So last year I got the deluxe edition of Abysmal by The Black Dahlia Murder and my I was delighted to find the bonus tracks came on a 3" mini CD. Pointless in a way, but I loved this and I was wondering what other metal bands have released material on this format?

Swallow The Sun's latest is a triple album. 3 CD's for an album seems a bit overkill for me though.

The only thing I have like this is Aurvandil/WSSAMS-Nightlings, I think.

Oh, my bad. I don't know any albums that came out in this format. Hell, I didn't even think those things still existed!

The only ones I know (in metal) are the Voice of Destuction EP and the Already Dead EP by Groinchurn, incidentally both South-African bands, and both good releases whatever some reviewers may say.
While I like the concept (small and lightweight), they can't be played in every CD player which is not really convenient.

I'm not sure I can think of any standalone releases on 3' CDs. But Nuclear Blast have had some special mailorder editions with a bonus 3 inch CD.

Off the top of my head I know the special editions of these albums had a 3 inch CD as a bonus:

Amorphis - Circle
Candlemass - King of the Grey Isles (Tin Case edition)
Soilwork - Sworn to a Great Divide

This. It's not really practical.

Were these ever really a big thing? I can always remember having CD players with a smaller section where the CD sits to fit these little ones, but even when CD singles were a big thing I don't recall ever seeing many of these. I seem to remember having at least one other one at some point but now I can't remember what it was.

Huata's The Solar Work came in a beautiful hand-crafted 3' mini CD!

Not metal, but it's grindcore(/dubstep haha...).

This album by UK melodic death metal band Ignominious Incarceration (who apparently changed their name to The Soulless) came with a bonus 3" cd of demo tracks. The cd is also one of those "shaped" discs, as two of the sides sort of bulge out around a picture of a wolf.

The only other 3" I have, and the first I ever saw, was the one that came with Nine Inch Nails' Broken.

I have a 3" by Dead Raven Choir. I think it wasn't the guy's only one.

Amazing. Will have to find some of these, although some may be pretty tough to acquire. Very surprised at that label! Thanks for these suggestions. Fixed the 3foot thing! Haha sorry

Foreshadow Music from Poland released a bunch of doom metal 3" CD's in the early 00's. The River, Oktor, Quercus, a Moss / Nadja split are the ones I can remember.

Very cool.

I haven't seen these mini-CD's in years! I remember I used to have some before I got into metal but I can't remember which bands they were. It's an interesting format nonetheless.

There's actually such thing as an adapter-disc, which the 3" disc slots into and makes it able to played in slot-type players. Although I can only imagine the horror if the two somehow became separated while playing

Adramelech's The Fall EP was a beautiful 3"CD, and a nice dose of Finnish death metal with quasi-whispered vocals.

Got it and one of the reasons I barely play it is due to this silly format.

Up there with 5" vinyl.

Not that uncommon, way more common than 3" vinyls.
Some i have picked up over the years.
Mostly grindcore, noiscore or hardcore.

Exacerbacion / Mankurt - split
Exogorth & R.T. - split
Gorgonized Dorks / Amnogomusikimalo - split
Half Gorilla / Raperies Like Draperies - split
Hyperemesis / Obliteracao - split
Jeffrey Dahmer / Hate Junkie - split
Präparation-H - 8 Hits From Hell
Psychotic Sufferance / Amnogomusikimalo - split
Psychotic Sufferance / Gorgonized Dorks - split
Sete Star Sept / Pure Noise - split
Shitnoise Bastards / Bone Ache - split
Triturador - Trituragrind
Yacöpsae - Krank Ist Normal (The reissue of this 7" was released on a 3" CD)
V.A. - Sword Of Thrash III: Hard Core Hydrophobia

The sword of thrash series is a very good one, there is at least 6 volymes in this series, only featured are obscure hardcore and metal bands from Japan that were active during the early to mid 90's. (All volumes were released on either CD or LP)
Tons of quality stuff! :headbang:

Ah yes the 100 song 3" cd (think track 99 was two on one if i recall as i dunno if cd players can normally read tracks beyond that).
EDIT: scratch that track 100 was one of those stupid track 0 hold rewind at the beginning of the cd situations.

Silly formats seem to be mostly a grind and noise related fixation, I know the few 3" cds and 5" vinyls I own fall into those genres.

There are a bunch more. They had a small following in Japan for a while as well. Some off the top of my head:
Mekong Delta "Toccata" (Aaarrrg)
Expiration "Deviated" (Repulse)
Golgotha "The Way Of Confussion" [sic] (Repulse)
Crimson Glory "Dream Dancer" (Japan)
Metallica "One" and "The Unforgiven"
Sodom "Ausgebombt" (Steamhammer)
V/A "Rock Hard Presents Gods Of Grind (1 trk each of Entombed, Confessor, Carcass, Cathedral)
Possession "Scourge And Fire" (self-released)
Anthrax "Anti Social"
Antigama / Drugs Of Faith (split)
Cripple Bastards "Live To Hate People"
Zarathustra had a couple
Guns N' Roses had a bunch (Patience; Night Train; Welcome to The Jungle)
etc., etc.

I had no idea they were so common. Before the TBDM one I got I can only ever remember seeing them as some magazine cover CDs back when I was a kid. Shit like 'Smash Hits!' rags

Yes that's the one. If I remember correctly, the entire album is over in less than 30 minutes?

Anyway I digress, I've never seen a 3" CD before or since ASOM. Whilst somewhat novel, I agree with the consensus that they are, for the most part, pointless.

The item as a whole, the 3" being housed in a mini-DVD case, does look cool and all, but I've never popped the CD into the stereo to be honest. I just listened to the digital files I downloaded at the time.

There's a King Diamond release called Collector's Item, which appears to no longer be listed on the archives. It's a compilation of 5 songs, but it's on a somewhat 3" CD that's shaped like King Diamond's head. If you look at the back of it, the data is in the 3" CD format but it bounces around in your CD player due to the uneven shape. Maybe I'll dig it out and try to put up a pic.

Shaped CDs are a different story altogether.. Nuclear Blast did a bunch of them in the 90s/00s. I've got the Dimmu Borgir live one, it plays fine but does make a bit of a racket in the player.

Not on MA but the original release of Nine Inch Nails "Broken" ep had the 2 cover songs on a separate 3 inch cd from the main CD. Not sure if any later versions were like this but it was pretty cool at the time.

I think the Locust put out some square three-incher once iirc. I remember my brother buying it and being kinda weirded out.

The later versions had them on tracks 98 and 99 IIRC...

the PCP Torpedo re-issue uses this format as well. and to make it doubly pointless, the mini disc is surrounded by clear plastic making it the size of a normal cd. i have never seen anything like it before or since, and i have no idea why they did that

I used to have the CD-single of System Of A Down - "Aerials" and it was like that... also a lot of singles and EPs used to have a similar format but there was non-refractive silver (basically just a mirror, without the rainbow-colours you get when light reflects on actual CD foil) instead of transparent. It makes sense in the way that it's not wasting any refractive foil for the blank portion of the disc.

As well as some of the 3" (and 5" vinyl) mentioned above, I also have Maudlin of the Well - Secret Song.

The most interesting one I have, though, is the 3" shape split between Fantômas and Melt Banana!
