All already known, thanks anyways. Also have both wehrmacht albums, and almost all of D.R.I. . Looking for more recent bands.

Dr. Living Dead from what I remember got rid of a lot of the crossover elements after the demos, but their demos sound like what you are looking for.

Any newer thrash bands that are more akin to early Testament and Metallica?

Check out some of these:

Spoiler: show
Algebra

Coldsteel (not new, but this EP is new and they aren't particularly popular)

Evile

Havok (not sure if this is the best recommendation, but I kinda get a Metallica vibe from them)

Razormaze

Hopefully some of those cover it. Algebra and Razormaze are probably the closest. Even though the Metallica/Testament sound became pretty popular by the end of the 80s and early 90s, it seems like modern bands prefer to worship Exodus.

Hello,

Could you recommend some bands that play fast thrash, with drumming that sounds like it's being done with a hammer and guitar sound similar to that here: http://youtu.be/tLFECOzy0E8?t=3m47s or at the beginning of Vio-lence's "Kill on Command"?

Thanks a lot!

I'm sure somebody probably already asked this way back in the thread, but are some other really good German thrash metal bands other Destruction, Sodom, Kreator, and Dew-Scented?

Mekong Delta are one of my favourites, but they are a very progressive band in places.

Also check out Desaster, Deathrow, Depressive Age, Ketzer, Nocturnal, Protector, Tankard and Vendetta.

And just to be clear, I'm not ignoring Holy Moses, but I wouldn't especially recommend them.

Ok, my first post on here, and first time in years I've looked for reco's, but the past 2 years are letting me down a lot where metal is concerned so... Starting for help with thrash bands. Here's some of my favorite thrash bands as an example of the sound and vocal styles I like most.

Spoiler: show

Naturally I enjoy old Metallica, Megadeth, Annihilator and so on, but modern days they don't dish out anything I enjoy. Also don't mind genre mashups, I listen to practically every genre imaginable, but mostly into thrash, death and technical. Here's examples of some genre mashups I like for thrash.

Spoiler: show
Exmortus - Foe Hammer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUD0gBG1TG8

Feared - Forever Old
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXZWn-Ei8yM

Vader - Triumph of Death
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRtj9qv30dg

Iced Earth - Dystopia
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuwW9IVwZ0U

Groove Metal is always worth having too so...
Devildriver - Another Night In London
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_c6FoODDNE

Also, not a huge LoG fan, but some songs like this are quite enjoyable I find.
Lamb Of God - Guilty
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iJcpARDaGw

So based on all that, if anyone has some recommendations that are similar to these it would be greatly appreciated. I've been doing so much searching to find nothing I'm interested in, typically due to vocals not blending with instrumentals I think, so yah, I'm on the verge of yanking my hair out.

Forbidden didn't interest me much, but Heathen was decent, so thank you. Also just discovered Angelus Apatrida, liking them so far, they seem to draw influence from a lot of great bands, or that's my opinion based on what I've heard from their new album so far. Still welcoming more recommendations if anyone has any.

We have similar tastes. I have all those albums but two. And I have Angelus Apartida too. I haven't liked much of what's out there lately either. These aren't an exact match to your list, but since we have similar tastes maybe you'll like them.

Warfect - Exoneration Denied

After All - Dawn of the Enforcer

Warfect has some enjoyable stuff, thanks. Wasn't too fond of vocalist from After All though.

I wasn't sure whether you would like the throaty vocals, like Warfect, or the speed metal style vocals like After All, but now I know. Here are a few more I thought of. I'm afraid the pickins are slim.

Prophecy - Legions of Violence (I forgot about this one)

4Arm - Submission for Liberty (A little too close to Metallica for me. The rest of the album isn't quite this much of a direct copy. There are actually parts that remind me of Testament.)

Hatriot - Heroes of Origin (You probably already know this one. Exodus' old/new singer)

Sodom - In War and Pieces (I assume you know about this one)

You might like Hexen - Being And Nothingness. One of my favorite new thrash albums:

Spoiler: show

Maybe Short Sharp Shock - Limp. Gasp. Collapse? It's crossover thrash. A bit groovier/simpler than what you are searching for I think. (And featuring Jeff Walker from Carcass on two songs)

Spoiler: show

And I don't think this is what you are searching for based on what you posted. This one has very clean vocals, and your examples didn't. But the music is good, so I'll post it anyway. After All - Dawn Of The Enforcer

Spoiler: show

Yah, I know Hatriot and Sodom, the other 2 are good finds though, thanks. As for vocals, I listen to a wide spectrum of metal genre's in general, so I'm pretty open to a lot of vocal styles, but sometimes I feel they just don't blend with the instrumental, I seem to be getting overly picky as I get older, lol.

This is a response to Metallica75's request for bands like Metallica, Paradox, Heathen: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=109572

The first thing to know is that it's going to be hard to find anything that rivals Metallica. They are in a class of their own. So, be prepared to lower your standards.

I remember when I first discovered Metallica and was wowed by their early albums, that made me thought that I liked thrash, so I tried listening to a lot of other thrash bands -- which was frustrating, because didn't like most of them. Ultimately I realized that just because you love Metallica doesn't necessarily mean you'll love any other thrash band. So, a wild idea: have you tried other genres? Maybe speed metal or power metal? You'll find a lot of great bands there that satisfy many of the requirements you mention - great songwriting, catchy, melodic, no screaming.

That said, if you're sure you want thrash, the following jump to my mind as albums you might enjoy:
Powermad Absolute Power
Flotsam & Jetsam No Place for Disgrace
Onslaught In Search of Sanity
Coroner Mental Vortex

Let me also mention some other thrash classics that you didn't mention, but which might be worth trying:
Annihilator Criteria for a Black Widow
Exodus Bonded by Blood
Destruction Cracked Brain

Are you willing to try something different? These might not be what you're looking for, but I'll mention them in case you are willing to branch out:
Hallows Eve Monument - thrashy speed metal
Brainstorm Liquid Monster - thrashy power metal
Godgory Resurrection - technically melodeath, but try it anyway
Witchery Dead Symphony for the Devil - blackened thrash
Sword Metalized - plain old heavy metal

How dead-set are you on thrash? Are you willing to branch out to thrash-y power metal? If so, there are a bunch of albums with amazing songwriting -- they're not thrash, but in exchange you get some outstanding quality:
Intense As Our Army Grows - might be exactly what you're looking for
Helstar Nosferatu - you might not like the vocals, but the guitars are godly
Heavens Gate Livin' in Hysteria - vocals might be too high-pitched for you
Accept Blood of the Nations - vocals might not be your thing
Running Wild Black Hand Inn

You mentioned Artillery. I just want to double-check whether you tried their By Inheritance album. Their quality varies a lot from album to album, so if you haven't tried By Inheritance, I really encourage you to give that a try. It's OK if it's not your thing, just thought I'd check to be sure.

Deadweight - thank you for that, I appreciate it. It's not about genres for me at all. I don't care what genre something is classified as, as long as I like it. That's why instead of asking for Thrash recommendations or power metal recommendations, I listed some bands that I really, really enjoy. I know Metallica is on another level, and lowered expectations and tried to branch out, which is how I discovered Paradox and Heathen. I like Heathen more than Paradox, but they're both awesome. If Metallica is a perfect 10 for me, then Heathen is a 9 and Paradox is an 8.

As for Artillery, it was By Inheritance that I listened to. Don't get me wrong, instrumentally it's awesome, but the vocals are just too much for me. I know 100% that I'm extremely picky, and that's okay. If 10 people reply saying there's nothing else out there I'll like, than that's fine. I just want to know if there's another Paradox or Heathen out there, and figured the best way to find out is by asking other people who love Metallica, Heathen, and Paradox specifically. I also love Iron Maiden, but they're in their own class as well.

Some bands that I like, but not nearly as much as my favs are Testament, Mortal Sin, Onslaught, Annihilator, etc.

Did you try Mortal Sin's second album Face of Despair? I think it is better than Mayhemic honestly.

^Definitely a lot catchier and more produced. Mayhemic Destruction was recorded quicker than most demo tapes!

Yeah ive heard both and agree with you guys. I havent really tried any genres outside of thrash, so id be really interested to try out some non thrash if you guys think it will better fit what im looking for...good clean vocals (singing), melodic sections, dual guitar harmonys, good memorable choruses and overall catchy "classic" songs.

As much as I really appreciate the recommendations I got, the guitar tones were too thin if you know what I mean. Not heavy enough.
Here I'll try to be more specific. Are there any bands similar to these guys:

I hope I didn't sound rude. That was not my intention at all.

Thank you!

To Metallica75
You might enjoy Prototype. Their music is more prog-oriented but still quite thrashy. Great songwriting and amazing guitarwork. Vocals on their last album differ from what you can hear on earlier albums so I'm posting two songs as examples:

Power or speed metal has many examples that check all your boxes. However, they don't have the aggressiveness of thrash. But you might want to ask in the heavy/power/speed metal thread. I'll throw a power metal classic at you to take to that thread. Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction

But before you go, I'm going to throw a lock for a couple of AJFL songs at you. Trouble is, there are only a few songs on the album that sound this close to Metallica, and no other Meshuggah album sounds like this.

Meshuggah - Contradictions Collapse

more Meshuggah

Can some of you recommend me some obscure gems from the 80's/90's?
I know all the greats.. Exodus, Dark Angel, Vio-lence, Razor, etc. and know some of the more "obscure" bands like Assassin, Exumer, Paradox, Infernal Majesty, Wargasm, Xentrix, Morbid Saint.. but I need more bands from that era that weren't as well known but still cult classics.

I'm trying to get back into metal as I fell out of the loop for a few years and thrash was always my forte, so all the help possible would be appreciated. :)

Also early death/thrash would be acceptable, like Sadus, Incubus, Hellwitch, Sextrash, Vulcano, etc.

Not sure how obscure some of these are, but these are some of my favourites:

Spoiler: show
Cyclone - Brutal Destruction - Really catchy songs, although it is fairly straight forward thrash
Cyclone Temple - I Hate Therefore I Am - This is sort of like a not-as-good version of Victims of Deception (which means it is still really great)
Darkness - Death Squad - pure German goodness. I've found this album hasn't held up for me as well as a lot of my other favourites, but I loved it when I first got it
Excel - Split Image - One of the more underrated crossover acts. "Your Life, My Life" is up there with anything D.R.I. ever did
Gammacide - Victims of Science - Incredibly brutal thrash. This album is from 1989 and has blast beats; although other bands did blasting, it hadn't found its way into much thrash at this point. Also, the vocalist is the closest anyone ever got to Sean Killian
Hallows Eve - Tales of Terror - Somewhat primitive thrash that is really aggressive, but catchy.
Morbid Scream - Really great demo thrash. Based on their sound, I thought they were from Texas (they aren't). They're on the more aggressive side of thrash, and few songs beat "Fist In Your Face".
Num Skull - Ritually Abused - Very brutal thrash in the vein of Sadus.
Paradox - Heresy - One of the most underrated thrash albums ever. It is a tech-thrash masterpiece. The vocalist is more melodic.
Torture - Similar to Gammacide above, this album is very brutal thrash, but it has some humour in it too.

Can some of you recommend me some obscure gems from the 80's/90's?

Not sure if these are obscure enough.

Vendetta - Brain Damage

Forced Entry - Uncertain Future

English Dogs - Where Legend Began (crossover)

Crumbsuckers - B.O.M.B. (crossover)

Znowhite - Act of God

Indestructible Noise Command - Razorback

Coven - Death Walks Behind You

So far all good recommendations. Thanks! Completely forgot about Gammacide, really good thrash right there.

Also early death/thrash would be acceptable, like Sadus, Incubus, Hellwitch, Sextrash, Vulcano, etc.

Hypnosia
Sepultura's "Schizophrenia"
Demolition Hammer
Merciless Death
Acid Death

well not all "early" but could match that

Righteous. Already know and love Schizophrenia and DemoHammer, but the others I'm unfamiliar with.
Keep 'em coming people! Thanks!

New additions to the list I've found:
Attomica "Attomica" / "Disturbing The Noise"
Living Death "Protected From Reality"
Devastation "Idolatry"
Dyoxen "First Among Equals"
Intruder "Higher Form Of Killing"
Atrophy's discography
Shah "Beware"

Any others that can be added are appreciated.
