Now I'm not looking for symphonic, cheesy CoF-style music, but bands which channel the darker moments of bands such as The Cure while also sticking firmly to the metal side of things (e.g. Type O Negative).

Essentially I want more music that sounds like Tiamat's Wildhoney.

You're looking for this thread. Moonspell's Irreligious should be good for what you're looking for. Very Fields of the Nephilim-ish with some blackened vocals on occasion.
