I'm gonna add Velnias to this thread. They are a blackened golk doom band from Illinois. They only have two albums out, and both of them are epic. Definitely for fans of Agalloch and Drudkh.

One of my favorite "obscure" bands are also one of the bands I am shocked are still "obscure" in the first place... the mighty Putrevore.

I mean the band features two of the most well known guys in Death Metal in Rogga and Dave Rotten, and last year released one of the finest Death Metal albums of the decade in Macabre Kingdom, not to mentioned, IMHO, the best worship Death Metal album of all time with Morphed From Deadbreath. worshiping the legendary Rottrevore:

I could post a lot more, but this isnt the rec board and I don't want to just post a shit ton of recs. Most of them I can understand why they are obscure and didn't or are not really taking off, but this is the one band I don't understand why they are not causing fanboys to shit themselves. Putrevore destroy 98% of these Old School DM Revival bands, yet they have never taken off.

isn't so well known in the rest of the world.
Their debut album "Swallowed by the Ocean's Tide" is a fantastic piece of old school death metal.
Think of old Asphyx, old swe-death and even early Samael (Worship Him era) etc. Coupled with
lyrics often circling around Cthulhu and his Old Ones you maybe get a picture what to expect.

Super filthy black/death metal, no full-lenght so far but this band is young and constantly improving and I like their last demo VERY much.

From the same waters, only less black, more death. Very solid demo and EP.

Venenum, Ataraxy ... get a lot of love around here

Also, waaay more pagan metal fans should know Drygva. Too many of the modern bands don't balance the epicness with headbangability, but this band has just the right balance. Folk/death/black. They make it work. Windir fans may want to take note of this band.

Hah, I know two nobodies that are better than basically any hyped band. I'll share them with you, cause it's not easy finding bands as good as these: Strychnos and Deus Otiosus. Those are the only really good tips I've got that nobody knows about.

I'm going to recommend Thrall now - extremely misanthropic and extinction-preaching Tasmanian black-metal with jarring, dirge like wails and groaning chords in their slower sections, and some black n' roll leanings in the faster parts. There music is tense, cold and unforgiving, with some really tangible foreboding and venomous hatred laid bare to see. They're quite unlike any other black-metal I listen to, but at the same time seem to fit the genre really well.

Actually in the vein of Velnias I would also like to discuss the band Leech. They never put out a proper full-length, having only released demos and a few splits, but I am amazed they never took off. They often get pushed into the whole "Cascadian black metal" tag being from Oregon and playing epic folk-ish black metal. Their music is equal or sometimes even surpasses the quality of the big names associated with this style of metal. I don't know if the band is active or not, but there hasn't been much from them in awhile.

For fans of Kentuckian Panopticon, or Alethes. 231 listeners according to Last.Fm I find these guys to be a little gimmicky or maybe pretentious(I really can't tell...) but Folk Punk fans may like them. Apparently, they have been around since 89'. Then split up 10 years after. And finally reformed in 11'! I will hopefully get a chance to see them live this summer and be able to pic up a few things from them.

I wouldnt mind picking up a CD of their latest album.

Dawning was an old black/doom band from the bay area that featured Bud from Exhumed and a few guys from Pale Existence (another pretty unknown band). These tracks were uploaded a few years ago on a thread on another board, and still I haven't seen any of it pop on youtube/blogs/re-issue or anything. The description from the oriignal post: "Expect a mix of Thergothon styled funeral doom, epic ambient melodic lush keyboards like Summoning meets Raison d'Etre, terrible but interesting drumming, whispery high pitched raspy vocals as though a teenage Ihsahn joined Beherit, And a bunch of swingin' groovy bass lines inspired by Sleep (though the Sleep influence is only present on the live material). Note the occult lyrical themes referencing "the massive wolf", Neptune, Twin Peaks, and He-Man." I would have to add Phantasm, an old school death metal act from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA in the early 90's. They played long, leisurely paced compositions that emphasized texture and atmosphere over direct aggression. They also distinguished themselves from their peers by following a narrative structure in their songs, with the vocalist telling a (typically horror themed) story over the music. Rivendell, a band from austria that kind of reminds me of a folkier summoning (lyrics similarly revolve around lord of the rings), though not quite as good and with even less overtly black metal overtones: the folk elements pretty much dominate the sound here, with the guitar giving sustained long chords as a backbone. Vocals ammount to a grounded, bassy rasp when not singing in stoic, distant choirs. Never heard Organism; sounds like great stuff, lurching/angular but also thoroughly death metal where a lot of similar acts of the time had strong grindcore influence. Funcunt you mentioned fits into the grindier style, but they're definitely another quality weirdo Finnish death metal band. In a similar vein to the latter, are you a fan of Nomicon or Rectum? Both also early Finnish tech-death bands, the former being very hyper and proto-mathcore-esque at portions, the latter surprisingly melodic and tight. As my post regarding Sorathian Dawn got so much positive feedback, I'm going to introduce a few more bands that are absolutely brilliant in my opinion but nobody else has ever heard about. Please tell me what you think about these bands. The first band is Hetroertzen, an obscure raw black metal act from Chile. Their later output is nothing special really, but their debut album is an absolute killer. The second band is From Oblivion, a death metal band from Costa Rica. They have brutal death metal style vocals, but the music itself is very melodic. They have a very unique sound, since I can't think of any other bands that sound similar. The best thing about this band is the vocalist as he has one of the most unique voices in death metal. The last but not least is a Polish death metal / death n' roll band called The Dead Goats (yes, I know. Probably the stupidest band name in existence). The band is very unoriginal because all they do is rip off Entombed and Dismember, but they do it extremely well.

I'll add some traditional metal to the mix here, there are a lot of lost gems in metal history. Sifon (Cz): Here we have a Czech metal band who never really made it outside of their home country. They have been around for a long time (since the late 70's) but did not release their debut album until 1990. That debut is a real monster of an album, complete with sweeping melodies, great choruses, and powerful vocals. They are hard to pigeonhole into one genre. They use a lot of progressive elements as well as power and speed metal. The vocals are probably what stand out the most here, there really isn't anything else like them. They may be the only Mongolian metal band (the only one I know of anyway) that isn't playing some type of "core" shit. They started out playing some pretty epic power/speed metal. This is a band that seemed to have gone about as unnoticed as can be - Detachment. There's not too many metalheads around here, so when someone showed me this album back in the early 2000's I was pretty blown away. This is a progressive death metal band with some cleans, and significant keyboards. It is interesting that their status has been updated to 'active' on MA.

This is another side project of the main man behind Impious Baptism/Nocturnal Graves, and is some great, solid death metal. Very heavy stripped back murkiness. Ensnared. Great demo from a killer Swedish DM outfit. Look forward to a full length... Har Shatan. Naturally if you find raw black metal to be redundant in this day and age, then this is not for you at all. Those who still enjoy traditional (I guess) black metal, then give this underrated, in my opinion, German band a listen. Influences are worn in plain sight on their black sleeves, which I don't care about due to the great song writing. All of this bands material is worth hunting down I believe.

Eldritch is a criminally underrated Bay-Area styled thrash band from Japan. My favourites have to be black cilice, karoth azul, mons veneris, and zagévatre are real good. Don't know if anyones heard of all these bands. Pretty rare shit.

I have tons, but I'll try not to take up too much room here. This 2011 demo by Hermodr [Sweden] may be the one of the best depressive black metal tapes ever released. Proud owner. All DSBM fans should at least hear it once. The most obscure band I actively listen to is one I don't recall having ever discussed with anyone who's actually heard them. That band is/were a symphonic black metal band called Snörkel. You can only find a few of their songs online - low-quality mp3s on their myspace, or better quality BUT volume-jumping Youtube uploads. They were on a label, did an EP and 2 albums, but are impossible to find beyond those songs. http://www.myspace.com/thetruesnorkel All southern metal fans should know Blüe Barrel. Don't be fooled/thrown off by their location. Great vocalist too. Not a huge death metaller, but there are 3 modern bands playing the oldschool style that I've not seen discussed by more than a handful of people. 1) Entrails, an old Swedeath band that were never happy with their demos and gave it up until reforming in the mid-2000s. Very oldschool sound and yet the solos are rather Gothenburgy. It works though, I promise. Entrails - Undead 2) Ataraxy, from Spain. Just superb songwriting, production and gutturals. Ataraxy - Ominous Putrified Ground 3) Venenum, from Germany. Again, their quality simply comes down to songwriting ability, atmosphere, etc.. They have it all in spades. Venenum - Crown of Reversion In black metal, I figure it's a shame that Bethel never did more than 1 demo. There was even an interview discussing future work right before they split. One of the best BM demos of 1997. Bethel - Triumph for the Lost Azure In modern black metal, I was highly impressed by the 2009 EP by the very obscure Slavigrom. Slavigrom - Vízie O Konci Also, waaay more pagan metal fans should know Drygva. Too many of the modern bands don't balance the epicness with headbangability, but this band has just the right balance. Folk/death/black. They make it work. Windir fans may want to take note of this band. Drygva - Path of Volkhves Another old one - Painful Memories, a death/doom band that released a demo in 1996 (re-issued as a full-length in 2006) and split up. Memorial to Suffering is one of my all-time favorite death/doom albums and the title track is one of my favorite songs ever. Painful Memories - Memorial to Suffering

Venenum, Ataraxy and Entrails get a lot of love around here, though it tends to be low key, and all three are great DM bands.

I'll weigh in. I've been a big fan of a an obscure nobody group called Kraken who were part of the NWOBHM. I know almost nothing about them except what is discussed on their band page. They only have 7 songs over 2 very low quality recordings, but the songs themselves, particularly on the EP are great. The best one, is an excellently titled track called The Winged Bulls of Ninveh.
