Indonesia has some great music to offer the world... in the Gamelan genres. I've heard a few Indonesian metal bands, but the ones I've heard all fall into some crappy amateur brutal death metal/grindcore void. Surely this island nation has better and more interesting things to offer!

Well, to get this search started, I did find this little gem:

Kind of like Naked City, but more death metal. So if that rings your bell, check them out!

And on a question probably related to the quest for Indonesian bands that don't suck, what's with the country's fascination with brutal death metal? They seem to have a much higher ratio of bands in that style than other countries...

Gotta mention Vallendusk, really great atmospheric BM from Indonesia.

Nothing like the usual brutal death metal you mentioned. Pretty cool.

It's one of those geographic-centric-genre scenes like swedeath etc. Difficult to pin-point how that came about but it's not without reason that Obscene Extreme is taking its franchise there this April. Such things and the fact that bands like Napalm Death visit the country, fuel the growing inclination towards brutal-death/grind genres...so yeah, virtuous cycle is all I can say.

Reccomending Sikaksubur and Jasad. Pretty decent death metal

I forgot about Kekal! I also need to give them another listen. I keep hearing them mentioned in discussions about bands like Sigh, and, well, I like Sigh.

Vallendusk were pretty good. Nothing too radically different for the genre, but they did it well. Cool stuff.

I'll have to check out Sikaksubur and Jasad after work. After some of the embarrassing BDM acts I've heard, those ought to be a good palate cleanser.

Now for another question: how do you get some of this stuff? The independent bands, yeah, just contact them online, blah blah blah, but there are some on regional labels, making things tricky for those of us who can't read that script.

Another another question: how is the metal scene over there? I know there's a strong Islamic force in the culture, but it obviously can't be as oppressive as in, say, Iran. Are there restrictions on the content of albums that can be sold? I know we've got some Indonesian users here, so please paint us a picture!

Brain Ass. They're not even that good, but their name is Brain Ass, and they are thus worth mentioning. And the cover art rules.

Cranial Incisored is one awesome band! Totally unconventional and radical!

There are huge crowds for gigs in Indonesia; 35000 for Suffocation/ Nile at Hammersonic Open Air last year, which I attended. But the response to Indonesian bands seems to be bigger. It's a very self-nourishing scene. Popular local bands can make bucks just off printing like 4 t-shirt designs a month.
