Since when?

I've heard this album a bunch and I've never heard the illusive cowbell. On the very last track, A Subtle Induction, during the intro drum parts, there's a couple hits of cowbell.

Did anybody else notice this, or am I standing here looking like an idiot with my thumb up my ass?

Also, to drum up some discussion (unintentional, I swear to god), what is the fascination with cowbell?

Never noticed the cowbell on any track off Time Does Not Heal, sadly! I don't know if there's any fascination with cowbell, I just think it's a funny detail when it suddenly appears in metal music.

Hoglan is not only a complete beast on the drum but is also known for his makeshift percussion. He's created a lot of his custom stuff from industrial and military parts, including fucking shells!

If it's been said somewhere that he played on a cowbell, than a cowbell it is. Otherwise, this could be anything!

It does sound a bit like a standard cowbell but it could be something else.

It could be a boat propeller, he had or used to have one of those mounted on his kit.

Never noticed it. I don't hear it on the last track either. Is he hitting the rim at the beginning or a cowbell?

It is a midway during the intro. Could be a cowbell but not sure.

I know what you're talking about because I love that song. But it sounds too flat to be a cowbell, like those wooden things or a boat propeller as someone else mentioned. I don't know what it is. And the reason cowbells get so much attention is in part because they're often unexpected and awesome, but mostly because of some stupid skit Saturday Night Live did years ago.

That sounded dumb. Let me rephrase:

The only time I ever heard of Gene Hoglan using makeshift industrial items is during some interview in regards to the DVD he released some years back. Beyond that, I couldn't really hear anything out of the ordinary on the records he's drummed on. Also, is there any album that's regarded as his first when he started using industrial items on his kit? Also, what album(s) did he use a boat propellor on?

I don't know that he's used this stuff post-Dark Angel. And before that, they were not meant to revolutionize drumming but rather as accents. That cowbell-like sound on A Subtle Induction is a good example of something I cannot really identify. Could be a cowbell, could be something he made up, could be something else. I don't remember reading an interview where he specifically mentions this kind of stuff.

These days, I think Hoglan is quite happy using kits in accordance with his sponsor.
