Quote:
The big mystery surrounding the new singer of Kamelot has been revealed. The band has just announced that Tommy Karevik is their new vocalist. The following press release was issued: "The American/German symphonic metal band Kamelot is proud to announce another key piece leading to the release of their new studio album. A question foremost in every Kamelot fan's mind has been: Who is the group's new lead singer? Band mastermind and guitarist Thomas Youngblood has now revealed: 'The new man is Scandinavian Tommy Karevik!'

"The general public may not be overly familiar with the 30 year old Swede, Karevik, but people in the industry know him as the immensely talented frontman of the Swedish band, Seventh Wonder. Youngblood states: 'We had around 800 candidates for the vacant position, among them a number of really renowned musicians, and having to reject them really wasn't easy. We want to thank all the applicants, thank you for your understanding and we wish you all lots of success in the future!'

In their search for a new singer, Thomas Youngblood found YouTube to be an amazing tool: "I listened to a clip of a studio production featuring Tommy and have to confess that his performance really amazed me. His approach to melodies and themes suits Kamelot perfectly, and during our European shows we had plenty of opportunity to find out what a great guy he is."

Karevik is thrilled about his new position: "I am so honored to now be a part of this family and I can't wait to move into the new era of the band together with the guys. I fully understand that this comes with great responsibility and that it will be a big challenge for me as a singer as well as a person, but you can rest assured I will give it my all. From this day, a new journey has begun and I am really eager to meet you all along the way to share my passion for this music!"

Not really familiar with Karevik, but this is no surprise. This is who I would have guessed they would choose.

Whoa...I'm pretty damned ecstatic right now. Tommy's performance on The Great Escape album is one of my all-time favourite prog performances: incredibly nuanced, warm and personal yet grandiose when it needs to be. He's going to be amazing in Kamelot.

A song from said album to give you an idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__B3OOaLH4k

I've still to listen to Seventh Wonder's latest two albums, but the guy is a great singer, and he can pull off Kamelot songs really well. Been hoping it was him since I saw vids of the European tour.

Coupled with Youngblood saying their next album sounds like Karma, I'm really looking forward to hearing their work with Karevik.

Seventh Wonder isn't very good from what little I've heard, but hopefully Kamelot can get some use out of the dude.

It's going to be hard adjusting; after all, Roy Khan's voice is what made Kamelot for me. Seventh Wonder didn't sound all that special, either.

Maybe they'll surprise me.

Listening to The Great Escape now...this really isn't good, man. Really generic and weak prog metal. Vocals are OK, maybe he'll be good with Kamelot, but eh, even he sounds pretty by the numbers. Hard to call this kind of thing prog when it doesn't progress or do anything new.

I don't think they're very good, either. Something about the vocal melodies really annoys me too. Way too bubbly, plastic, and fake. Good vocalist, but Kamelot will definitely lose their air of subtle melancholy.

Any band with the lyric "Let me be your alley cat" should not ever be praised so highly. Just saying.

All the people who are ragging on this band for "not progressing when it's prog" are missing the point of the music. Sure, it's not moving music forward, but why does it have to? They just incorporate elements from what are usually used as archetypal riffs and structures for prog metal bands, and they execute it with airy pomp and flair. No need to fix what ain't broken.

I, personally, am ecstatic about this, great vocalist and a great band, they really got the best guy.

Not my style of vocalist at all. He is a pretty good singer in his own right but way too soft for me. I want to hear some aggression in the voice, not this weak soft stuff.

I don't hear any pomp or flair. But aside from that it's prog metal, why call it that if you're not going to do ANYTHING new at all? This band is pretty much just straight up melodic heavy/power metal with bloated sections that attempt prog but really don't seem to do much for the music itself or for the outside music world - i.e. a failure on both fronts. Sometimes I might agree with you here, like with Circus Maximus or Pagan's Mind, who at least have some good songs. But these guys just don't cut it.

Mercy Falls is a good album, I haven't heard anything else by Seventh Wonder, though. Tommy is a solid vocalist and I can easily see his singing style fit right in with Kamelot.

Well, in all fairness, The Great Escape (song) is probably the weakest on the album, and is not exactly exemplary of a great prog epic.
The band, I think, is amazing. Great musicians all around. Keeping prog metal fresh with catchy melodies and vocals can be hard to do. Personally I think they pull it off great. Tommy is a fantastic vocalist and I can't wait to see how he sounds with Kamelot.

I listened to Seventh Wonder's "Wise Man" and I can definitely see how well he'll probably fit in with the rest of Kamelot, especially if they're going for a more power metal sound. Either way, I'm excited for what they'll come up with.

Didn't like that at all. He sounds so... generic.

The live video does him no justice. Try looking up King of Whitewater, by Seventh Wonder

I think it did, and the aforementioned song all but confirmed that his voice is nothing special. Khan at least had a unique voice; when you hear it, you know immediately who it belongs to. You can't do that with Karevik.

On a somewhat related note: Seventh Wonder's logo is a complete rip-off of Dream Theater's.

I don't see it. Unless you are looking at logos that aren't on The Archives, then you are wrong.

Someone who likes the band in question usually doesn't see the negative points. Cramming the initials of the band name in a logo is very Dream Theater-esque, if you consider their Majesty logo.

But anyways, I gave King of Whitewater another shot, and it still provided an underwhelming experience. I'm sure -- out of all the singers out there -- they could've picked someone with a bit more individuality, because this guy is faceless.

I guess I simply disagree with you guys. I think Tom's voice is far from faceless; I could pick out his voice from a sea of hundreds.

And here's a video of Kahn singing it. It just doesn't compare.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW7FlSwx ... re=related

Karevik's got a good, or even great, voice, but to me it lacks personality. If it was one thing Kahn had, it was personality. Seen Kamelot live once, and I've never seen someone owning the stage with such authority as Kahn.
On the other hand, I don't like the direction they have taken on later albums. Maybe a new singer will change the song writing and the sound?

I agree. He guy has a truly great voice, but in a "I've heard this on American Idol 50 times already" sort of way.

Khan sounds like Khan and nobody else does, which makes his awesome voice something pretty special.
