Yeah, talking about your religion is okay as long as you're rather neutral about the subject. Not to mention the fact that most (if not all) preachy bands seem to emphasize their message over good songwriting, resulting in pretty mediocre or even outright awful music.

Yeah dude. Been listening to Sacred Warrior for like four years and they really do have a nice melodic US power sound but fuck their lyrics have always been hilarious. That track 'black metal' is a retarded classic. You've gotta want to be like Jesus.... the Messiiiiiiiiaaaaaah. Yeah fucking bigotry. They're no better than Torn Flesh with their tracks like 'Gay Rights'. lol. There are a few bands that would have been good if they dropped the Christian thing and focused on kicking arse. Scarlet Rayne's another. Fifth Angel, Last Descendents to name a few. Haven.

There was also that Europower band who's debut was all recorded by just one guy, I remember..... The music was rather decent, but the lyrics were overtly saccharine "Jesus loves you!" bullshit. No bigotry though, so I can say there's worse.

Rob Rock is really the only good Christian metal artist I can think of, Garden of Chaos rips pretty hard. Theocracy can go fuck themselves though. ;)

Ah, Theocracy, that was the band! Yeah, their aesthetics are so sugary it makes me wanna puke. I still think the music was somewhat solid, if also kinda bloated.

They're one of those bands a lot of people like but I can't figure out why. The vocals are annoying and the music isn't that special aside from having some very well played guitars...but the way I see it, if we're just praising bands for having good musicianship, that's not very good standards. :p I guess they're more for people who really can't get enough of that sort of modern PM sound, but I dunno, even as a big fan of the style I can't get into Theocracy much.

Speaking of modern PM, not a long time ago I checked out Sonata's Unia, and..... I happen to really, really like it. I don't love the band suddenly or anything, but considering my previous burning hatred for them, I'm really surprised myself. Slowly getting into Reckoning Night too. Tell me Emp, are their more recent records in the vein of Unia, and do you think I should check them out?

Days of Grays and Stones Grow Her Name are kinda like Unia, except they're, you know, good. :V

To me it seems a shame about a lot of these bands. It'd be rad if one band like Scarlet Rayne doe a christian debut, than become born again in reverse, and made an insanely kickass sophomore album, eschewing all the terrible preachy nonsense in favour of more traditional US power lyrical trappings. Surely there has to have been a band somewhere that made that transition? Some really promising bands there that just blew it by running with the whole God-bothering thing.

Stones Grow Her Name is barely metal at all, mostly pop/rock or something, some weird hybrid, but I love it to pieces. Some of the most enjoyable music all year. Pretty much endlessly replayable.

I doubt you would like The Days of Grays though, Xlxlx. Doesn't seem up your alley at all. That one gets really angsty.

Eh, I don't know Zelk. I like Unia's moody atmosphere, and while the riffing isn't really something to be amazed by, I believe it does a great work of pushing the songs forward. Love Kakko's vocal performance on that record too.

Well, the word "angsty" isn't something I really like being related to metal..... But hey, I can still check out a song or two. It wouldn't kill me.

Days of Grays' best tunes are "Deathaura," "Flag in the Ground," "The Last Amazing Grays," "In the Dark," "Juliet," and...everything.

You really need to think harder, then. Especially, when there's bands like Trouble, Warlord and Fifth Angel who also "keep the faith". I mean, Trouble are just one of the best metal acts, hands down, Christian or no. First two albums, especially, but most of their stuff's good.

Ever heard of this little band called Black Sabbath? Or Manilla Road while we're at it. Or Oracle/Prodigy. Or Candlemass. Seriously, pay more attention to the lyrics. Metal probably has more top quality Christian bands than quite a few genre's.

:metal: Yeah, it is indeed a shame about those "white metal" bands. Apostle, Sacred Warrior, Recon, Scarlet Rayne, etc. were all way too preachy, yet pretty good. When it is dialed down it's not bad though (Steel Prophet, Rob Rock, etc.).

@Xanzotire ...and none of those are Christian. (Well, not positive about Prodigy, as I never paid attention to the lyrics). Sure, they all have some Christian themes, but it's generally only of of many perspectives which they embody at some time.

@Xeo: there's definitely a few bands in that area (Skullview, Coven, occasionally MR) but I can't think of anything obscure enough that you don't know about it. Also, none of them have Glen May :metal:

Bands with Christian themes aren't Christian because they don't sing about praising God constantly? That seems like twisted reasoning to me. 'I really wish all these Christian bands would stop singing about Christ', 'Well what about these guys?', 'Don't sing about Christ all the time, ergo, not Christian.' Though, if you're looking for cringeworthy preachy lyrics, 'After Forever' is definitely up there. I guess if we're restricting ourselves solely to bands which are exclusively associated with the tag 'Christian Metal' then you're right.

With regards to Prodigy, it could be that I'm reading something that isn't there, but look at the lyrics to 'The Watcher' in particular, it seems pretty obvious to me what they're getting at.

If the only perspective they presented was a Christian one, I'd agree with you. But Black Sabbath and Manilla Road both use anti-Christian themes quite often, and Mark Shelton is openly pagan.

Huh, I'm not actually familiar with all of MR's output, but 'Crystal Logic' and 'Dreams of Eschaton' seemed to have strong leanings in that direction, but I suppose if Shelton is openly pagan it was probably a flirtation of sorts. Not sure what you're talking about with regards to Sabbath though.

Could be a brain fart with Sabbath. I may have interpreted some of their lyrics differently than they were intended.

Human Fortress? Not sure if the lyrics are directly Arthur related, but they really have a medieval kingdom kind of thing going on.

Blind Guardian's "A Past and Future Secret" and "Mordred's Song" are pretty obvious, as is Kamelot's "The Shadow of Uther". The Gates of Slumber's "To Kill and Be King" fits, but you probably know that one as well. Is Morgana Lefay Arthurian? I would assume so because of the name, but I haven't listened to them enough to be sure. That's about all I can think of at the moment, I'll check out some more lyrics and see if I can come up with anything.

Wow, a lot of attitude there for a rather callous and un-serious statement. Those bands sure had some quasi-religious lyrics at times but like Jophelerx said, not out and out Christian by any means. As in, it's not the primary definition of their sound and image.

As for Trouble, well I'll call a mea culpa on that, as I'm not really familiar with much of their stuff at all. Ah well.

I'm sure you've heard them already but I got some Tyrant vibes from the Chicago Enforcer. I know this release got a little bit of buzz around here when it was first released. They remind me of Slauter Xstroyes somehow as well...interesting band, it's a shame they didn't put out more material.

the song order is totally wrong and I might have forgotten a track or two but here goes:

Hammer of the Witches/Death by the Hammer/Witches Brew (Medley)
Friction in Mass or Children of the Night, not totally sure on this one.
Taken by Storm
Divine Victim
Road of Kings
Haunted Palace
Flaming Metal Systems
Heavy Metal to the World
Up from the Crypt
Necropolis
Crystal Logic
Cage of Mirrors

Pretty fucking good if you were itching to hear to more energetic/singalongy 80's material like I was!

Also, if you get to see Manilla Road and you catch them hanging out before/after, SAY HELLO! They are easily the most fan-friendly band I've ever met, I got so drunk with them that I didn't even make it to see Grand Magus and Venom, haha!

They played pretty much the same set when I saw them at Warriors of Metal, with the addition of "Brethren of the Hammer", "The Riddle Master", and maybe one other. We didn't get "Cage of Mirrors", though. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to hang out with them as the show ended really late because a tornado had delayed everything. It was a great time, though, I heartily recommend Warriors of Metal to anyone anywhere near Ohio. It's small but getting steadily bigger.

In London we got all those songs (apart from 'Cage of Mirrors'), and more! :D Yeah, awesome guys, too. I spent the best part of an hour chatting to Shark before the gig and a similar period of time talking to Hellroadie afterwards.

Rage's Black in Mind is a cool album. I dig the Lovecraft themed first half and the second half holds up nicely, too. It doesn't really feel too long for a 14 song album either (although, 'The Price of War' is perhaps a song I could've done without, not bad, though). It's pretty interesting to hear a European power metal band doing some Lovecraft-themed stuff, at any rate.

I've owned Black in Mind for a lot of years but honestly I think it really is way too long. There's not much variation at all, and it doesn't help that nearly all the songs seem to be in the same key; I bet you could switch a lot of the riffs between songs and not even notice. It does have some cool songs, but honestly they might as well just have chopped off the last 6 or so songs because I rarely make it further than that.

The main problem i have with every Rage album is that they are too long. Usually 75% are great songs, the rest are fillers. Maybe 'The Missing Link' being the only exception.

Really? There's thrashy numbers, grooving numbers, regular power metal ones... and a big ballad on the end. It's got some nice acoustic and string passages, too. I don't really think it's all so one-track-minded.

Metroplex, I kinda agree that 14 songs can be a "long-haul" listen. But Perfect Man holds up pretty well with its 14 (for the CD release, the LP was originally 12 songs). The Missing Link was definitely overlong from what I remember, though, but I should probably revisit that one. I think 'Who Dares?' is a damn good song, though.

Black in Mind ain't bad. First half is awesome but the second half starts to drag and really isn't very good at all...if they had ended the album with that one 10 minute track, it would've been a classic. For Rage albums I usually turn to Unity or their newest, 21.
