the lines of old school technical/progressive death metal. The most prominent example I can give is Timeghoul, sorry if I am being too vague.

Try Babylon Sad. There's a very good review of their album Kyrie.

I'm looking for some "strange" sounding death metal, a la Demilich, Portal, later era Gorguts.

You'd probably like Atrocity's album Todessehnsucht, then.

Aha, cool.

Aside from that Atrocity album, another odd band is Carbonized, at least on their album Disharmonization.

Adding on to the suggestions already given, you may want to check out Ingurgitating Oblivion and if you haven't already, Invocation (later changed their name to Portal).

No, not at all. Lykathea's vocals are typical guttural death growls (the vocals are the most generic part of the album). It's pretty atmospheric, and overtly oriental-sounding. It's not a dark album by any means, so if you want something evil, avoid it, but otherwise, it's pretty good. Keys are used sparingly.

I don't know, "Heartwork", despite being a Carcass album, is sort of indicative of the Gothenberg sound, too.

Try Eucharist .. a good Swedish band. THe vocals are ratehr At the Gates-ish, but the strength of the melodies is in general higher and there is some interesting doom influence on the "Mirrorworlds" album. Guitars sound far too thin on their first album but it's still a good listen.

Wow, Timeghoul is incredible and there's surely nothing like them. You know Demilich? They're not so similar, but you could definitely investigate them as they are quite inventive and unique. I believe somebody above me already suggested Atrocity, and I second that, especially their second album, which is compositionally out of this world .. maybe most imilar to Timeghoul in some ways, actually, now that I think about it.

Try Siege's Drop Dead, Terrorizer's World Downfall, anything by Extreme Noise Terror, Agathocles, Cripple Bastards and Nasum.

Which era of Septic Flesh do you mean? If it's the classic (first 3 albums), you could do a lot worse than Garden Of Shadows and Depresy.

I assume you know Carcass.

Nasum and Agoraphobic Nosebleed are pretty cool to.

You might like Pig Destroyer to.

Completely random...but so are your tastes. Check out Cemetery Urn...really thrashy, heavy Death Metal. Anyone I gave this rec to has liked it a lot.

I know of Terrorizer already, but I'll check out the other ones.

@666head: I know of both Pig Destroyer and Carcass. And since you both rec'd Nasum, I will certainly give them a listen along with the other recs.

I have yet to hear Atrocity but I am quite familiar with Demilich, one of my favourite death metal bands. Curse this feeble desert internet connection! Will probably have to wait until I am back in a city to check it out.

Haha, it's awesome! I wish they would have done more than those two demos, but man what fucking demos they are!

Anyway as I mentioned earlier (to StryckenFromHistory) you could check out the link in my signature. Largest influence is of course Demilich.

Have you heard Monstrosity's cover of Angel of Death? Not my favorite song of theirs, but that opening scream is just awesome. Also Kataklysm has a new album out which I have yet to thoroughly listen to, though it seems good.

Extreme Napalm Terror - Impulse to Destroy
Nausea - Crimes Against Humanity
Necrophil - Cannibal Sex
Nuclear Death - Bride Of Insect
Population Reduction - At The Throats Of Man Forever
Prophecy Of Doom - Acknowledge the Confusion Master
Repulsion - Horrified
Unseen Terror - Human Error

Maybe you'd like Abscess too.

Indeed, those demos are fucking intense. I think I have already checked out Atrophy back when I was an unregistered lurker on these forums. It was really good from memory, I will recheck it out when I manage to get a faster connection, which will be on 2 or 3 days then get back to you and everybody else who has given recommendations.

Yea, it's great stuff, old school and a bit of dm influence in it. Some of the guys from Insanity are in it too.

Wow you really don't like Lykathea Aflame? Anyhow try some earlier Carcass albums maybe Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious.
