Me and my friend were talking about this the other day and were wondering if heavy metal cd's will have any worth in the future. I know that there are a lot of out of print material that is worth some sort of money. I am just wondering if in the future with everything going digital cd's will have any worth.

Of course they will. There will always be collectors who wish to have "hard" copies of albums. I am one of those people.
Scan through Ebay someday and have a look at what a Dawn CD, or first print Mutiilation CD is going for.

I think, judging by Ebay and Amazon and such, metal CD's (at least the good ones) tend to hold their value much better than a typical pop or rock CD. That doesn't mean that the CD you paid $15 for is going to be worth $50 some day, but it seems that at least you'll be able to get a good amount of that $15 back several years down the road if you decide to sell it (depending on, of course, if you find the right market for it. A garage sale or selling to a used CD store doesn't count).

Metal CDs (from non-major bands) have the "advantage" of not having large pressings, a potentially strong cult following, an already-significant collector's scene, and being a genre dependent a lot on word of mouth. That's why you see the 2007 reissue of Aspid's Extravasation already out of print and worth considerably more than it was initially. I don't think that any amount of digital availability will lessen the hip-factor of owning some first-pressing of an OSDM classic or whatever.

I'm really glad I snagged that Aspid CD. :D

I don't think physical formats are going to lose their value anytime soon.

I've always wondered why people are so concerned with the value of their CD/Vinyl collections. It makes it sound like it's a business decision to buy an album. Personally, I buy CDs because I want to build a collection composed by the music I love. That's it. I have no plans to ever sell them, so I couldn't care less if they'll be worth squat in the future. I'll still have them and be able to listen to them, so I'll be good.

Agreed. I don't even want to sell albums that suck. Even if I don't want to listen to them, they're still part of my collection.

You won't be around forever, you know.

Aren't you at least marginally interested in how much your chest is worth, if for no other reason than to know what you would bestow upon those who come after you? Could be a good chunk of change, and they might very well benefit from it.

I've often daydreamed of a dystopian future in which all forms of metal are outlawed (all CDs and what not are gathered and destroyed, all bands purged etc.) and we metalheads are in an underground community/form a little resistance group. We stash whatever forms of the metal music we can save in hidden safe locations and have little concerts in caverns underground.
I guess metal will be worth both nothing and everything in that world.
