I want to thank the people that had recommended a bunch of bands to me, but yeah, I don't think thrash is for me. Nothing really grabbed me that much. Thanks for the effort though, I appreciate it!

I also have to cite Fastkill and Sabbat (Sabbat has more black-influenced proclivities but thrash is still a fairly prominent part of their makeup ala Sarcofago/early Sodom), both from Japan. Also, one should take extra caution not to forget about the mighty Protector. if they have not been thrown up your alley recently. Probably my all time favorite thrash metal album next to Pleasure to Kill and Spectrum of Death (yes, those are my favorites--just much too tempting). See Protector for an oft-forgotten bit of thrashing recklessness.

Also, while I'm at it, I'm not sure if you're too familiar with it already or if it is further than the above than your desired criteria, but I figured it may be worthwhile for at least a future upheaval if all else fails. Check out Assassin's Interstellar Experience (something about the song "Junk Food" that gets me that's extremely and evasively ineffable and rather striking but nonetheless. If anything, in my book it is not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I suppose that a scant listen if you truly do not find it appealing might not hurt to rouse one's senses. There is something about the thrash metal genre in particular that has always struck me as a 'quantity over quality' enterprise, but I cannot see anything wrong with that given the salvageable output of the aforementioned bands and their successors. If only the neo-cats could get it right, which some of them manage to do but lack the necessary 'punch'.

Edit: Shit, for Assassin, just check out Upcoming Terror its better and it slipped my mind--the debut.

Is there some good crossover that's not happy or lively sounding but more bleak/apocalyptical in a crust way?

I am looking for some good Thrash metal with some d-beats.

I've recently got into some Thrash like Kreator, Coroner, Vektor, Voivod, etc and just coming off a huge Swedish Death metal kick.

Would love to know if there are any Thrash bands that incorprate d-beats. I feel it could fit in a lot of songs but they are never there.

Could you please explain what a d-beat is?

Nooo. The D-beat was developed in the Swedish hardcore scene in the late 70s, early 80s. The emergence of Death Metal in Sweden after the Florida scene took off resulted in d-beats being used in a lot of places where a typical blast beat was used in the Florida DM scene.

It's basically a punk beat but sounds awesome with metal. I provided an example below. Entombed from Sweden. The first drum beat used in the song is a d-beat.

Oh, a punk drum beat?

Is this one a d-beat? (starting at 0:28) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJN42QURp2A

I love that beat and wish more thrash bands would do it. But realize that it has happen very rarely in the Big 4 and most thrash bands just copy those bands and offer little of their own.

It is not a d-beat in the traditional sense but it is rather punky and satisfying on what I was looking for.

What is your drummer's influences on the Thrash side?

My drum machine. :)

But seriously, he is our former drummer and I wrote this whole song on a drum machine and a home demo. He can play most anything I record and makes up a lot of his own fills but the idea of the "d-beat" here was mine. Not sure why I chose it (I wrote the song in 2000 or so). He loves a lot of stuff but I think some of his favorite thrash stuff is stuff like "Rust in Peace". He is mainly a death metal drummer and did a tour with Vile.

Rare for me to get excited by thrash these days, but the new Power Trip just found its way on youtube and I love this band.

Dude, Manifest Decimation is one of my favorite crossover thrash records, ever. That album is bouncy like a D.R.I. album in spots, but sounds like a fucking death metal record. It's insane. The sound of that album is insane.

From what I remember, 'Persistence Of Time' by Anthrax was slower and heavy as hell. Haven't heard it in a while, though... Always remember loving it.

I would say Sodom Better off dead has that slow and steady thrash approach that has South of Heaven or Persistence of time.

Doesn't sound like Slayer, but slow and heavy (for thrash) ...

You might find this one a little faster than what you're looking for, but since you like Slayer you might find some songs on this album agreeable in style.

Same here ...

I'm looking for thrash metal that's both technical and aggressive, since a lot of the 'technical' thrash metal I tend to find seems to often linger in the less extreme end of the thrash spectrum. I enjoy Coroner and Vektor as much as anybody else, but I'd like to hear a thrash band that combines their flair for songwriting and blistering technicality with the extremity of more violent thrash metal bands.

Check out the new Ripper album. Very aggressive death/thrash with wild bass playing, and some good guitar work too.

A lot of other names that come to mind either aren't technical enough (Incubus) or aren't heavy enough (Intruder's 3rd album gets there at times, but nowhere near "violent").

I'm familiar with Ripper and Aspid-- I've got Ripper's Raising the Corpse, which is a great album but not quite as technical as I'm looking for here, unless the new album cranked up the technical aspects. As for Aspid, also great, and the more violent moments on their one album are pretty dead-on what I'm looking for here.

Sadus... well, who doesn't know Sadus?

Thanks for the recommendations so far!

I'm familiar with Syzygial Miscreancy, yeah (decent album, kind of lacking in memorable riffs for me personally though).

maybe agressor's (FRA) debut, idolatry by devastation or mind crisis by insanity. these may be going into death/thrash territory though. devastation is probably your best bet.

Haha, sorry. I realise it's a very niche request in an already rather niche genre, and I'm familiar with a lot of the more prominent names like Sadus , Hellwitch, Invocator, the like. Just hoping I can find some more bands that really nail that sweet spot between technicality and extremity without quite sliding firmly into death metal territory.

Not sure if you're familiar with Chemical Breath or Obliveon, though they're probably a bit far away from what you're really after.

I know Chemical Breath (Fatal Exposure is a great album, albeit a little deeper along the death metal spectrum than I'm looking for) but Obliveon, I've never heard before. Any album in particular that would be a good place to start with them? Thanks again for the recommendations.

I've been hooked on the first Tainted DickMen album (2016 first full-length).
Japanese and the album title is Tornado Thrashing Bomber, all you need to know!
Raging thrash metal, faster than Fastkill. :-D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA3Tn8qJrrs
:headbang:

And for those looking for some Crossover Thrash (thrash/d-beat)
do not miss The Krixhjälters from Sweden. (1989)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLq0LiaIBwU
The best crossover LP! Even better than the Lawnmower Deth/Metal Duck split.

Thanatos - Emerging From the Netherworlds
Dutch tech thrash bordering on death metal

Morbid Saint - Spectrum of Death
US brutal thrash a la Sadus

Vader - Morbid Reich demo
Most people know them as death metal legends, but their first demo is like Slayer in overdrive

Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum
also known more as a classic death metal band, but their first album is brutal, complex thrash

Sacrifice - Forward to Termination
great Canadian thrash, again a la Sadus or Morbid Saint

Nokturnel - Nothing but Hatred
TX brutal, tech thrash. Late in the game, but expertly done

Protected Illusion - Festering Fairytales
obscure Finnish brings the brutal tech thrash, also some punk/grind elements

obvious answers include early Sepultura, Morbid Angel's Thy Kingdom Come demo, Dark Angel

So I haven't paid much attention to thrash metal during the past couple of years but the recent releases by Vektor and Ripper really reignited my interest in the genre. What are some essential albums dropped in the past two to three years?
