Aside from the non-extreme bands influenced by black metal or post-rock (tremolo picking is as much a trademark of post-rock as it is of black metal) like Agalloch, I can only remember it being implemented in guitar solos. |

Trem picking blurs the rhythm of the individual strums a bit. |

Dodsferd has some pretty damn awesome pissed off riffs like in Hypocrtic Shitfuckers still breathing. Like just look at the title of the song lol. Also Forteresse's Honneur et Tradition is absolutely amazing. I noticed how that was recommended so I definitely second it. L'Espirit du Courant by Brume D'Automne is pretty damn crazy too. |

It was used in surf music. The first example of this I ever heard is "Misirlou" by The Surfaris from the early 1960's; and for me, this remains the classic example. This song--probably more than any other--is what got me interested in instrumental hard rock. Here is a more recent performance: The Surfaris - Misirlou Dick Dale is credited with popularizing this old Greek folk song as an electric guitar classic; though I don't think he was as well known in Minnesota, which is where I was at the time. Although a bit similar to the dismember - override of the overture riff. When I think of tremolo picked riffs this one comes directly to mind. But that also may be because I always play it with band practice to warm up.

I love these two: The riff that comes approximately 30 seconds in is beautifully chaotic. The first time I listened to it, it got stuck in my head and it's been there ever since. It's an amazing mix of melody, eerie atmosphere and evil in musical form, condensed into one song, I love it. What I always liked of Dismember was its ability to craft very melodic songs and still sound more death metal than most of the bands of their time, more specifically with this album. Most people would say that Dismember's peak was with Like an Ever Flowing Stream (and of course it's a masterpiece), but in my opinion the band reached its finest hour with Massive Killing Capacity and Death Metal, perfect blends of melody and death metal. I also agree with the guy that posted "Visions from the Dark Side". I have to think of more examples though, it's something I take time to do. |

I am with Warlust on his Darkthrone and Burzum picks. "Jesus' Tod" especially. Those two riffs are probably among the best Varg ever wrote, and they are so memorable that at times they'll just start "playing" in my head. I love how the song's introduced by having the guitar just play both of them alone before drums and bass come in, and then it's just a very steady rolling double bass through the whole thing while those riffs continue to burrow their way into your ears. |

These two immediately spring to mind. I got into Horna a bout a year or so ago, and Vihan Tie may have some of the best black metal tremolo riffing I've ever heard. That main melody is just so addictive and the midpaced section is equally if not more so. |

That Malevolent Creation song fucking rules, its a shame that isn't one of their more notable songs. Envenomed as a whole is one of their best albums. Aside from Horna and Sargeist, I've been into alotta Baptism's early-ish stuff, everything up to Grim Arts is pretty much textbook "how Finnish black metal should sound" Also this early Nattfog demo has some of the best tremolo riffs I've heard in a long while, if you can get past the super lo-fi production that riff around the 2:00 mark and then at around 3:20 are pretty majestic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXz0Axw9DxE |

The starting riff of Ea, lord of the depths by Burzum is probably my favourite tremolo riff to play. Windir's Journey to the End pretty much taught me to tremolo pick when I was still learning. |

Horna's material that can most accurately be described as aggressive tremolo driven (but melodic) is some material from Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne, early full-lengths as well as Hiidentorni demo, and some material on Sanojesi Äärelle. It's a cover of Pest(Fin) though. dude this first album material is fucking BRILLIANT!!! I can't believe I've never checked this stuff out before. This band is so good. Its so catchy. Also on the power metal subject, Adramelch's Zephyrus climaxes on a tremolo-picked part in the last 30 seconds or so of the song, with the guitarists playing a different melody for a "counterpoint" (at least in the At the Gates sense) feel. Probably my favorite tremolo picked section in any song. EDIT: Oh, and there's a good bit of tremolo picking in some of Running Wild's stuff too. The Phantom Of Black Hand Hill is a good example; some parts almost sound proto-Summoning or something. |
