So, today as I have been surfing the internet, searching a bit through some metal blogs, I found a new release from Wende, that was acompanyed by this cover:

Image

I didn't pay much atention to it since I never heared of the band, until I realized that I have seen it before. A quick search trough my library soon revealed that the exact same picture has been used by the band Klabautamann, as seen here:

Image

So, what do you guys think about the use of same cover pictures by different bands (within very related genres, since both beforementioned bands are influenced by black metal).

It's true that one is from Germany and the other one from the USA and they probably never heared of eachother but I think such things should't really be happening.

And do you guys know of any other cases like this one?

I remember Andrew Curtis-Brignell bringing up the similarity between the Caina album "Some People Fall" and Svarti Loghin's album "Drifting through the Void." As you can see it's a pretty simplistic idea for a cover so I chalk it up to coincidence. But I recall him making a bit of a minor fuss about it on Caina's facebook page since the two projects could both be lumped into the "post black metal genre." However, both are fantastic albums!

That's ridiculous, is it so hard to take a photograph, or draw something. Unless your music is greatly inspired by an artist it should be a priority to have an image that distinguishes your album from the myriad that's already out there.

Seriously an album cover can be memorable even if it technically isn't good.

i was just thinking about a thread like this the other day
M.C. Escher, Boris Vallejo, Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder stuff turns up everywhere, i often have that garden of earthly delights set as my wallpaper ha ha
the black death/war/goat metal guys seem to have really similar artwork quite often

I dont know if you talk about covers that are exaclty the same (same paint, same photo, same draw) or covers that look similar,i think the last one is the more interesting.

The painting on the cover of Bathory's Blood Fire Death album has been used a billion times, I think.

Wasn't this image supposed to originally be the cover of a Sepultura album? Either Beneath The Remains or Schizophrenia?

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but that Hexenhaus release is a real album and it came out before Blessed Are the Sick.

You're thinking of the cover of "Cause of Death" (by Obituary), which was originally supposed to be used for "Arise".

I've never heard of them. Since It had the same album cover and "A Tribute" in the title I just assumed that it was a Morbid Angel tribute.

I thought tthat sphere was the Pestilence signature thing from Testimony of the Ancients and Spheres. I can't believe a band used that artwork.

To be honest I think the Unmoored version looks better, also blame their label. The artwork was done by Dan Seagrave.

didn't Dimmu Borgir steal a lot of their artwork? The skull / chain thing is deffinately nicked from some old thrash band ( just cant remember name ). Their pentagram from puritanical euphoric misanthropia came from an Abyssos album 2 or 3 years prior

Not identical pictures, but the covers to The New Order and Individual Thought Patterns always struck me as following similar themes (globes, distorted images of giant heads looming over said globes); I have to think it's more than possible that ITP's cover was inspired by TNO's.

A swede called John Bauer. I used to read this book called Among Gnomes and Trolls (Eventyr om Nisser og Trolde in my native tongue) which he had illustrated. Many brilliant pictures to be found there.

Dreadmeat, that reminds me of the Pillars of Creation:

I've seen it used on a couple more, too. It's always funny to see how each band chooses to fill up the ugly blank space in the top-right corner.
