So I'm doing black metal as my topic for my sociology class. How it became, evolved, why, etc. Can you guys give me some song examples of black metal with a good message (lyrical content), but brutal music (low-fi or heavy or whatever you want it to be!)? Also, do you guys have any good videos or sources to use to help me through my research? Thanks!

Don't know how optimistic their message is but this band is Christian and not Satanic so that's a start.

It depends on what you you mean by a good message. If you are asking for positive lyrics, Behemoth and Glorior Belli's last few albums are pretty positive, if you have Satanic leanings. If you mean a good message, as in socially conscious, you are going to have a harder time locating a band, as black metal by its nature is generally destructively leaning. However, I believe that Primordial, and possibly, Anaal Nathrakh, may fit the bill. Also, Wolves in the Throne Room are very environmentally conscious. If you simply mean a strong message, Watain, Dissection, and Mortuus (the band, not the man) seem like good starting points, to me.

As for research material, check out "Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult."

I'll be looking through Primordial and Wittr for sure (first ones to pop into my head too). I'm trying to show people that the music is just a vessel for the message and doesn't necessarily mean evil. Of course I'll mention all of the other shit like Varg, Euronymous, etc.

I'd steer clear of stuff like Wolves in the Throneroom and Behemoth dropped all their black metal in their sound years ago.

Cool man. Seriously though, do check out Glorior Belli for Satanic lyrics that are not evil. Generally. At least, not to me.

I'll make sure to look them up too! The project isn't due for another few weeks, but a head start is always nice, plus I can use it as a excuse to buy more music!

Good luck. I actually did a similar project back in college. It very fun. Hopefully, you have a good experience, as well.

Maybe Enslaved's later works, or you could look at the whole "viking metal" think too, regardless of what you think about the scene as to whether or not viking metal is a genre the bands who became affiliated with the term could be relevant like Windir and Primordial. I'm doing a speech tomorrow morning about Scandinavian metal in general so here's some info and my notes for the speech.

Spoiler: show
Considering the time limit is suppose to be 7 minutes and the first two drafts of my speech were nearing the 20 minute mark I had to really cut my speech down. ( fuck me for choosing Scandinavia as a whole for whatever reason) I ended up totally omitting almost everything but the basics about black metal, so nearly nothing about the controversy because it simply would not had made sense unless I had the full story, as well it would have been imbalanced to my other main points. Here's my note and draft paper though if you're interested, though it's pretty basic and hastily written. There were some parts that aren't completely accurate for the sake of keeping things within the time limit, as well as keeping things as simple as possible ( vague citations and references) but I think I've finally come up with a formula for tomorrow that will work, I just hope I can keep it around 7 minutes. My second draft is within the outline throughout the first few pages, the first draft was omitted entirely which contained even more information about black metal in particular, and the third draft is at the very end under my first set of sources. It's not exactly the one I'm using but it's close.

( I apologize for how cluttered and unorganized this is)

Perhaps this is more philosophy than sociology, but doesn't it conflict with the ideology of what you are studying to have to ask others for examples of it, videos to explain it to you, and bands with lyrical themes that you apparently can't find, even with the advanced search on this site?

Touche, it is only a really small part of my entire presentation, and I only asked for documents or videos to help me know what to look out for, I'm still doing all of my own research by watching the videos and gleaning what I need from them. I hope that makes sense. I'm mostly listening for the music recommendations and nothing else.

Depending on how you approach a positive message My Dreams of 8 by Satanic Warmaster could be a good example.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRkQQ_xLzoE

Here are the lyrics, definitely close to NS, but in his eyes they are positive in a way whether or not you agree with the ideology or not
Spoiler: show
The age of tragedies, my vision of a fallen empire
Like a lantern that burned out in ecstacy
Lighting the path of blood and honour into time
For eternity, forever reminding me... Forever changing time...

The man against time, in scorn against decline
One state, one folk, one leader, a true revelation
The purest essence of the cult of our blood
For infinity, flowing inside me... Forever binding me...

My dream of your empire
Fills me with joy
For it is also my fate
To end this life of strife in tragedy...

Live by the sword they say, thus I shall live
Let my words be my blade, let my songs be my spear

My dream of your empire
Fills me with joy
For it is also my fate
To end this life of strife in tragedy...
...or supremacy.

Don't need to be a sarcastic ass. I know you probably think saying Hail Satan is cool but it's a fad. He wanted a good message and I gave him one.

Thanks for the recommendation. I also thought of unblack metal instantly, but I don't know any bands that fall under that. I'll be checking out that band ASAP. Do you have any other examples?

This just in: Satan in metal - now just a fad!

To find more unblack metal bands, do an advanced search for bands with "black" in the genre field and "Christianity" in the lyrical themes field.

OP: if I know my ologies, I recall learning that sociology is meant to be a social science. Don't you think it would be helpful to sit down a minute and figure out what you're defining as a "good message"? Selecting bands with Christian themes as automatically having a "good message" seems a bit biased, don't you think? Rather than something as subjective as "good", what about looking for bands with positive messages? That would be quite a bit more objective since linguistic rules make it much more clear cut in determining when a band is supporting/advocating something rather than attacking it, and you don't have to deal with the decidedly non-scientific matter of defining your moral code before you present your sociological findings.

in terms of analyzing the evolution:

not perfect, but it offers some form of insight into the matter.

When it comes to band names and such, this might help a bit:

I like to see the history by album release, usually i use rym, of course info isn't 100% reliable, but gives you i general idea who start to release Black Metal or something that envolved to BM has we know today.

Primordial I'd second as a source for pretty "good" ideology/lyrics. See the sig :)

and yes, you need to define your terminology better. What the fuck does good mean?

Christian black metal is pure blasphemous evil. The Satanists are actually the "good" guys. Here's some nice positive lyrics by Behexen and perfect for the Easter holiday coming up!

Spoiler: show
And again is the easter night
celebration of victory and absence
year by year my heart delights
the death of semitic Christ

Gather the congregation of darkness
witches and worshippers of grand evil
in the cradle of gloominess
we rise the overflowing chalice

In this night we embrace
the ways of the flesh
and the wisdom of the serpent!

Celebration of Christ's Fall!

Rise! Rise up from the depths
the beings of the night
to celebrate with us
All evil spirits rise!
Rise from this magic ring
to honour the true God
God of all sorcerers, SATAN!!!

such positive
very goodness
much Satan
so wow

Funny, I'm actually also working on a black metal research project (archive science rather than sociology, though). Without hijacking this thread, I wonder if we could return to part of the OP's question: the evolution of the genre. I'm familiar with first wave, second wave, etc., but I'm really interested in how subgenres like atmospheric, ambient, and avant-garde came about, as well as the hybrid genres (black/doom, folk/black). Did bands come up with these classifications themselves, or did they evolve naturally out of musicians and fans discussing their music?
