A fine example of what I'm talking about is Nitro, who can only be taken as a complete joke, sounding as though they recorded in a studio filled with helium, but were also the band that spawned Michael Angelo Batio, resulting in some really crappy metal with incredible guitar. So essentially my question to you is what are some bands you've heard who are so over the top that they're either completely terrible or perhaps they turn out amazing in their own strange way?

GWAR. While their music isn't terrible or anything, I highly doubt they would stand out or be as notorious as they are without their absurd live shows. Pretty much the definition of "over the top" in my book. I've only seen them live once, and I laughed uncontrollably the whole time. Ridiculously awesome.

That LLN band Susvourtre, or whatever it's called. It's a joke band, yeah, but it's also some of most retarded music I've ever heard.

Cardiacs. Not metal, but their combination or punk and prog and circus music with the deranged lyrics, virtuoistic keyboard work (tuned to carnival style for maximum jubilance) and crazy saxophones and the accented English talking vocals is just bizzare but completely awesome.

Unexpect and Braindrill. There's creative, and then there's just plain stupid. Neither band has anything of essence to offer other than "Look at how extreme we are, guys!"

oh man...where do I start?
Probably any number of totally retarded noise-grind bands with "Rape the diseased slut"-type lyrics. Torsofuck, Spermswamp, Cemetary Rapist, etc. Fucking bored twelve-year olds with musical instruments. But for ridiculous, over the top PROFESSIONAL bands, then I'd go with Dragon Force and yeah, probably Nitro. I mean, I dig the light-speed, precise and technical musicianship, and Batio is especially fun to watch (as well as listen to) but...it's all just a bit much, especially with the over-the-top cheezy high pitched vocals in Nitro and the whole Disney-cartoon-on-meth metal schtick with Dragon Force. And don't misunderstand: unlike noise/porno grind, I do NOT hate Dragon Force or Nitro, so easy there, folks. I'm just not a fan; as much as I admire the musicianship and execution. I just think they are ridiculous and over the top, as far as the music.

Last Days of Humanity. They're what I imagine people who only listen to pop would think metal sounds like. It's "just noise".

Deformed Elephant Surgery. Musically speaking they're pretty garbage death/grind with breakcore elements, but I've simply never heard anyone else do anything similar.

Summoning, because when you think their uber epic approach would go cheesy any moment, that's when you feel more awesome about their music.

Manowar. Everything about them is so cheesy and ridiculous, especially the lyrics. The way they dress during live performances is laughable and the fact that they wear those loincloths (or used to at least) also gives me a good chuckle.

^^^I would expect nothing less from a band called "Deformed Elephant Surgery." That name alone says it all.

^Yes, Manowar are cheezy, but hardly the worst offenders in that category. Plus, their music is good, solid honest heavy metal, and I give em props for that.

I'll be honest, I love Unexpect. I understand it's not for everyone, but it's really the kind of music you have to sit on for a little bit and really wrap your head around in order to be a fan of it. I remember thinking they were terrible and disjointed at first (being I mostly listen to old school death metal and traditional heavy metal), but over time it has grown on me.

Just because of how the music is performed, Van Canto scores for being both over the top and unlistenable to me. What a horrible idea.

^ Nothing is more laughable than their music.

My contribution is newer-Sigh the from the orchestrated ensemble on Scenes from hell to the chaotic and completely haphazard "music" on their newest album- the band really goes all out with their newer material. I can only imagine they'll have a full mariachi band on their next album, and with any luck that dubstep album that everyone keeps hoping for.

Wormed always seemed ridiculously over the top to me. But the songwriting is good enough that it totally works to their advantage and sets them apart from other brutal death metal bands (who often try to be ridiculous and over the top)

FAT32 Duo. I'd probably classify this as grindcore with keyboard and drums. This video does not do any justice, because when I saw them in concert the drums sounded a lot sloppier (although they also sound worse here as the video progresses), and the keyboard parts were a lot cheesier and more annoying. The audience loved them.

Green Jelly (the band that did the "three little pigs" song back in the early 90s)
Listening to their Cereal Killer Soundtrack album is like having a sugar high. It's nuts.

Man, Nitro used to be my favorite band for a little while in the 80's. Out fucking rageous.

Crotchduster is pretty ridiculous between the lyrics and roller coaster ride of style changes. I'd probably give them the crown and a respectable golf clap to Steel Panther, Maggot Twat, Green Beret, Anal Blast, and GWAR.

Zimmers Hole: toilet humor and I'd grow hair on my chest if it weren't made of steel, ahoy.

Also GWAR and Strapping Young Lad.

I'd have to say Bring Me The Horizon and Black Veil Brides just seem (or are rather) really ridiculous to me because what both bands do, especially their lead singers, is just macho posturing with little extras thrown in. While there are people who might enjoy that sort of thing, I'm definitely not of them.

Is there such a thing as "good" over-the-top? Or is it just a bad thing?

Urfaust takes the cake.

In my opinion, a band like I'm In A Coffin for example, uses their over-the-top ridiculousness to their advantage. I totally love IIAC.
Urfaust on the other hand has to be probably the worst excuse for a ... what? "depressive" band? What the hell are they supposed to be? Who could possibly get depressed listening to that retarded singer ruin the hard work the rest of the musicians put into their craft (then again, I really don't care, fuck em!)

I keep seeing people referring to them as geniuses, as if they are anything special. I'd rather listen to J-pop.

And I have to agree with whoever mentioned Unexpect... I'd like to say "thank you". :) I hate Unexpect (and believe me, I've tried being patient with them and taking in their music for its artistic value... no amount of time listening to this band is worth it, because in the end it will always be true that their first album was "okay" but hardly a gem.)

But... I will gladly share the planet/province with Unexpect if Urfaust would just die already.

Band's name: Paladins of the Golden Power Fights With the Great Sword of Eternal Magic and the Great Kings Will

Unfortunately their website (Where I was able to download this awesome music) is no longer active. I cant find a link anywhere to my favorite song of theirs "We Are the Paladins".
