Hello, I am new to this site. It is a fabulous website and I am enjoying it a lot. I am a huge fan of metal bands with female fronted vocals. Currently, I am listening to Within Temptation and Dark Princess. Is there a way to search for bands within the website, that are led by female vocals?

Check out the Recommendations forum. If you do some sniffing around, I'm sure you can find a thread relevant to your search.

Alternatively, my Last.fm has a large number of female-fronted bands.

EDIT: I'll save you some time. Remove the space before .com.

The Gathering are my favourite band, I would recommend starting with Mandylion, their first female fronted album. And at the risk of annoying mods for making a list, here's a list of bands you might like given you like WT:
Delain
kingfisher sky
after forever
stream of passion
autumn
agua de annique/anneke van giersbergen
octavia sperati
nightwish
edenbridge
the 3rd and the mortal (first one)
ashes you leave
amberian dawn
amederia
lacuna coil (upto and including karmacode)
lunatica
xandria
visions of atlantis
epica
leaves' eyes
theatre of tragedy (first three)
lullacry

Again, sorry about the list. Got too much university work I should be doing instead to write a description of each one.

I'm going to give a special shoutout to The Agonist. Eluveitie is fronted by a man, but their album Evocation I (and I would presume Evocation II, which is scheduled for release in December) is done exclusively by their backup vocalist, who is female.

"The" female-fronted metal band is Arch Enemy (2000-present). Melodic Death Metal, but save for Wages of Sin, I don't find their efforts with Angela particularly great.

Wiiiitch Mountain!

I don't want to make a list of female-fronted bands but I do want to focus on this band. They're a really cool doom band headed by the brilliant and mystic Uta Plotkin. I believe, Metantoine would also approve of this.

Ah yes! Of course I would. But, I'm not sure he's looking for this kind of music though. Still, Uta is amaziiiiiiiiing and she's a very sweet person.

The Agonist is lame.

A good band I enjoy is Theatres des Vampires. Earlier TdV was fronted by a male and there would be some female vocals, but later in their career, the founder quit the band and now it's fronted by Sonya Scarlet.
It used to be some kind of symphonic BM à la CoF but now it's just regular Goth Metal.

Check out Theatres des Vampires - Til the last drop of blood, very good song

I will check out Witch Mountain......I like many different styles of Rock/Metal. Just downloaded them on my IPod. Chose the album "South of Salem".
Thanks for the suggestion.

Swell topic. I'm really into male fronted metal bands right now. Could anyone make a list of that too? That would be great!

For old thrashers like me, the list of female fronted bands begins and ends with Sacrilege UK. Probably THE best U.K. thrash band prior to the Earache Records era. At least I think so.

They're female fronted now? Last I knew they had a guy on vocals.

You should check out Epica though. They're pretty well known, but pretty amazing. They're the band that got me into progressive metal, power metal, and they started me on the path to extreme metal!

Ludicra and Christian Mistress are better than every band mentioned so far in this thread. Except maybe Witch Mountain, who I haven't checked out, but I'll take my chances there.

I agree with the Sacrilege rec, Behind the Realms of Madness is solid. Jex Thoth deserve a mention too.

Hey, thanks for the recs, Scourge441; never heard of either bands you mentioned, but from the few samples I've checked out after reading your post, both seem interesting, especially Christian Mistress (although their singer isn't too impressive, I must say).

If we're really mentioning recommendable female-fronted metal bands, then let's not forget about either Sentinel Beast (short-lived, awesome mid-80s speed metal band with one pissed-off woman at the helm) or Malteze (short-lived, amazing late 80s hard/heavy/power band fronted by one insanely classy and powerful lady). While not nearly as remarkable as the other two, I'd aslo cite White Skull, because they're a nice, solid EuroPM band without pretension or floweriness, fronted by Chris Boltendahl's femal counterpart, essentially (hear them duel it out if you're not convinced). Also, early Astarte (bleak, raw late 90s black metal with a sense of grandeur and hypnotic melodies, oh and happened to be an all-female band at the time, though you'd never really guess by listening to them).

Holy Moses is pretty boring beyond Finished with the Dogs (and then again, that album is just solid).

I made a list of Occult Rock bands (ie doom/retrometal/70s rock with satanic/occult/magic themes), of which a huge number are female fronted.
http://www.reddit.com/r/Metal/comments/ ... ghost_jex/

Here's a quick sample

* [Witch Mountain](http://witchmountain.bandcamp.com/releases) - Clean trad Doom with melodic soaring female vocals.

* [Jex Thoth](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCQTpUinZIU) - Psychedelic hippy rock and doom with the lovely smokey voice of Jex.

* [Sabbath Assembly](http://sabbathassembly.bandcamp.com/) (Vocals by Jex in the first, but not in the upcoming album - A bunch of christian cultish hymns transformed into hypnotic psychedelic gospel rock.

* [Blood Ceremony](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hFaH7Ey0oQ) - Female doomy flute-tinged witch rock.

* [The Devil's Blood](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHGlKJj0XEo) - Female occult rock.

* [Jess and the Ancient Ones](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofI2heJhcOc) - Female occult/psychedelic/prog rock with 70s influences and organs, and plenty of classic metal energy. My favourite album of 2012.

* [Cauchemar](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wf6thTTdcgE) - Female. Retro doom. French canadian.

* [Rituals of the Oak](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na62KRSSjEk) - Slow female trad doom. Not very occult rock, except for this song which is the most mellow and psychedelic that they’ve done.

* [Wooden Stake](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMW7hZDsOUg) - Female lo-fi horror doom with a few tasty growls.

(Sorry, I'm not going to re-hyperlink all the text)

Believe it or not I once thought Bo Summer of Panzerchrist was a woman. I think it had to do with me misinterpreting the band pic at the time (crica 2005)

Anywho, Liv Kristine's solo project, despite being borderline goth rock, is actually really catchy and pretty good, at least Libertine is.

ANCIENT BARDS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OvxsC4xUJ8) - like old-school Rhapsody.

LEAVES' EYES (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0r7Bb8fwJVI) - mellower stuff.

CHRISTIAN MISTRESS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDz_kDzDgF8) - Sabbathy-sounding.

HUNTRESS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hueW2YO1570) - a little heavier.

DECADENCE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_BfLIkM4zQ) - a lot heavier.

FORGOTTEN TALES (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqZiFzpGnqo) - power metal.

CRYSTAL VIPER (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfKPu8aBct0) - traditional heavy metal-ish.

CASTLE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptJhEbziY60) - doomy stuff.

SEVEN KINGDOMS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zxASerVano) - speedy power metal.

Abnormality immediately came to mind (they're semi-local heroes), though you'll hate them if you don't like death metal.

Very happy to see someone else likes Chastain! IMO, Leather's vocals have more guts than a majority of traditional male vocalists.

Never heard of your other two recommendations but I'll check 'em out just on the strength of your first one :D

Also, I second that person who strongly recommended The Gathering's Mandylion. That album is a masterpiece, IMO.

I've thought about this too, but there isn't a special tag for this in the archives, although it would be cool if there was.

However, now there are really tons of bands.

You could try youtube, there are a lot of bands, and there's also some videos on 1980s bands too.

I know Thunderstick of Samson had a solo band with a female singer. I haven't listened to them at all but it's an intriguing enough idea.

Old Theatre of Tragedy. Not necessarily fronted with a female, but she's pretty prevalent. I say old only because newer TOT sucks.

I guess I could mention Derketa but I'm not sure they really count. Death growls don't exactly sound feminine. If that's what the OP is looking for.
