I'm looking for a specific style of guitar playing, really. Death metal that's based on memorable guitar riffs, not just tremolo picking and blast beats. Albums such as Bloodbath's Nightmares Made Flesh, Carcass' Heartwork, early Arch Enemy, At the Gates' Slaughter of the Soul (just ignore the horrible singer, ugh), Death's last two albums, something that would be really influential to a guitar player. Good production preferred, and no shitty singers (like at the gates) please.

infinitenexus, I'm not sure if I understand the necessary distinction between tremolopicking and memorable riffs you imply, since they're hardly mutually exclusive. For example, Aurora Borealis is essentially Kreator-influenced death metal with mostly blast beats and tremolo-picking, and yet quite memorable. Anyhow, have you heard of The Chasm, Adramelech, Intestine Baalism (for incredible lead guitar work), Disharmonic Orchestra, Demigod or Infinitum Obscure?

Later The Chasm, first album only by Adramelech and Demigod, and either of the first two by Disharmonic Orchestra. Since you like At The Gates, you'll probably enjoy every Intestine Baalism album though they have more in common with earlier ATG than SotS. Omnium Gatherum's debut album is incredibly memorable quality melodeath, so check it out too.

No, I meant I wanted bands that weren't doing the tremolo picking and blast beat - style of music. I'm tired of them both, and I'm in the mood for some badass guitar riffs.

You might also enjoy Arghoslent (not the debut though). Some practically worship them for badass riffs, others think they're shite and their riffs are gay, I think they're alright but mostly nothing spectacular (with the very rare moment of exceptional greatness, and some total shit like The Nubian Archer).

I do really appreciate your suggestions, but honestly I hated every band you recommended, lol. A lot of their stuff was just slow and boring, with 1980s sounding production. I see what you mean about Arghoslent and guitar riffs. Definitely guitar-riffy, I just need something, well, better haha. I don't mind some blastbeat/tremolo picking, I'm just tired of bands who seem to do nothing but that. All those albums I listed earlier have their parts like that, but their music is based on badass, memorable guitar riffs. I want to hear a death metal song with guitar riffs as great as carcass' "carnal forge".

What the fuck, guy likes Slaughter of the Soul and hates The Chasm, Intestine Baalism, Adramelech, what the fuck is this. All of them had 80s production and were slow and boring? You didn't listen to any of them, did you.

Sorry man, but your taste is so completely different from mine that I simply can't recommend you anything. Maybe if I recommended you something I hate?

Edit: Try some Czech bands like Opitz, Melancholy Pessimism and Destroying Divinity. Opitz is a bit silly at times (idiotic interlude song etc), but they have awesome moments.

Jesus, don't get upset because I didn't like the bands you recommended. It's okay if we have different tastes, it's just music. I already said I appreciate your suggestions. Let me give some examples:
the chasm. slow, boring. Definitely not modern production. http://youtu.be/qaaTC8XW4qs
the chasm. Slow, boring. Acceptable production. http://youtu.be/z-ij3lLTK-M
the chasm. some decent guitar riffs, but that's about it. Horrible production. http://youtu.be/c43fj53duJU
the chasm. this song actually shows some promise. Production acceptable. http://youtu.be/2woXSsbQPGg
adramelech. decent song, bad production, horrible singing. http://youtu.be/sswPvaFyaYQ
adramelech. same as above http://youtu.be/7zhMxSWwqQQ
adramelech. decent song, horrible production. http://youtu.be/Rpn8FYEMSe8
adramelech. first minute is straight blast beats. I said I'm tired of excessive blast beats. Acceptable production. http://youtu.be/QExlhf6gGIQ
adramelech. this song is half blast beats. see above. http://youtu.be/k7iOgfgnvuU
intestine baalism. shitty production, horrible singing, pretty decent guitar riffing. http://youtu.be/ZIVaugamW_w
intestine baalism. shitty production, horrible singing (even without the tons of reverb), 3.4 of the song is just tremolo picking. I said I'm tired of that. http://youtu.be/PppKmfNDiDk
intestine baalism. shitty production, can't even hear the drums. http://youtu.be/2f6NHFKXdvk
intestine baalism. definitely a SotS sound, nice guitar riff. acceptable production. shitty singing. overall, uninspired. http://youtu.be/_QEvf3OFL0E
intestine baalism. same as above. I guess I could get into this album as long as I ignored the vocals, which is what I do with SotS. http://youtu.be/SXk6aypcVqA
arghoslent. acceptable production, decent guitar riffing, acceptable vocals, just, well, not quite good enough. Almost sounds like death and roll instead of death metal. http://youtu.be/TwGtabMaHO4
arghoslent. shitty production, mediocre vocals, decent guitar riffs. can't stop staring at the horse ass on the album cover.
http://youtu.be/4rYEgFTkMTI
Omnium Gatherum. slow, a bit boring, good production, overall uninspired. could show promise though http://youtu.be/09RI2ndQoyw
omnium gatherum. same as above. nothing memorable about this at all. http://youtu.be/UKpu_e0vHjk
omnium gatherum. production okay other than the levels being higher than metallica's death magnetic, although that might just be youtube making it sound so horrible. Or it might just be the song sucking so badly. it's boring. http://youtu.be/8ybdN0P9wgc

So yes, I did listen to them. I simply didn't like them. Next time instead of getting upset that I don't like your recommendations, maybe pay closer attention to what I was asking for. Good production. NOT full of blastbeats and simultanious tremolo picking. Good singer. Memorable, badass guitar riffs.
for example:
this has good production, and is full of incredible guitar riffs. http://youtu.be/Y7cKViwhHcw
great production. great singing. great guitar playing. not a blast beat in the entire song. http://youtu.be/z-dJBJV_nfI
great production, incredible guitar work. no blast beat/tremolo picking sections. http://youtu.be/kdEPnGUPc5s
great production. great guitar playing. no blast beats. ignorable vocals. http://youtu.be/GHBrmX__tI8
great production. fucking huge guitar riffs. no blast beats. johan's vocals were actually good by this album. http://youtu.be/l1suK_OPH14

More or less recently I started listening to Been Caught Buttering, partly thanks to ANationalAcrobat's review of the album, and holy crap is this awesome! Raw, carnivorous, psychopathic death metal with a rocking edge and quite a bit of early Black Sabbath influence, just like ANA stated. Plus, I love the lyrics, which even though aren't exactly intelligent, are totally endearing in a Brain Dead kinda way. This album is an example to be followed by other bands.

infinitenexus, I may have come across as being upset, but I wasn't, I was half amused and half perplexed. I didn't actually think you didn't listen to them. "You didn't listen to any of them, did you" was my way of saying, "I can't believe you hated that stuff, did you listen to the same thing as I have?" Sorry they weren't your thing; it's just baffling, because stuff like The Chasm and Adramelech are generally very well liked. The second and third Adramelech album aren't even nearly as good as the first, though.

For the record, nothing I recommended had only blast beats. Anyways, you have a horrible taste. I didn't understand completely what you were looking for, probably because Heartwork and SotS don't represent memorable, great riffing to me at all. I probably should've realised that, so I apologise for having wasted your time.

Infinitenexus, I suppose you know of Impaled? Some of the Carcass worship bands BaloroftheEvilEye is looking for may fit your bill.

Ah, okay. Sorry, I thought you were mad, haha. Well as I said earlier, I do appreciate your recommendation. I'll be the first to admit that I'm very picky with my music; it's one of the reasons I listen to so few bands. The horse ass thing - when I was looking at the album cover and saw that, I just couldn't seem to see anything else. Just horse ass. hahahahaha. I like plenty of other DM bands, I'm just in the mood for a certain sound now.

Greetings!
I am in need of recommendations!
I'd like some bands that make some really experimental music, like things unheard before

Another thing, does anyone know of any succesful mating between death metal and blues?
I'm not talking few blues scales and chords, I'm talking full-blown mating :)

Bumping this request:

Looking for more stuff with production superficially similar to None So Vile like Inveracity - Circle Of Perversion. The guitars, snare and bass are very similar, even if NSV production is slightly muddier, messier and just superior in every way. Anyway, similar snare, bass and guitar sounds as on NSV or the Inveracity album please. Style can be any, but especially spastic slam is less desirable.

Check out Swedish Necrony and their 7" and full-length. And then go for the best: their MCD "Necronycism: Distorting The Originals".

I just listened to some Impaled, and Mondo Medicale might fit the bill.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StpxSk8P7i0

Exmortus is like a death metal Dragonforce, but it's more thrashy than outright brutal. Lykathea Aflame has some characteristics in common with brutal death metal, like the occasional slam-esque passage, and their music is abundant in melodies and harmonies, however I'm sure you'll hate it like nothing else in the world.

I've not heard Miseration, but they're called melodic brutal death metal by some people (I think they might be chiefly melodic DM though).

Just checked out Intestine Baalism's Banquet In The Darkness. Good stuff, though the drums are mixed a bit low. Thanks for the rec!

Any chance of anyone knowing some death metal with heavy orchestras that don't completely sound like second-grade shit?

Good examples are Fleshgod's Agony album and SepticFlesh's Communion and Great Mass. More so, I hope, SepticFlesh because even though I love Agony, they are still blossoming in the production fields of orchestral arrangements.

I quite enjoy Ex-Deo in this department but don't go in there expecting the same speed factor as in the bands you mention, they're more like a mid-paced symphonic Kataklysm without blast beats.

Hell... they're exactly that! :D

Hey guys, I'm not a very experienced death metal listener. I have heard a good number of the classics and a few recent ones. The typical modern death metal sound bores me to tears, so I want something a bit unorthodox. For instance I have recently got into some psychedelic death metal bands like Gigan, Mithras and Skeleton of God. Basically looking for anything weird or incorporating non-metal genres.

maybe give some of Cephalic Carnage's earlier works a listen. cause to me I def hear a parallel to Skeleton of God in their earlier work... also helps both were from the same area.

I'm kind of into some technical death metal at the moment and I want more. Hopefully of the modern variety.

Examples: Death's Human, Atheist's first album, The Red Chord's last album, the band Arkaik who've been touring with CC, Cryptopsy's first two, Psycroptic's new record...

Also... are there any bands that play something like Napalm Death's Harmony Corruption era...? (Through 1994, I guess...)

In your opinion what is more precisely the genre (or mix of genres) of The Rotted?

I'm kind of into some technical death metal at the moment and I want more. Hopefully of the modern variety.

Examples: Death's Human, Atheist's first album, The Red Chord's last album, the band Arkaik who've been touring with CC, Cryptopsy's first two, Psycroptic's new record...

Heard of Archspire, they're okay but nothing I'd listen to a lot, didn't like Lost Soul's vocals, and Man Must Die had a weird guitar tone.
