This is probably not the most original concept for a thread, but there are always a few bands that are mentioned that I never conceived posted on this on similar forums. What are some bands that were unique enough to be distinct from their respective subgenres, that were venturing near or onward to either creating a great album or working on creating a new sound entirely. Whether their big genre names or underground acts that never saw the light of day, what are the bands and albums that had glimmers of potential that never saw the light of day due to unfortunate circumstances.

THE band that ended too early? FUCKING DISEMBOWELMENT (There's Inverloch, but it's not exactly the same and how many albums could have been released to these days as Disembowelment?

Also, Luciferion. The Apostate's new tracks are just incredible.

Isengard/Storm. 1 full length it's not enough.

Burial, Kvist, Sleep.

Also IMO Death, Dozer and Isis although they all did release quite a few albums.

Artch could be a force to be reckoned with if they hadn't stopped after doing two albums - I know they reform occasionally, but they don't seem to get anything much done, particularly, when they do.

Im sure alot of metal heads on here would have liked to see Timeghoul stick round for a bit longer, they only managed to release two demos but still became an underground hit.

I will also add Lykathea Aflame, 1 release (before name change) and 19 reviews on this very site with an average score of 96%, enough said.

Agreed on Luciferion. Both their albums are incredible. Apparently Wojtech has a 3rd album written in MIDI form or something, so there's always a slim possibility of another album being released.

Scald. If Agyl had not died I would like to think they would have put out more epic doom albums, though perhaps the Tumulus material suggests otherwise.

Hanker and After Forever, both broke up right when they released some of their best, most well done work. Shame.

Thergothon

only 1 album? why????, i'd have liked to see em develop their style of funeral doom.

and how about Estatic Fear, after the masterpeice A Sombre Dance its a shame they havent made a follow up.

I would say Reverend Bizarre. Hands down my favorite Doom band ever. Their 3 albums and their EP's and splits aren't enough to satisfy me.

Brimstone (Swe). Their one album is this amazing mixture of Running Wild-esque riffing, with melodic death metal thrown in, and death / black metal vocals. At times it reminds me of Wintersun, but really, their one album is one of my favorite metal albums and one of the few that I always enjoy when I revisit it.

Insect Warfare. World Extermination is the best grindcore record ever, in my opinion. It would have been interesting to hear a full lenght album with the noisier direction they were taking on their last EP.

And another band that ended too early is definately Nirvana 2002. Their material was really strong and especially the last tracks they wrote were going in interesting direction. I'm sure had they released an album after that, today it would be in the same position as the swedish death metal classics like Left Hand Path etc.

Infester.

They only ever released one album, and it is the most evil sounding death metal album ever recorded, in my opinion. I would have loved to see them stay together as a band and release more material. Can only imagine what else they could have come out with

I think that bands like Disembowelment, Thergothon and so on are better of like this, going out in a blaze of glory after releasing a legendary album.

Vinterland - released only one album, Welcome to my last Chapter in 1996, which is a great album, but nothing since. I see on MA they are listed as active, but haven't heard anything about a new release

I think they are way, way overrated.

I'll say a lot of lesser known NWOBHM bands ended too early, too many to mention really.

Akercocke was making some of the most groundbreaking DM out there. It's a shame they have ended it, for now at least. Something tells me they will come back as strong as ever in the next few years, Hopefully!

Maruta springs to mind pretty quickly. They released a couple albums a in the last few years but split up in the last year or so, shortly after "Forward into Regression". Very solid modern death/grind with tons of sludgy groove moments. One of my favorites of the genre, shame they had to part ways.

Check out Lord Vicar, The Puritan, Orne and Spiritus Mortis Doom over the world! But yeah, they will be missed.

Great call! I got The Absence from one of the CM/NB grab bags and I love it. I don't even really like progressive metal but I thought it was an awesome album.

Along the lines of Morbid Saint, Aspid (Аспид) could have done great things. Not that Extravasation (Кровоизлияние) wasn't great... And Watchtower of course, but there is still a slight glimmer of hope for Mathematics to be released. Very slight.

Also Frightmare. Tempted to say Isis, but as they say, they did all they wanted to do so just gonna have to trust them on that.
